Afghanistan: 'We have won the war, America has lost', say Taliban
Posted by: superadmin - 04-15-2021, 04:14 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

Driving to Taliban-controlled territory doesn't take long. Around 30 minutes from the northern city of Mazar-e-Sharif, passing large craters left by roadside bombs, we meet our host: Haji Hekmat, the Taliban's shadow mayor in Balkh district.

Perfumed and in a black turban, he's a veteran member of the group, having first joined the militants in the 1990s when they ruled over the majority of the country.

The Taliban have arranged a display of force for us. Lined up on either side of the street are heavily armed men, one carrying a rocket propelled grenade launcher, another an M4 assault rifle captured from US forces. Balkh was once one of the more stable parts of the country; now it's become one of the most violent.

Baryalai, a local military commander with a ferocious reputation, points down the road, "the government forces are just there by the main market, but they can't leave their bases. This territory belongs to the mujahideen".

It's a similar picture across much of Afghanistan: the government controls the cities and bigger towns, but the Taliban are encircling them, with a presence in large parts of the countryside.

Will Celcom-Digi merger be good for consumers, asks Tok Mat
Posted by: superadmin - 04-15-2021, 04:12 PM - Forum: Business. Economy and Investment - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: The Celcom-Digi merger needs to be studied in detail by the government to ensure there will be benefits to consumers, and not just the giant entities, said Umno deputy president Mohamad Hasan.

In a Facebook post today, Mohamad, also known as Tok Mat, called for an extensive government assessment on the merger’s impact on national importance, the dynamics of the telecommunications industry, and its compliance to competition laws.

Recently it was announced that the Celcom Axiata Bhd and Digi.Com Bhd merger would be finalised in the next few months.

The merger is set to become the largest telecommunication service provider in the country if negotiations are successful.

Why are so many babies dying of Covid-19 in Brazil?
Posted by: superadmin - 04-15-2021, 03:49 PM - Forum: Covid-19 Pandemic - No Replies

More than a year into the pandemic, deaths in Brazil are now at their peak. But despite the overwhelming evidence that Covid-19 rarely kills young children, in Brazil 1,300 babies have died from the virus. One doctor refused to test Jessika Ricarte's one-year-old son for Covid, saying his symptoms did not fit the profile of the virus. Two months later he died of complications from the disease.

[Image: _118054022_472c7648-af0b-484a-8ae6-735843ca6fac.jpg]

After two years of trying, and failed fertility treatments, teacher Jessika Ricarte had all but given up on having a family. Then she fell pregnant with Lucas.

"His name comes from luminous. And he was a light in our life. He showed that happiness was much more than we imagined," she says.

She first suspected something was wrong when Lucas, always a good eater, lost his appetite.

At first Jessika wondered if he was teething. Lucas's godmother, a nurse, suggested that he might just have a sore throat. But after he developed a fever, then fatigue and slightly laboured breathing, Jessika took him to hospital, and asked for him to be tested for Covid.
"The doctor put on the oximeter. Lucas's levels were 86%. Now I know that is not normal," says Jessika.

But he was not feverish, so the doctor said: "My dear, don't worry. There's no need for a Covid test. It's probably just a minor sore throat."

He told Jessika that Covid-19 was rare in children, gave her some antibiotics and sent her home. Despite her misgivings, there was no option to have Lucas tested privately at the time.

Jessika says that some of his symptoms dissipated at the end of his 10-day antibiotics course, but the tiredness remained - as did her concerns about coronavirus.

MP SPEAKS | I will contest DAP polls, prepared for defeat
Posted by: superadmin - 04-15-2021, 10:42 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

MP SPEAKS | I will contest the DAP central executive committee election in June and am prepared to be defeated in a party election, where I have given over 55 years of my life in pursuit of the Malaysian dream. I am not aiming for any frontline leadership position.

I want to reiterate that DAP does not advocate any de-Chinese, de-Malay, de-Indian, de-Kadazan or de-Iban policy. We stand for the very opposite, as we want Malaysians to accept that Malaysians will have multiple identities – ethnic, religious, linguistic, cultural, regional - but first and foremost that they are all Malaysians.

I want to thank KY Chan and Tony Pua, the DAP MP for Damansara, for this idea of Theatre Impian which they had worked for over two years as a labour of love, solidarity, idealism and patriotism but they had kept me in the dark until last month, just before the launching of Theatre Impian.

Theatre Impian captured the substance of what we had fought for over half a century, in pursuit of the Malaysian dream for all Malaysians regardless of race, language, religion or region to be united to make Malaysia a world-class great nation.

Zaid schools Hadi on ‘real groups without integrity’
Posted by: superadmin - 04-14-2021, 02:42 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: In a jibe against PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang, former federal minister Zaid Ibrahim has listed examples of politicians without integrity, including those who preach Islamic governance without being willing to make meaningful changes.

Zaid was responding to Hadi’s Facebook post, which stated that Umno and Pakatan Harapan had no integrity regardless of whether or not they won the majority of the seats in Parliament in the upcoming general election.

Zaid, in return, said in a Facebook post: “The best example of politicians with no integrity include those who use Covid-19 as an excuse to remain in power through the proclamation of emergency.

“Other examples include those using government power to ‘persuade’ MPs to jump parties, using government funds without prior approval in Parliament, and those speaking on reforms and Islamic governance, but are not willing to make ‘structural’ or thorough changes in the country’s system, in line with the requirements of a democratic country.”

Are Tech billionaires focusing on the right areas?
Posted by: superadmin - 04-14-2021, 01:46 PM - Forum: Environment Protection News - No Replies

Tech billionaires are obsessed with climate change — but some question if they’re focusing on the right areas
  • Broadly speaking, the world’s three richest tech billionaires are all trying to develop new technologies that can reduce the world’s carbon dioxide emissions.
  • It’s widely known that trees are among the most efficient carbon-capture machines on earth.
  • Trees and reforestation, however, are relatively low down on the tech billionaire agenda list.

Climate change appears to be high on the agenda for tech billionaires like Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos and Bill Gates but some are questioning whether they’re focusing their efforts on the right areas.

Broadly speaking, the three richest tech billionaires — who rank in the top five richest people on the planet — are all trying to develop new technologies that can reduce the world’s carbon dioxide emissions.

Musk is largely focused on funding carbon capture technologies, Gates is particularly bullish on nuclear energy, and Bezos has created a dedicated “Bezos Earth fund.” All of them believe that technology has a major role to play in tackling climate change and they’re doing their utmost to ensure they’re pushing the boundaries when it comes to climate tech.

What ‘energy transition’? Global fossil fuel use is accelerating!

What ‘energy transition’? Global fossil fuel use is accelerating and set to get even worse
  • Policymakers are under intensifying pressure to deliver on promises made as part of the Paris Agreement ahead of this year’s COP26, due to be held in Glasgow, Scotland in early November.
  • Yet, even as politicians and business leaders publicly acknowledge the necessity of transitioning to a low-carbon society, hopes of limiting global warming — and meeting a crucial global target — are quickly deteriorating.
  • “It is absolutely the case that the transition is moving too slowly from the climate perspective, but what is important to recognize is that it is primarily a matter of political will and economic choices,” Carroll Muffett, chief executive at the Center for International Environmental Law, told CNBC.

LONDON — The world’s dependency on fossil fuels is likely to get even worse in the coming decades, exacerbating the risk of a climate catastrophe as world leaders and CEOs repeatedly tout their commitment to the so-called “energy transition.”

Policymakers are under intensifying pressure to deliver on promises made as part of the Paris Agreement ahead of this year’s COP26, due to be held in Glasgow, Scotland in early November.

Yet, even as politicians and business leaders publicly acknowledge the necessity of transitioning to a low-carbon society, hopes of limiting global warming — and meeting a crucial global target — are quickly deteriorating.

Guan Eng wants ‘millions’ in defamation claim against blogger
Posted by: superadmin - 04-14-2021, 01:21 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: Lim-Guan-Eng-Raja-Petra-collage-140421.jpg]

KUALA LUMPUR: The High Court today set May 25 to deliver its decision on the quantum of damages to be awarded to former Penang chief minister Lim Guan Eng in his defamation lawsuit against blogger Raja Petra Kamarudin over allegations of corruption in the state’s undersea tunnel project.

Judicial commissioner Mohd Arief Emran Arifin fixed the date for the decision, which will be delivered through Zoom, after hearing Lim’s testimony and submission from his lawyer, Simon Murali.

Lim had obtained a default judgment against Raja Petra last year after the blogger failed to enter his appearance in court.

His legal team also applied to the court for substitute service in which notices of the suit were published in three newspapers. Raja Petra failed to respond to these by Feb 10, 2020, leading to Lim filing for a judgment in default.

Tough to avoid seat clashes but not impossible, says PAS
Posted by: superadmin - 04-14-2021, 01:17 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: While acknowledging that it would be quite difficult to avoid clashes among allies in the 15th general election (GE15), PAS remains optimistic that it can be achieved as long as negotiations are kept open.

PAS information chief Kamaruzaman Mohamad said the party wanted to give Umno the space to resolve certain “issues” that had hindered negotiations, especially after its decision to cut ties with PPBM.

“We still have a relationship with PPBM and Muafakat Nasional (MN). That’s why we have certain things that we want to resolve first before negotiating seat allocations,” he told FMT.

Kamaruzaman dismissed the perception that PAS was no longer negotiating seats with Umno, saying it was crucial for a resolution to be reached to avoid seat clashes in GE15.
