China could save $1.6 trillion by replacing coal with clean energy, report finds
Posted by: superadmin - 04-23-2021, 03:23 PM - Forum: Environment Protection News - No Replies

  • There’s a “huge economic incentive” for China to move away from coal, according to a report by financial analytics company TransitionZero.
  • China last year said it aims to achieve carbon neutrality by 2060, but is currently heavily reliant on coal.
  • “There’s a great deal of work that China will still need to do,” said Matthew Gray, co-CEO of TransitionZero.

China could stand to benefit economically if it can successfully replace coal with renewable energy, according to a report by financial analytics company TransitionZero.

The study looked at the costs, or savings, that the Chinese government would incur if it replaced its existing coal-fired power plants with zero-carbon alternatives.

“What we found is China could save $1.6 trillion by doing that,” said Matthew Gray, co-CEO of TransitionZero, a London-based firm.

Foxconn's giant factory in Wisconsin sounded too good to be true. Turns out it was
Posted by: superadmin - 04-23-2021, 03:11 PM - Forum: Business, Economy and Investment - No Replies

New York (CNN Business)When first announced in 2017, Foxconn's plan to build a massive electronics factory in Wisconsin was hailed by then-President Donald Trump as a sign of the rebirth of American manufacturing.

But nearly four years later, the complex that promised to create a Silicon Valley in the industrial Midwest is essentially a white elephant, a collection of mostly empty buildings without any high-tech products to build.

And this week it became official: The pledged investment of up to $10 billion to create as many as 13,000 jobs is not coming.

The Wisconsin Economic Development Corp. and the Taiwanese electronics maker signed a revised incentive deal outlining a $672 million investment from Foxconn that will create fewer than 1,500 jobs. The incentives package now totals only $80 million, less than 3% of the nearly $3 billion in tax breaks and other perks the state originally promised.

"When I ran to be governor, I made a promise to work with Foxconn to cut a better deal for our state," Gov. Tony Evers said on Tuesday. "The last deal didn't work for Wisconsin, and that doesn't work for me."

Evers, a Democrat, made opposition to the lucrative package one of the main issues of the 2018 campaign in which he defeated incumbent Gov. Scott Walker, a Republican and ally of President Trump.

PAS has to reform to stay relevant
Posted by: superadmin - 04-23-2021, 11:57 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

From Moaz Nair

Quote:This is the 21st century but if PAS is still bogged down with conservatism and fantasies of the Middle Ages in seeking partnership only with non-liberal or conservative political parties in their approach to politics and nation-building, the country can never progress under their rule.

PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang, as reported recently, gestured that PAS would not work with political parties that are “liberal”. Does this mean that PAS is only willing to work with political parties that are illiberal or conservative?

If this is the case, then PAS cannot work with other political parties, as there is none in the country that is as conservative. PAS should then stand alone with its conservative approach to politics and governance, and seek out support from the voters.

All political parties in Malaysia, except PAS, are liberal in principles and approach. Even when race becomes central to some of these parties, in reality they acknowledge diversity and are still willing to accommodate people of other races, religions and those with diverse lines of thinking.

Liberal thoughts are not confined to political and social issues. They have philosophical and scientific dimensions which have brought about many scientific inventions and discoveries that have made life more expedient for mankind.

A liberal democracy is a representative democracy with protection for individual liberty and property by rule of law. It supports free markets, a limited government, individual rights, democracy, secularism, gender and racial equality.

It values the rule of law, freedom and social justice where all individuals are treated equally and enjoy basic rights to education as well as religious tolerance. In a liberal democracy, it is obligatory for domestic and international bodies to protect these values.

On the contrary, a religiously conservative government or an illiberal democracy has no limits on the power of the elected representatives to rule as they please. Although elections take place, citizens are usually deprived of knowing about the real goings-on of those who exercise power because of the lack of civil liberties. Thus, it does not create an open society and is regressive in nature.

No vaccine or cure for climate change, says Dr Jemilah
Posted by: superadmin - 04-23-2021, 10:59 AM - Forum: Environment Protection News - No Replies

PUTRAJAYA: Every pandemic that threatens the lives of humans has a vaccine to prevent the loss of life, but not so for climate change, the Prime Minister’s special adviser on public health Dr Jemilah Mahmood said.

Using the Covid-19 pandemic as an example, Jemilah said the vaccine for the pandemic was successfully created by Messenger RNA technology which is safe for humans.

“Now we are faced with Covid-19, which can be fatal, but the vaccine has been found. There is no vaccine, however, for climate change, even if it has similar effects.

“Climate change is caused by uncontrolled development till it destroys the environment. This is a bad sign as environmental destruction causes wildlife to lose their habitat, which will affect humans,” she said at a webinar entitled “Malaysia’s Role to Combat Climate Change”, today.

Family’s bid for answers hits a wall as grandpa lies in coma after fall
Posted by: superadmin - 04-23-2021, 10:53 AM - Forum: Local News - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: A family seeking to find out who is responsible for maintaining an apartment building has hit a stumbling block despite a grandfather lying in a coma for nearly six weeks following a fall down the stairs.

John Joseph Samikanoo, 67, has been unconscious since his fall at the PKNS apartment building in SS8, Kelana Jaya, on March 13 after he was forced to walk up to his 10th floor unit as all three lifts were out of order.

Found next to him was a rusty stair railing, which police suspect might have given way when John used it to support himself during the incident at his apartment block, one of two built there by PKNS in 1984.

His family, who complained that the lifts and staircase had been poorly maintained, claimed that the building’s management corporation (MC) had been unwilling to accept any responsibility.

Guan Eng claims Perikatan tapping National Trust Fund to avoid Parliament scrutiny
Posted by: superadmin - 04-23-2021, 10:36 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

KUALA LUMPUR, April 23 — DAP’s Lim Guan Eng has labelled the Perikatan Nasional administration’s plan to tap funds from the National Trust Fund (Kumpulan Amanah Wang Negara) irresponsible, incompetent, and a bid to escape Parliament scrutiny.

The former finance minister suggested the plan was akin to robbing the savings meant for future generations, forced by Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin’s poor budget planning.

“The PN government once again demonstrates its incompetence and irresponsibility in managing public finances,” Lim, MP for Bagan, said in a statement.

“This time they are using emergency powers to raid the National Trust Fund (Kumpulan Wang Amanah Negara or KWAN) to make up for the poor 2021 Budget planning,” he added.

KUALA LUMPUR, April 23 — More Malaysians are unsure today as to who they wish to vote for if a general election is called soon, according to a survey by research outfit Invoke Malaysia.

A little over half or 51 per cent of Malaysians polled in February 2021 said they were unsure as to who to vote for in the next general election, 16 per cent said they’d vote for Perikatan Nasional (PN), eight per cent for Barisan Nasional (BN), four per cent for Muafakat Nasional (MN) and just three per cent of voters said they’d vote for Pakatan Harapan (PH).
Seventeen per cent refused to provide an answer.

'Totally disgusting' - Rafidah wants action on period spot checks
Posted by: superadmin - 04-22-2021, 06:49 PM - Forum: Local News - No Replies

[Image: 0e6b4a2a927b3a5937e9446186401162.jpg=s660]

Former ministers Rafidah Aziz and Azalina Othman Said have expressed shock and anger at reports stating period spot checks are a common practice, particularly in boarding schools.

"That is totally disgusting and a violation of a person's privacy. No religion gives such permission.

"The Education Ministry must act to put a stop to this nonsense and lay out clear ground rules on how schools including boarding schools treat students," Rafidah told Malaysiakini.

She said there was absolutely no excuse for anyone to invade another person's privacy in such a manner, no matter what the reason.
