Apple profits double as it squares up to Facebook

A surge in iPhone sales, especially in China, has led to a doubling of profits at Apple since the start of the pandemic.

The results reflected "optimism" about the days ahead, Apple's boss said.

Rival tech firm Facebook also reported bumper revenues and profits.

But the social media giant warned Apple's latest software release could undermine its prospects later in the year.

Apple has seen sales of its phones, apps and other devices rise throughout the pandemic, as consumers spent more time working, shopping and seeking entertainment online.

Customers continued to upgrade to Apple's new 5G phones which were rolled out last year, and also bought Mac computers and iPads to tackle working and studying from home, the firm said.

Fitness and music apps also saw a lockdown boost.

Sales to China nearly doubled, leading to overall revenues for the first three months of this year of $89.6bn (£64.2bn), more than 50% up compared to a year earlier.

Profit was $23.6bn, up from $11.3bn for the same period last year.

"This quarter reflects both the enduring ways our products have helped our users meet this moment in their own lives, as well as the optimism consumers seem to feel about better days ahead for all of us," said chief executive Tim Cook.

China successfully launches first module of planned space station
Posted by: superadmin - 04-29-2021, 03:10 PM - Forum: Astronomy - No Replies

(CNN)For more than two decades, the International Space Station has orbited 227 nautical miles above Earth with more than 200 astronauts from 19 different countries enjoying stints aboard.

But its role as the sole venue for a continuous human presence in space, scientific research and a testing ground for future space exploration is coming to a close, potentially signaling an end to an unparalleled era of international cooperation in space.

China, whose astronauts have long been excluded from the ISS, successfully launched the first module of its planned space station on Thursday morning from the Wenchang launch site in the southern island of Hainan, according to the China National Space Administration.

The core module, currently the largest spacecraft developed by China, was launched into low earth orbit by a Long March-5B rocket, marking the first step of China's efforts to build its own station in two years.

"Currently, the facilities and equipment of Wenchang launch center are in good condition, and all the personnel participating in the program are making concerted efforts for the complete success of the mission," according to a statement on the website of China Manned Space Agency before the launch.

Russia has also said that it will leave the ISS project in 2025 and plans to build its own space station that could launch in 2030 -- if Russian President Vladimir Putin gives the go-ahead.

Don’t appoint politicians to company boards, says SC
Posted by: superadmin - 04-29-2021, 02:56 PM - Forum: Business. Economy and Investment - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: Active politicians should not be appointed to the boards of listed companies, the Securities Commission Malaysia (SC) said.

Instead, it said, all board members should be nominated based on their qualifications and legal responsibilities.

This is to promote the exercise of objective and independent judgment in line with global best practices.

Today, the statutory body updated the Malaysian Code on Corporate Governance (MCCG), which sees the introduction of new best practices and guidelines to strengthen corporate governance culture of listed companies.

Report: DAP must merge with other parties, or face a slow death, says Ronnie Liu
Posted by: superadmin - 04-29-2021, 10:56 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

KUALA LUMPUR, April 29 — One of the best prospects for a united Malaysia would be for DAP to merge with PKR and Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah), Sungai Pelek assemblyman Ronnie Liu said.

In doing so, he said this will lead to the creation of a more representative and larger multi-racial party.
“All three should dissolve and merge into one pluralistic party with a progressive outlook.

“I really hope that one day Pakatan Harapan will be a single, broad-based party instead of a coalition,” Liu said in a Malaysiakini report today.

Malaysia welcomes investments from China’s Greater Bay Area, says deputy minister

KUALA LUMPUR, April 29 ― Malaysia is always ready to welcome investors from China’s Greater Bay Area in various sectors ― especially the forerunners in high technology segments such as biotechnology and smart-home automation ― to explore the opportunities available in Malaysia.

Malaysia’s pro-business policies complement the Chinese government’s push to increase China’s overseas investment and cooperation with other countries, said International Trade and Industry (Miti) Deputy Minister Senator Datuk Lim Ban Hong.

“I am sure that China’s investors will find Malaysia an exciting base to expand their overseas operation, and I am confident that existing stakeholders will also attest to our commitment towards economic progress and business friendliness.

“Hence, we look forward to welcoming more businesses, from both China and Malaysia to further collaborate together for mutually beneficial outcomes on its road to recovery post-Covid-19,” he said during a virtual roundtable session with a delegation from Shenzhen, China.

PETALING JAYA: Khairy Jamaluddin has justified the RM70 million allocated for data integration costs and an appointment system under the National Covid-19 Immunisation Programme.

The science, technology and innovation minister said the allocated funds will go to the development of intermediary systems to facilitate the registration process and monitor vaccine supplies at vaccination centres.

Khairy’s explanation comes after social media users questioned the need for such a large amount of money to be spent on data integration and an appointment system.

The systems to be developed are:

Analysts: What does redelineation exercise really achieve? Do we really need more MPs
Posted by: superadmin - 04-28-2021, 03:20 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

KUALA LUMPUR, April 28 — While PAS’ insistence on redrawing electoral boundaries might have some merit, its focus should expand beyond the eastern states if it is serious about addressing malapportionment, said academics and rights advocates.

The analysts agreed with PAS’ Datuk Khairuddin Aman Razali's suggestion for electoral boundaries in Kedah, Pahang, Kelantan and Terengganu to be redelineated, but stressed that in the interest of justice, parliamentary and state lines in Selangor should be given a higher priority.

Praba Ganesan, chief executive of democratic rights group Kuasa, said if Khairuddin is serious about championing the peoples’ rights by redrawing the boundaries, he should have no issues with focusing on Selangor.

Selangor, which has consistently been an Opposition stronghold, has among the highest voter to representative ratio with an average electoral count of around 110,000 voters spread across 22 constituencies in the state.

Khairy: AstraZeneca dropped from Covid-19 vaccine programme, now only for those who want it

KUALA LUMPUR, April 28 — The government will not include the controversial AstraZeneca vaccine under the National Covid-19 Immunisation Programme (NIP), coordinating minister Khairy Jamaluddin announced today.

In a joint press conference with Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Adham Baba today, Khairy said the vaccine would instead be given through dedicated vaccination centres (PPV), on a first-come-first-served basis, to those who want to take the vaccine voluntarily.

He said the decision was taken to avoid disrupting the ongoing immunisation programme but reiterated that theAstraZeneca  vaccine was safe.
