Fixing Malaysia’s deadly addiction to cheap foreign labour
Posted by: superadmin - 03-02-2021, 02:13 PM - Forum: Business. Economy and Investment - No Replies

[Image: k-kathirgugan-columnist-latest-040121.jpg]

As I drove through the industrial area in Senai, Johor, I saw droves of Bangladeshis walking along the side of a road, presumably en route to their factory floor. And on the other side of the same road, I saw a line of Indonesians streaming out of a blue “bas pekerja” (factory bus).

But such a sight is increasingly not just confined to industrial areas. Central Kuala Lumpur has looked less Malaysian and more foreign for a while now. And when I rode the iconic Penang ferry last year, it carried just as many foreign workers as it did Malaysians – a sight that starkly contrasted with my childhood days.

These remarks are not meant to be xenophobic in the least, merely an observation of a dangerous trend that’s arresting Malaysia’s development and keeping us locked in middle-income nation territory.

With Sng out, Sarawak PKR in no hurry to fill top post
Posted by: superadmin - 03-02-2021, 12:03 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

The resignation of Larry Sng (left) from PKR leaves the party with only one MP in Sarawak,
Miri representative Dr Michael Teo.
KUCHING: Following the resignation of state chairman Larry Sng, Sarawak PKR is expected to leave the position vacant until after the 12th state election to avoid any attempts by political rivals to woo its top leadership.

Socio-political analyst Awang Azman Awang Pawi of Universiti Malaya said the party will be in no hurry to appoint a new chairman to replace the Julau MP, who confirmed his resignation on Sunday to back Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin.

“It is unlikely that the party will announce a new chairman anytime soon as the state leadership committee can lead the party even during elections,” Awang Azman told FMT.

He said Sng’s resignation was not something unexpected and it was time for PKR to “cleanse” the party.

Taylor Swift didn't appreciate that 'Ginny & Georgia' joke

(CNN)Taylor Swift is over the jokes.

The singer tweeted Monday to express her displeasure with a joke included in the Netflix series "Ginny & Georgia."

"Hey Ginny & Georgia, 2010 called and it wants its lazy, deeply sexist joke back," Swift tweeted along with a close caption of the joke "What do you care? You go through men faster than Taylor Swift."

Swift's romances have been well documented, as has the fact that she's been in a relationship for a while now with British actor Joe Alwyn.

The 50 most ridiculous lines from Donald Trump's CPAC speech
Posted by: superadmin - 03-02-2021, 10:22 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: 210228165529-02-donald-trump-cpac-0228-m...us-169.jpg]

(CNN)Donald Trump delivered his first major post-presidential speech on Sunday, an address to the Conservative Political Action Conference laden with falsehoods and attacks on his fellow Republicans -- suggesting absolutely nothing has changed since he ceased being president on January 20.

I went through the speech and pulled out the lines you need to see. They're below.

1. "Do you miss me yet? Do you miss me?"
At root, Trump wants to be loved. Forever. And away we go!

2. "I stand before you today to declare that the incredible journey we've begun together, we went through a journey like nobody else. There's never been a journey like it."
Never been a journey that incredible? Um, these two dogs and a cat would disagree.

3. "We've been doing a lot of winning."
During Trump's four years, Republicans lost the House majority, the Senate majority and the White House.

Let us buy and administer vaccines, private hospitals tell govt
Posted by: superadmin - 03-02-2021, 10:12 AM - Forum: Covid-19 Pandemic - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: The association representing private hospitals in Malaysia has urged the government to allow its members to buy their own supply of Covid-19 vaccines and administer them.

This comes after science, technology, and innovation minister Khairy Jamaluddin was reported by CodeBlue as saying there is no immediate provision for private hospitals to buy and run their own vaccination programmes.

“There are also no supplies for private hospitals at the moment. But, we will consider it later,” he was quoted as saying.

In a statement today, Association of Private Hospitals Malaysia president Dr Kuljit Singh said private hospitals can procure vaccines from different sources once approvals are granted by the National Pharmaceutical Regulatory Agency (NPRA).

IPOH, March 1 — No one knows how long octogenarian Choo Ken Tong has been making the five-foot way his home.

He was living on the side of the road until Pertubuhan Amal Ai Xin Fan Tong Ipoh advisor Kat W. Wong came upon him when she was delivering food to vagabonds at Jalan Toh Puan Chah in December.

“The shop owners asked us to help the 81-year-old as he had been staying there for quite some time,” she said.

Speaking to Malay Mail, Wong said she decided to bring Choo to a half-way house run by the organisation for shelter.

China’s spending on research and development climbed 10.3% to 2.44 trillion Chinese yuan ($378 billion) in 2020, according to the nation’s National Bureau of Statistics.

The bureau said in a press release on Sunday that R&D spend, which looks to develop new services or products, accounted for 2.4% of China’s gross domestic product.

It’s a new record for China but it’s also the slowest incremental growth in five years and down from a 12.5% rise in 2019.

The bureau said that by the end of 2020, China had 522 “national key laboratories” and 350 “national engineering research centers” in operation.

It added that some 457,000 projects were funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China last year and 3.6 million patents were granted, up from 40% on 2019.

Trump unleashes new threat to American democracy
Posted by: superadmin - 03-01-2021, 08:26 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: 210228165529-02-donald-trump-cpac-0228-m...us-169.jpg]

(CNN)Donald Trump has no remorse about the deadly violence he incited with his lies about a stolen election in his uprising against the US Congress.

This much was clear when the ex-President put the Republican Party on notice on Sunday that he intends to use his hold on its grassroots to try to suppress the vote heading into the presidential election in 2024, in which he hinted he might run. In his first public remarks since leaving the White House, he also dangerously lashed out at Supreme Court justices for failing to intervene to throw him the election he clearly lost to President Joe Biden.

"They should be ashamed of themselves for what they've done to our country ... the Supreme Court didn't have the guts or the courage to do anything about it," Trump fumed in an authoritarian speech at the Conservative Political Action Conference, in Orlando, Florida, referring to false fraud claims thrown out by multiple judges.

Are vaccines mandatory, asks think tank citing health DG’s criteria for travel ban
Posted by: superadmin - 03-01-2021, 03:49 PM - Forum: Business. Economy and Investment - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: A think tank has called for the government to clarify whether Covid-19 vaccines are compulsory or otherwise, pointing to contradictory statements from government leaders.

The Center for Market Education (CME) noted that science, technology and innovation minister Khairy Jamaluddin had said the national Covid-19 immunisation programme would be a voluntary exercise.

But it said health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah’s statement that the ban on interstate and inter-district travel may only be lifted after 70% of the population had been vaccinated implied that the vaccines were mandatory.

“If Malaysians cannot even think about interdistrict travel without mass vaccination, this means that vaccination becomes hiddenly compulsory,” it said in a statement today.
