The Welshman who mailed himself home from Australia in a box

(CNN) — He'd only just arrived in Australia from Wales, but teenager Brian Robson quickly realized that he'd made a big mistake by emigrating to the other side of the world.

Unfortunately the homesick 19-year-old didn't have the money to cover the cost of abandoning the assisted passage immigration scheme he'd traveled with in 1964, as well as his return flight home.

After realizing his options were pretty limited, Robson, from Cardiff, hatched a plan to smuggle himself onto a plane in a small box and travel back in the cargo hold.

Now, over 50 years after the extremely risky journey that saw his picture splashed across newspapers around the world, Robson is hoping to track down his old friends John and Paul -- two Irishman who nailed down the crate and sent him on his way.

"The last I spoke to John and Paul was when one of them tapped the side of the box and said 'You OK,'" he tells CNN Travel. "I said 'yes' and they said 'Good luck.' I'd love to see them again."

Egypt impounds Ever Given ship over $900 million Suez Canal compensation bill
Posted by: superadmin - 04-14-2021, 10:32 AM - Forum: Business, Economy and Investment - No Replies

[Image: 605cf4d36746fb0018a73cb7?width=1000&form...&auto=webp]

(CNN Business)Egyptian authorities have seized a massive cargo ship which blocked the Suez Canal for almost a week last month, amid a dispute over financial damages, the state-run Al Ahram news outlet said on Tuesday.

An Egyptian court ordered the vessel's Japanese owner, Shoei Kisen Kaisha, to pay $900 million in compensation as a result of losses inflicted when the Panamanian-flagged Ever Given prevented marine traffic from transiting through the vital global trade waterway.

The hefty bill also includes maintenance fees and the costs of the rescue operation, Al Ahram reported.

PN accused of failure to tackle graft
Posted by: superadmin - 04-14-2021, 10:19 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: Economist and former civil servant Ramon Navaratnam has questioned Perikatan Nasional’s commitment to fighting corruption in the civil service, saying it has shown no political will to do so after being in power for more than a year.

Commenting on the recent crackdowns on syndicates in the civil service, he said it was time for structural changes in the public sector, but this required radical reforms.

He said the rising national deficit and debts and political instability were taking Malaysia to a tipping point and the country would be in serious trouble if nothing was done immediately.

Navaratnam was once deputy secretary-general of the treasury and he has also been head of Transparency International-Malaysia.

Analysts see crack in DAP widening
Posted by: superadmin - 04-14-2021, 10:09 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: Political analysts see the recent spat between DAP leaders as a sign that a crack in the party is widening, particularly over the question of cooperation with Malay-based parties.

They say the party’s English-educated leaders don’t see eye to eye with their Chinese-educated colleagues.

Kenneth Cheng of Agora Society, a loose network of intellectuals, told FMT the division had in fact become apparent soon after Pakatan Harapan fell from power. He said one of the disagreements was over how to get back into power.

A news report yesterday quoted DAP central committee member Ronnie Liu as saying the party should not degrade itself just to gain Malay support and did not have to “dilute its Chineseness” just because of criticism from political enemies.

Two prominent DAP members – MPs Hannah Yeoh and Tony Pua – denounced Liu for his remarks.

PAS a threat to Penang’s economy and future
Posted by: superadmin - 04-13-2021, 09:35 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

From Joshua Woo Sze Zeng

PAS and the Penang Sustainable Natural Heritage Association (Lekas) have again raised empty objections against the Penang South Reclamation (PSR) project.

This is to be expected as Lekas chairman Zikrullah Ismail is one of PAS’ youth leaders in Penang.

It is clear that PAS is going all out to stop sustainable development in Penang, wanting the state to suffer economically.

When Kedah’s menteri besar from PAS threatened to cut off water from flowing into Penang, these PAS leaders in Penang kept quiet.
When Kedah’s menteri besar from PAS unveiled the RM40 billion sea reclamation megaproject in Langkawi, these same PAS leaders in Penang went silent.

But when the Penang state government wanted to proceed with the PSR as part of the state’s efforts to pursue sustainable development, these PAS leaders suddenly became eco-warriors and went all out to criticise the project.

122 goals in 36 matches: The making of Bayern Munich's wonderkid Jamal Musiala
Posted by: superadmin - 04-13-2021, 11:37 AM - Forum: Football - No Replies

[Image: 210409101040-jamal-musiala-tease-exlarge-169.jpg]

(CNN)"Unbelievable" is the word that one of Jamal Musiala's former coaches continually uses to describe the 18-year-old, who is fast developing into one of Europe's most exciting talents.

The attacking midfielder is currently thriving in his breakthrough season, scoring five goals in 29 appearances for Bayern Munich and making his senior debut for the German national team in March.

At just 17, he became Bayern's youngest ever Champions League goalscorer earlier this season and looks very much at home playing alongside world-class talent such as Robert Lewandowski and Thomas Muller.

On Saturday, he scored with a wonderful effort in his side's 1-1 draw with Union Berlin to remind the world of his efficiency in front of goal.

But despite tearing up the record books since joining Bayern in 2019, it was in the UK that Musiala's football education was accelerated.

Respect state assembly no-go on forests, NGO reminds exco
Posted by: superadmin - 04-13-2021, 11:13 AM - Forum: Environment Protection News - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: An environmental group has urged the Selangor government to respect the state assembly’s decision to not delist the Kuala Langat North forest reserve, after a state official said degazetting the forest was still on the cards.

Selangor executive councillor Hee Loy Sian had said yesterday that the delisting of the forest is still on the cards. The forest is occupied by rich wildlife species and is the home of Orang Asli.

Hee said an investigation and discussions with academics and experts were being carried out about degazettement of the forest.

Sahabat Alam Malaysia president Meenakshi Raman said “degazettement or not” should have been moot, as the Selangor legislature had passed a motion not to touch any forest reserves.

‘Protectionist’ cabotage policy bad for nation’s image, says economist
Posted by: superadmin - 04-13-2021, 11:10 AM - Forum: Business. Economy and Investment - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: An economist says the removal of a cabotage exemption for foreign vessels undertaking submarine cable repairs makes Malaysia appear “unfriendly” among foreign investors.

Geoffrey Williams of the Malaysian University of Science and Technology said the policy would give Malaysia a bad image for running a protectionist policy favouring local firms.

“This would affect the overall investment perception for Malaysia,” Williams said.

The cabotage exemption had previously allowed foreign vessels to perform undersea repair jobs. However, in November, transport minister Wee Ka Siong revoked the exemption for submarine cable repairs.
