COMMENT | This Int'l Women's Day, I'm thinking about how tired we are |

COMMENT | Readers, I’ve got to level with you: I struggled to write this piece. Not because writing can be soul-crushing work (though it’s not that), but because I’m a sceptic when it comes to the concept of “International Women’s Day”.
How do you adequately answer a question with such a broad range of answers: what does it mean to be a young woman in 2021?
I tried to find something to say that wasn’t so bleak or full of black rage, while also trying to convey that yes, feminists do have a sense of humour!
Would earnest curiosity punctuated by righteous suspicion work? “Men do care about the women’s movement, and here are five brands that prove it!”
I hope you’ll forgive my cynicism, but after 27 years in this female-presenting meat sack, it feels like the only rational response.
Jokes aside, writing this essay did force me to think long and hard about the meaning of womanhood in the year of our lord 2021. Are there good things about being a woman in the modern world? Or, put another way, has there ever been a better time to be a woman?
To wit, probably not. We stand more than 110 years from the moment (German socialist and feminist leader) Clara Zetkin declared the necessity of a worldwide celebration of women’s suffrage, and undeniably, there’s been a lot of change since.
Women have seen their life expectancy and wages improve. We have seen women ascend to the highest offices of power, we’ve seen girls lifted out of poverty and given the right to education, the right to drive, the right to vote.
Women are better educated, better represented in media and real life, are more enriched and empowered than probably at any other point in history. It’s quite nice, yeah?
And yet, despite Zetkin, despite the representation, and the hard-won rights and freedoms — is the world a better place for women-presenting folks? After all, the world is still a dangerous place for us: one in three women will face physical and/or sexual abuse in her lifetime.
We have barely broken 10 percent in Parliament and 30 percent in the boardroom.

Guan Eng: DAP cooperation with Umno only when it is of necessary public interest |

GEORGE TOWN, March 8 — DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng said today his party’s cooperation with Umno is on an ad hoc basis and only on issues that benefit the public.
He stressed that DAP does not plan to partner Umno for the coming general election, widely believed will be called this year.
“Don’t interpret this as more than what I said, there was nothing about cooperating with Umno for the general elections,” he said in a press conference at the Penang DAP headquarters here.
He said the party’s stance on cooperation with Umno has always been the same, that DAP is only willing to show its support to Umno on individual issues that benefit the people.
“We are willing to cooperate with Umno if it is public issues that benefit the rakyat, such as about convening the Parliament,” he said.

In PAS, two factions emerge as party heads towards internal poll |

KUALA LUMPUR, March 8 — A movement is believed to be growing in PAS, which could mount a challenge towards president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang in the internal election due this year.
Despite attempts from party leaders to dispel talk of such a faction and the purported rift, several PAS insiders have recently confirmed its existence when contacted by Malay Mail.
“Yes there is a movement from a faction in Terengganu to gain support to challenge for the presidential post.
“However, it was not as serious as it was portrayed in the social media,” said the PAS state leader who declined to be named.

She's the first female tour guide in Afghanistan, but she's determined not to be the last
(CNN) — For many people who work as tour guides, showing people around a new city involves a little bit of getting off the beaten track. But when there is no track at all, you just have to blaze one yourself.
That has been the story of Fatima, the only woman working as a tour guide in Afghanistan. The 22-year-old (who asked that CNN not use her surname for safety reasons) grew up leading sheep through the countryside, and now she leads tourists through the streets of Herat, the third-largest city in Afghanistan.

Trump says he'll campaign against Murkowski in Alaska next year |

(CNN)Former President Donald Trump said Saturday he plans to campaign against GOP Sen. Lisa Murkowski in Alaska next year when she's up for reelection, intensifying his pledges to oppose GOP lawmakers who have bucked him.
"I will not be endorsing, under any circumstances, the failed candidate from the great State of Alaska, Lisa Murkowski," Trump said in a statement first reported by Politico. "She represents her state badly and her country even worse. I do not know where other people will be next year, but I know where I will be -- in Alaska campaigning against a disloyal and very bad Senator."
Saturday was not the first time Trump threatened to campaign against Murkowski, making a pledge to do so in a series of critical tweets in June. But his attacks on Republican incumbents are another example of the sharp divide between the establishment wing of the party, represented by people like Murkowski and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, and the Trump wing in the wake of his presidency.
Murkowski was one of seven Republican senators who voted to convict Trump in his second impeachment trial last month and is the only one facing voters next year.
During Trump's first public speech since leaving office, at the Conservative Political Action Conference late last month, he called Murkowski and other Republicans who backed impeachment "grandstanders" and "Republicans in name only," or "RINOs."

Political backstabbing, double-dealing at all-time high |

PETALING JAYA: As general election fever begins to take hold, all eyes are now focused on which electoral seats are best, which party will win, and which politician will be on the A-list of the winning party’s president.
With rising speculation that elections may be held this year, MPs and state assemblymen have been in search of their best option for success, either by sleeping with the enemy or trying to buy the trust of their president.
Political analyst Kenneth Cheng said backstabbing is to be expected as the governing Perikatan Nasional coalition holds only a wafer-thin majority in the Dewan Rakyat.
“Either side only needs to woo one or two MPs to have a majority. If the present government was strong, this would not happen,” he said.

PETALING JAYA: A retired Federal Court judge wants committal proceedings to be instituted against PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang for making a scurrilous attack against a Federal Court bench over their ruling that a Selangor shariah enactment which criminalises unnatural sex was unconstitutional.
Gopal Sri Ram said it was obvious from Hadi’s statement that he had not read Chief Justice Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat’s judgment.
“In my respectful view, his statement is highly contemptuous both of the court and the Federal Constitution. His attack shows his complete disregard for the rule of law,” he told FMT.
Sri Ram was referring to a statement posted by Hadi on his Facebook page two days ago in response to the verdict by a nine-member bench on Feb 25.

Put aside leaders with criminal charges to move forward, Musa Hitam urges Umno |

KUALA LUMPUR, Mar 7 — Former deputy prime minister Tun Musa Hitam said Umno needs to put aside its leaders who are facing criminal charges, until proven innocent, as a means to revitalise the party.
In an interview with Utusan Malaysia’s Sunday edition Mingguan Malaysia, Musa who was an Umno deputy president, said when the party decides to take a principled stance on the issue, only then public trust can be regained.
“Firstly, Umno has to take the stance that whoever is related to [criminal] charges in court, has to be put aside until they can prove their innocence. Only with that can the public respect us,” he was quoted saying, referring to Umno.
In the interview, Musa also explained that severe infighting within Umno has caused the party to be splintered into three factions.

PETALING JAYA: From budget airlines to flying taxis and urban drone deliveries — this is AirAsia’s newest venture.
The move, which is expected to take off in about a year, will boost the urban transport and delivery support system to new heights, according to its group chief executive officer Tony Fernandes.
He said they would be using four-seater flying taxis flown by pilots to ferry people and products.
Fernandes said people could book these services using their phones and a pilot will pick them up and send them to their destinations.
