No need to talk about compensation, Penang isn’t paying, says DCM |

PETALING JAYA: Speculation over how Kedah might spend money paid by Penang in compensation for water drawn from Sungai Muda is pointless as the state will not be paying anything, says deputy chief minister P Ramasamy.
He said a panel discussion held by Forum Air Malaysia yesterday “adds little or no value” to the water issues.
Last month, Kedah menteri besar Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor announced the state’s plan to build 14 water tanks along the river to conserve water for padi irrigation and as drought reserves, adding that he wanted Penang to pay for water drawn from Sungai Muda to avoid “drinking muddy water” as a result of the water tank project.
Penang relies on Sungai Muda for 80% of its water needs and it processes the raw water in Butterworth.

PETALING JAYA: Umno may withdraw support for the Perikatan Nasional-led government sooner rather than later – and it could all depend on discussions at the party’s next supreme council meeting on Sunday.
A source in the know said the pullout was on the agenda at the meeting of the Umno top leadership.
However, the main issue to be addressed is the party’s elections which are due to be held this year.
There have been calls from party leaders, most notably former Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin, for the polls to be held before the next general election.

Analyst sees Gerakan heading for another election disaster |

PETALING JAYA: An analyst foresees Gerakan repeating its dismal performance in 2018 at the next general election, potentially losing all parliamentary and state seats that it aims to contest.
Universiti Malaya’s Awang Azman Pawi said it would be difficult for Gerakan to win seats as Chinese voters who used to be its main base of support, now sided with Pakatan Harapan.
Another reason for the reluctance of Chinese voters to back Gerakan was that it is now a part of Muhyiddin Yassin’s Perikatan Nasional coalition.
“At GE14, Gerakan did not win any of the state assembly and parliamentary seats it contested, and I expect this to be repeated if Gerakan can’t woo Chinese voters,” he said.

Frog cluster more disgusting, Umno man hits back |

PETALING JAYA: An Umno MP has hit back at Bersatu and those who labelled “court clusters” as opportunists by stating that “frog clusters” were the actual political animals.
“Those who jump ship are more disgusting than court clusters” as it is a move to escape court charges, Machang MP Ahmad Jazlan Yaakub said in response to a Bersatu Supreme Council member Muhammad Faiz Na’aman.
Ahmad Jazlan said: “Your party (Bersatu) is full of political animals. You should remember that those who you are calling as court clusters are the ones that supported your president (Muhyiddin Yassin) to be the prime minister.”
Earlier today, Faiz had said the those in the “court cluster” were protecting their own interests under the guise of struggling for Malay supremacy. He accused them of using the tactic of a cartel monopolising government tenders, which was recently busted by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission.
Ahmad Jazlan who resigned as chairman of the Malaysian Palm Oil Board in January, said those known as “court clusters”, referring to Umno leaders facing court charges, were the ones who had supported the ruling Perikatan Nasional coalition’s 2021 budget.
“The support has allowed your president to continue leading the country till today,” he reminded Faiz.

PETALING JAYA: Besides Covid-19, the nation’s main threats at this time include certain politicians who are part of a “court cluster”, said a Bersatu leader today.
Bersatu Supreme Council member Muhammad Faiz Na’aman said the “court cluster” was hiding under the guise of struggling for Malay supremacy to protect their own interests.
He added that this was similar to the modus operandi of the cartel that was monopolising government tenders, which was recently busted by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission.
“They betrayed our people and are willing to sacrifice the interests of the nation, Bumiputeras and Muslims to the point that the New Economic Policy failed to achieve its goals,” he said in a statement today.

We are not against Amanah joining PN, says PAS |

PETALING JAYA: PAS is not against its splinter party Amanah joining Perikatan Nasional (PN), saying such a move would contribute to the unity of the ummah.
PAS information chief Kamaruzaman Mohamad said that although the ideologies of the two parties made cooperation difficult, it was not impossible.
“I agree with my president (Abdul Hadi Awang) that PN is a platform to unite everyone. If Amanah wants to be together (with parties in PN), this can be discussed at the PN Supreme Council,” he told FMT.
Kamaruzaman was responding to a question about PAS’ readiness to work with Amanah, just as it wants Umno to work with Bersatu. Bersatu is a splinter party of Umno.
This came after Umno secretary-general Ahmad Maslan, in explaining the political rift, likened the tension between Umno and Bersatu to the rivalry between PAS and Amanah.
The bad blood between Umno and Bersatu stems from Bersatu’s attacks against Umno in the run-up to the 14th general election and its subsequent acceptance of Umno defectors after the polls.

SHANGHAI: China stocks started the week on a firm note on Monday led by robust gains for new energy vehicle firms, while strong foreign inflows also helped sentiment.
The CSI300 index rose 2.1% to 5,069.66 points at the end of the morning session, while the Shanghai Composite Index gained 1.3% to 3,471.17 points.
Leading the gains on Monday, the CSI new energy vehicles index jumped 5.7% after Huawei’s launch of automated-driving solutions on Sunday.
Also helping support the market, foreign investors purchased a net 14.2 billion yuan (US$2.18 billion) worth of A-shares via the Stock Connect linking mainland and Hong Kong, according to Refinitiv data.
“Driven by declining interest rates for the short-term and upbeat corporate earnings, the A-share market is expected to continue rebound,” Southwestern Securities noted in a report.

PETALING JAYA: Malaysia will be working with Microsoft to establish an inclusive digital economy through the Bersama Malaysia initiative in the next five years.
Speaking at the launch of Bersama Malaysia today, Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin said the initiative will cost at least US$1 billion, or RM4 billion.
It is said to be Microsoft’s “most significant investment” in Malaysia in the past three decades, which will see the company establishing its first data centre region in the country, among others.
Muhyiddin said this will comprise “multiple data centres to manage data from various countries”, all running on renewable energy by 2025.
It will also generate US$6.90 (RM28.3) for every US$1 (RM4.20) of Microsoft Malaysia’s cloud revenue and create about 19,000 job opportunities, including 4,000 IT-related jobs.
The Bersama Malaysia initiative also includes Microsoft partnering up with the Malaysian Administrative Modernisation and Management Planning Unit (MAMPU), the Human Resources Development Fund (HRDF), Petronas, Celcom and Grab.
“I was made to understand by Microsoft that these partnerships will help skill, in various degrees, up to one million Malaysians by the end of 2023.

Bitcoin suffers flash crash following week of crypto hype |

New York (CNN)After a hype-filled week for cryptocurrencies, Bitcoin experienced a flash crash over the weekend, plunging nearly 14% in less than an hour, from about $59,000 to $51,000, on Saturday night before rebounding. Other popular cryptocurrencies including ethereum and Dogecoin also fell dramatically, before recouping some of their losses.
Bitcoin has skyrocketed in value this year as it gained more mainstream acceptance, but the sharp price fall this weekend seems to have been triggered by an unconfirmed Twitter rumor that the US Treasury was planning to crack down on money laundering schemes involving cryptocurrencies. The agency did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Sunday.
Bitcoin's rapid overnight plunge is the latest indicator that the crypto market remains wildly volatile.
Last week crypto enthusiasm seemed to reach a peak as trading platform Coinbase went public at a valuation of $86 billion, followed by a wild 500% rally in Dogecoin — an asset that was created as a joke in 2013. Cryptocurrency backers have spent years insisting that bitcoin, ethereum and other digital coins could revolutionize the world of finance, and with the success of Coinbase's Wall Street debut Wednesday, those backers are finally having their moment.
Tesla has started accepting bitcoin payments for its cars and now holds some of the digital currency on its balance sheet. Payment processors including PayPal (PYPL), Mastercard (MA) and Visa (V) are trying to streamline crypto payments on their networks. Meanwhile, Goldman Sachs will reportedly soon offer its private wealth management clients avenues to invest in bitcoin and other digital currencies and Morgan Stanley announced that it will offer its wealthy clients access to bitcoin funds.
CNN's Julia Horowitz contributed to this report.
