Sources: MIC, MCA never agreed to Ahmad Maslan’s appointment as BN sec-gen

KUALA LUMPUR, March 6 — The appointment of Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan as Barisan Nasional (BN) secretary-general was disputed by its component parties MCA and MIC.

Sources familiar with a BN meeting that took place on Thursday told Malay Mail that both component parties had opposed Ahmad’s appointment in January as they were not consulted on the matter prior to the announcement.

“Both MCA and MIC want Umno to discuss with them before such decisions are made,” said the source without elaborating further.

On January 5, Ahmad confirmed that he had replaced Tan Sri Annuar Musa as BN’s secretary-general.

Ahmad, who is also the Umno secretary-general, said the appointment does not mean that Annuar had been sacked, but clarified that he merely replaced the latter.

KUALA LUMPUR, March 6 — Seven areas in peninsular Malaysia recorded yellow (alert) level heat wave as at 4.30pm yesterday, according to the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia).

The department’s portal showed the locations were Chuping, Perlis; Kota Setar, Kedah; Kuala Kangsar, Perak; Sepang, Selangor; Alor Gajah, Melaka and Tangkak and Batu Pahat di Johor.

However, no areas in Sabah or Sarawak recorded a heat wave situation. The maximum daily temperature recorded in the two states was less than 35 degrees.

Yellow level refers to a daily maximum temperature of 35 to 37 degrees Celsius for at least three consecutive days.

More than 20,000 U.S. organizations have been compromised through a back door installed via recently patched flaws in Microsoft’s email software, a person familiar with the U.S. government’s response said on Friday.

The hacking has already reached more places than all of the tainted code downloaded from SolarWinds Corp, the company at the heart of another massive hacking spree uncovered in December.

The latest hack has left channels for remote access spread among credit unions, town governments and small businesses, according to records from the U.S. investigation.

Tens of thousands of organizations in Asia and Europe are also affected, the records show.

The hacks are continuing despite emergency patches issued by Microsoft on Tuesday.

PM’s plan for escaping middle-income trap old fashioned, say economists
Posted by: superadmin - 03-06-2021, 10:21 AM - Forum: Business. Economy and Investment - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: Two economists have scoffed at Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin’s ideas for springing Malaysia out of the middle-income trap, saying they reflect a mindset that is too traditional.

The project required fresher ideas, said Geoffrey Williams of Malaysia University of Science and Technology (MUST) and Mohamed Aslam Haneef of International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM).

Muhyiddin said at a recent economic forum that Malaysia needed to become a global export player producing new, sophisticated and high-value products.

He also said Malaysia needed to develop home-bred multinational companies because the payoff in economic growth would be “very high”.

Williams told FMT he felt that the attachment to manufacturing, in a world in which the services sector was becoming more dominant, reflected an old-fashioned mindset.

“The middle-income trap happens if countries can’t produce high-value-added products and have lost their competitive advantage from low-wages, usually in manufacturing,” he said.

“It causes slower growth, lower investment and difficulty in keeping up with advanced lifestyles.

“Malaysia cannot rely on low-wage competition, especially since this now relies on foreign workers who are suffering terribly, as the human resources minister has said.

Umno-PPBM rift seen as clearing path for Sabah, Sarawak kingmakers
Posted by: superadmin - 03-06-2021, 10:15 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: A political analyst sees Umno’s decision against working with PPBM in the coming general election as giving Sabah and Sarawak parties their best chance yet to be kingmakers.

Jeniri Amir, a fellow of the National Council of Professors, said it was unlikely that any single party or coalition could dominate the polls now that Malay-based parties are going head to head and Pakatan Harapan (PH) is weakened like never before.

“PH does not have the momentum it did in GE14 and it cannot count on Dr Mahathir Mohamad and PPBM for Malay support,” he said.
“Umno is divided and PPBM is a weak party. So there is little reason for Sabah and Sarawak parties to dance to anyone’s tune.”

Tok Mat: Umno’s decision on Bersatu not influenced by anyone
Posted by: superadmin - 03-06-2021, 10:00 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

Instead, the party was only fulfilling grassroots members’ demands, he said.

“Umno is a mature party .we will no longer be with Bersatu during the election.

“This is not a decision made by one or two people but more than 100 divisions, so there is no issue that it was influenced by anyone,” he told reporters after chairing the Negri Sembilan Muafakat Nasional (MN) committee meeting here, today, with state PAS commissioner Rafiei Mustapha also present.

He was commenting on Barisan Nasional former secretary-general Tan Sri Annuar Musa’s statement who claimed that Umno seemed to be under the influence of opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

KOTA KINABALU, March 5 — Parti Warisan Sabah’s Youth wing has lodged a report today with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) against Sebatik assemblyman Hassan Gani Amir following his exit from the party recently.

Its deputy Youth chief Ismail Ayub said that the wing had made the report and submitted nine documents along with a photo that “showed clear evidence” of the movement of state assemblymen lately.

“We will leave it to the MACC to investigate,” he said when speaking to reporters at the state MACC office.

Among the documents provided were Hassan’s pre-signed resignation letter, a video of him pledging his commitment to remain with the party when he accepted his candidacy and a letter appointing lawyers to send the resignation letter on his behalf.
