Indonesia’s central bank expects billions of foreign funds to return – supporting the rupiah
- Indonesian rupiah is expected to strengthen further against the U.S. dollar as foreign investors could pile billions back into the country’s financial market, said Perry Warjiyo, governor of Bank Indonesia.
- The currency has has stayed roughly flat against the U.S. dollar this year, after losing 1.1% to the greenback in 2020 at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic.
- Warjiyo estimated an inflow of around $19.6 billion of foreign funds this year into the Indonesian

Justice Department watchdog investigating possible attempt to overturn election results
(CNN)The Justice Department's internal watchdog will investigate whether any department official sought to have the department overturn President Joe Biden's election win.
The office of Inspector General Michael Horowitz is launching "an investigation into whether any former or current DOJ official engaged in an improper attempt to have DOJ seek to alter the outcome of the 2020 Presidential Election," it announced Monday.
The probe comes on the heels of reports from The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal that former President Donald Trump attempted to use his Justice Department to challenge the election results, an effort that included the possibility of Trump ousting then-acting Attorney General Jeffery Rosen.

Election technology company Dominion sues Giuliani for $1.3 billion over 'Big Lie' about election fraud
(CNN)An election technology company that has been the focus of consistent conspiracy theories by Donald Trump and his allies has sued the former President's lawyer Rudy Giuliani for defamation after he pushed the "Big Lie" about election fraud on his podcast and TV appearances.
Dominion Voting Systems is seeking more than $1.3 billion in damages.
"Just as Giuliani and his allies intended, the Big Lie went viral on social media as people tweeted, retweeted, and raged that Dominion had stolen their votes. While some lies -- little lies -- flare up on social media and die with the next news cycle, the Big Lie was different," lawyers for Dominion wrote in the lawsuit, filed in DC District Court on Monday morning. "The harm to Dominion's business and reputation is unprecedented and irreparable because of how fervently millions of people believe it."
The lawsuit notes that while Giuliani spread falsehoods about Dominion being owned by Venezuelan communists and corrupting the election, he did not make those claims in lawsuits he pushed on behalf of Trump.
"Dominion's defamation lawsuit for $1.3B will allow me to investigate their history, finances, and practices fully and completely," Giuliani told CNN in a statement Monday. "The amount being asked for is, quite obviously, intended to frighten people of faint heart. It is another act of intimidation by the hate-filled left-wing to wipe out and censor the exercise of free speech, as well as the ability of lawyers to defend their clients vigorously."

Anwar sues PM over Parliament suspension in Emergency, seeks court order to declare Muhyiddin’s advice to Agong illegal, unconstitutional
KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 26 — PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has filed a lawsuit against the prime minister and the Malaysian government in a bid to have the court declare that Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin gave unlawful advice to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong to suspend Parliament during the Emergency declared nationwide via an Emergency Ordinance.
In announcing the lawsuit, DAP’s Bukit Gelugor MP Ramkarpal Singh, who is a practising lawyer, said that the application for leave for judicial review was filed yesterday by Anwar at the High Court in Kuala Lumpur, with the lawsuit filed in Anwar’s capacity as the Opposition Leader in the Dewan Rakyat.
“Among reliefs sought in that application is a declaration from court that the prime minister’s advice to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong to suspend Parliament during the period of the Emergency proclaimed recently is against the law and not in line with the Federal Constitution,” Ramkarpal, who is also DAP’s legal bureau chairman, said in a brief statement today.
“It has to be stressed here that what is being challenged in that application is not the Proclamation of Emergency, but the decision of the prime minister (through the Cabinet) to advise the Yang di-Pertuan Agong to approve rule 14 of the Emergency (Essential Powers) Ordinance 2021 that suspends Parliament during the Emergency period. The prime minister’s advice is said to be in contravention of the law,” he added.

PETALING JAYA: Two academics say the Federal Constitution and Rukun Negara, two of Malaysia’s most fundamental documents, are enough to lay the groundwork to redefine the nation’s future.
Chandra Muzaffar and Denison Jayasooria said there was no need to reinvent the wheel by setting up a new National Consultative Council (NCC) to set the nation’s course through a new social contract.
Prominent banker Nazir Razak, son of Malaysia’s second prime minister Abdul Razak Hussein, had recently proposed that a new social contract be drawn up.
However, Chandra, a political scientist and social activist, said the Federal Constitution and the Rukun Negara were very good documents which provide the basis for strengthening unity among the people and overcoming major challenges.
“The only problem is that we need to be sincere and honest in trying to give meaning to these two documents. Looking at the constitution, it’s quite balanced in terms of recognising rights, aspirations and so on.
“While Islam is the official religion of the federation under the constitution, freedom of worship for other religions is also guaranteed. So there’s a balance that’s realistic and based upon the realities of our society,” he said.

GEORGE TOWN, Jan 25 — The five-star Hotel Equatorial Penang is set to close down effective March 31 this year.
In an internal circular to employees, general manager Alan Ong said the directors of the hotel made the announcement of closure today due to the adverse business conditions caused by Covid-19.
He wrote that the last day of business to the public is yet to be decided but it will be before March 31.
“Until we officially cease operations, all of you shall remain as employees of the hotel and we remain committed to upkeep the strong heritage and name of Hotel Equatorial Penang,” Ong said in the letter with today’s date.
Ong said the company has suffered huge losses but will still pay severance benefits to hotel employees, the details of which will be announced later.
He said the company will strive to meet all obligations in accordance with the terms and conditions of employment for all employees.
A hotel employee, when contacted, confirmed receiving the letter from Ong today.
The hotel, which is about 30 years old, is located 250 feet above sea level at the southwest district of the island near to the industrial zones and the Penang International Airport.
It is a convention resort with 413 guest rooms catered primarily to business travellers, meetings, banquets and conventions. It has two large column-free ballrooms that can accommodate up to 2,600 people and 21 function rooms.

When people asked about Malaysia, the first thing we talked about was our fundamental strength, our diversity.
What is Malaysia if we fail to celebrate inclusivity?
When I first read about the cancellation of Thaipusam public holiday by Kedah Menteri Besar Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor, I was really disappointed.
Even worse was when he made a comment of “mabuk todi populariti” (drunk on the toddy of popularity). The sheer disrespect and insensitivity behind the comment from the state’s highest official were mortifying.

History made: Renewable energy surpassed fossil fuels for European electricity in 2020
New York (CNN Business)Europeans got more of their electricity from renewable sources than fossil fuels for the first time last year, according to an annual report from Ember and Agora Energiewende.
The report, which has been tracking EU's power sector since 2015, found that renewables delivered 38% of electricity last year, compared to 37% delivered by fossil fuels.
The shift comes as other sources, such as wind and solar power, have risen in the European Union. Both sources have nearly doubled since 2015, and as of last year accounted for one-fifth of electricity generation in EU countries, the report found. It's also the reason why coal power declined 20% last year, making up only 13% of electricity generated in Europe.
