Strong interim PM with clear strategy the need of the hour, says Johari
Posted by: superadmin - 07-08-2021, 05:11 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: It is imperative that a strong and untainted leader be appointed as interim prime minister to steer the nation out of the Covid-19 and economic morass now that Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin has lost the support of Umno, says Johari Ghani.

The former second finance minister said now that Umno had withdrawn support for Muhyiddin, an interim government with a new leader was needed until the next general election which, by law, has to take place within the next 16 months.

Saying this was not the time to play politics but to save lives and revive the economy, Johari, who is also the Umno Federal Territory chief, added that the interim government should draw upon and include talented people from all sectors, including opposition parties.

The Umno Supreme Council last night decided to officially withdraw its support for Muhyiddin as the prime minister. In calling on Muhyiddin to step down, its president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the Perikatan Nasional-led government had failed to resolve the present crisis and that the people were continuing to suffer.

Johari said that the interim prime minister should focus on restoring the image of the country that had been badly damaged since the emergence of Covid-19 and the failure of Muhyiddin’s leadership. These shortcomings, listed by the Umno Supreme Council last night, should be rectified as soon as possible by the interim government.

Rafidah slams ‘Game of Toilet Thrones’
Posted by: superadmin - 07-08-2021, 03:37 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: Former minister Rafidah Aziz has hit out at the latest developments in Malaysia, lamenting that politicians were back to playing politics like a “Game of Toilet Thrones”.

In a Facebook post, Rafidah said these politicians were busy giving promotions to themselves while splitting up their own party members, practising “corrupt, transactional politics”.

She also took a dig at opportunistic individuals who were offering to lead the country in the current situation, saying they were just chasing after power and position.

“Clearly, it’s only personal politics at play, political musical chair. It’s not about the heavy responsibility and the serious, meticulous work that comes with the position.

“There is clearly no leadership or leaders – merely individuals in cushy seats of power paid inflated remuneration from public funds.

Series of attacks target U.S. personnel in Iraq and Syria
Posted by: superadmin - 07-08-2021, 03:13 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

BAGHDAD/AMMAN, July 7 (Reuters) - U.S. diplomats and troops in Iraq and Syria were targeted in three rocket and drone attacks in the past 24 hours, U.S. and Iraq officials said on Wednesday, including at least 14 rockets hitting an Iraqi air base hosting U.S. forces, wounding two American service members.

While there were no immediate claims of responsibility for the attacks - part of a wave targeting U.S. troops or areas where they are based in Iraq and Syria - analysts believed they were part of a campaign by Iranian-backed militias.

Iraqi militia groups aligned with Iran vowed to retaliate after U.S. strikes on the Iraqi-Syrian border killed four of their members last month.

Two people were slightly wounded in the rocket attack on the Ain al-Asad air base in western Iraq, said coalition spokesman U.S. Army Colonel Wayne Marotto. The rockets landed on the base and its perimeter. He said earlier that three people were wounded.

PM Muhyiddin still commands majority support despite Umno’s exit, says Bersatu deputy president

KUALA LUMPUR, July 8 — Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) still commands majority support from the MPs despite Umno’s exit from Perikatan Nasional (PN), the party’s deputy president Datuk Seri Ahmad Faizal Azumu said today.

The Tambun MP was reported saying by The Star that the party has not been shaken by Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi announcement last night.

Ahmad Faizal pointed out that Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin was appointed as prime minister based on the support of the MPs, and not parties. Thus, Umno retracting its support did not carry much weight.

“Perikatan, namely Bersatu, is not shaken by the statement of the Umno president last night.

Anwar should be given right to form next govt, says Hanipa
Posted by: superadmin - 07-08-2021, 02:37 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: anwar-ibrahim-hanipa-maidin-collage-080721-1.jpg]

PETALING JAYA: Port Dickson MP Anwar Ibrahim should be given the preference to form the next government since his Pakatan Harapan (PH) coalition is the single largest bloc in the Dewan Rakyat with 88 members, a former deputy minister said.

Mohamed Hanipa Maidin said Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin’s Perikatan Nasional (PN) is now left with only 76 MPs after Umno officially withdrew its support for him.

Until the Umno supreme council decided to withdraw its support early this morning, the prime minister is believed to have had the support of some 114 MPs compared to the opposition’s 106.

Umno is the largest bloc in Muhyiddin’s government with 38 MPs although several individuals from the party, such as Machang MP Ahmad Jazlan Yaakub and Gua Musang MP Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah, had earlier withdrawn support.

Hanipa, the deputy law minister under the 22-month old PH administration, said that if all 38 MPs followed Umno’s directive, Muhyiddin was only left with 76 MPs.

Umno and Bersatu – rocky relations from the start
Posted by: superadmin - 07-08-2021, 01:46 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: ahmad-zahid-hamidi-muhyiddin-yassin-coll...0720-1.jpg]

PETALING JAYA: The tumultuous relationship between Bersatu and Umno has shaped much of the country’s political landscape since Bersatu’s inception in September 2016.

Bersatu, a splinter party from Umno, was set up with former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad as its chairman.

Mahathir left Umno in February 2016 following the 1MDB scandal involving then prime minister and Umno president Najib Razak.

Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin became the party president, and former Kedah menteri besar Mukhriz Mahathir the deputy president. Both had been sacked from Umno for supposedly colluding with the opposition.

Bersatu formally joined Pakatan Harapan (PH) in November 2016, siding with DAP, PKR and Amanah. Mahathir, being its chairman, was named PH’s prime ministerial candidate for the 14th general election (GE14).

Will Umno ministers and MPs break ranks, ask PH reps
Posted by: superadmin - 07-08-2021, 11:58 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: wog-chen-p-ramasamy-collage-080721-1.jpg]

PETALING JAYA: Two opposition politicians said today attention is on Umno MPs and ministers to see if they will quit their posts following the party’s official withdrawal of support for Muhyiddin Yassin as the prime minister.

PKR’s Wong Chen said there is a cloud of confusion and crisis within Umno, and the question is what will happen to those who break ranks with the party president.

“All eyes are now on the Umno ministers in the Cabinet. Will those in the minister cluster pull out of Perikatan Nasional or break ranks with Umno?” the Subang MP asked in a Facebook post.

“If they break ranks, will they be sacked? If they are sacked, will they join Bersatu? If they join Bersatu, will they still be ministers?

“Umno is now at a crossroads. What happens next will decide the fate of the nation.”

No one is bigger than Umno, says Tok Mat after party states stand
Posted by: superadmin - 07-08-2021, 11:21 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: Following Umno’s decision to retract support for Muhyiddin Yassin as the prime minister, its deputy president, Mohamad Hasan, says no individual is bigger and more important than the party.

“Umno’s stand must be based on the aspirations of the people and solely for the people,” he said in a Facebook post today.

Mohamad stressed that a clear stand is important for a political party, adding that “without a stand, Umno is just a registered party”.

He assured party members that Umno’s stand would not deviate from the priorities of the people, country and party.

“It is definitely in line with the decision of the general assembly,” Umno’s No. 2, better known as Tok Mat, said.

China is cracking down on stocks that trade on U.S. exchanges
Posted by: superadmin - 07-08-2021, 11:15 AM - Forum: Business, Economy and Investment - No Replies

China is cracking down on stocks that trade on U.S. exchanges. Here’s what it means if you hold them
  • Beijing is stepping up its oversight on the flood of Chinese listings in the U.S., which are overwhelmingly tech companies.
  • The State Council said the rules of “the overseas listing system for domestic enterprises” will be updated, while it will also tighten restrictions on cross-border data flows and security.
  • Market analysts say regulatory pressure could not only threaten the IPOs in the pipeline but could also upend the popular Chinese ADR market.
[Image: 106829905-1611663990370-gettyimages-1230...=740&h=416]

China’s most powerful companies — including Didi, Alibaba and Tencent — are suddenly under immense scrutiny as country vows to crack down on domestic companies that list on U.S. exchanges. That move could upend a $2 trillion market loved by some of the biggest American investors.
Beijing is stepping up its oversight on the flood of Chinese listings in the U.S., which are overwhelmingly tech companies. The State Council said in a statement Tuesday that the rules of “the overseas listing system for domestic enterprises” will be updated, while it will also tighten restrictions on cross-border data flows and security.

The crackdown on tech is not a new trend. But because the nation has the ability to move quickly, any action could wreak havoc in major areas on Wall Street. Market analysts say it could not only threaten the IPOs in the pipeline, but it could also pressure the popular Chinese ADR market.

A giant 3D cat has taken over one of Tokyo's biggest billboards
Posted by: superadmin - 07-08-2021, 10:54 AM - Forum: Business, Economy and Investment - No Replies

[Image: http%3A%2F%2Fcdn.cnn.com%2Fcnnnext%2Fdam...-tokyo.jpg]

A gigantic 3D cat has appeared on a billboard in Tokyo, where it looms playfully over one of the city's busiest railway stations.

Shown between advertisements, the hyper-realistic feline comes to life on a 1,664-square-foot curved LED screen in the Shinjuku district. The 4K-resolution display shows the cat walking around high above the Japanese capital as it audibly meows.

Airing between 7 a.m. and 1 a.m., the video changes throughout the day. The calico cat is first startled awake in the morning, and by the afternoon it can be seen standing up and meowing at passersby. In the evening, it lies down and falls asleep with its head rested on its paws.

Although the display doesn't officially launch until July 12, test broadcasts have been taking place since last month. And the "Shinjuku cat" has already attracted attention online, with users calling it "cute" and expressing their amazement at the technology.

Giant 3D wave sweeps over Seoul's Gangnam District

One Twitter user posted a video of the animal yawning and falling asleep, writing that it "looks sleepy at night."
