With a day to go, squash queen Nicol David takes massive lead in online poll for ‘greatest athlete of all time’
KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 31 — Datuk Nicol Ann David appears set to be named the “greatest athlete of all time” in an online poll conducted by The World Games, leading the next closest contender by nearly 150,000 votes.
Her lead is also more than the 107,822 cast for tug-of-war champion James Kehoe of Ireland up to today.
The award is based on online votes cast in favour of the athletes.
David was among the 10 shortlisted for the final voting on January 20.

GameStop, Reddit and Robinhood: A full recap of the historic retail trading mania on Wall Street
- Shares of GameStop skyrocketed 400% in the past week, closing out January with a whopping 1,625% gain.
- A band of amateur traders on WallStreetBets aimed to bid up heavily shorted stocks “to the moon,” creating massive short squeezes.
- Members in the Reddit forum have tripled to 6.5 million in just a week.
- The mania backfired on free-trading pioneer Robinhood, which had to throttle back trading in the short-squeeze names and raise new funds to meet rising deposit requirements with its clearinghouse.

Trump loses his impeachment team amid unfaltering loyalty from the GOP |

(CNN)Former President Donald Trump's lies and his insistence that the November election was rigged against him may have turned out to be a bridge too far for the attorneys who were slated to defend him in his upcoming Senate impeachment trial in a little more than a week.
But his party has stuck with him. After a brief flirtation with reason and sound judgment in the weeks following the January 6 siege at the Capitol, the Republican Party has decided to honor their deep and often blind allegiance to Trump, choosing to overlook his role in inciting the deadly insurrection rather than pay the price of crossing him and his base next year at the ballot box.
The collapse of Trump's legal team amid a disagreement over legal strategy, which CNN first reported Saturday night, stood in stark contrast to the slow crawl of Republican elected leaders back into the former President's corner as the anger lawmakers feel about the insurrection fades and his potential power to help or destroy them in the 2022 elections becomes paramount.
While the Republican Party continues to bend to Trump's whims, forgive his dangerous behavior, and quiver in the face of his election threats, the judiciary and the legal profession are adhering to a higher ethical standard -- and have largely refused to tolerate his efforts to ramrod the nation's democratic institutions and founding principles throughout his baseless election charade -- making the GOP's loyalty to Trump even more appalling.

Ikea bought 11,000 acres of forest in Georgia to protect it from development |

(CNN)An investment group of Swedish retail giant Ikea has acquired forestland in southeast Georgia to protect the land and its diverse ecosystems from development.
The Ingka Group, which owns and operates most Ikea stores, purchased 10,840 acres of land near the Altamaha River Basin, the company announced on January 14.
"We truly believe responsible forest management is possible and we see that a large part of our responsibility towards the land we own -- and by extension the planet -- is to restore forests and plant more than we harvest," Ingka Investments managing director Krister Mattsson told CNN.
"In all our properties nature conservation is important. In this particular US investment in Georgia, first it is important that the land cannot be broken up into small units and it remains forever forestland."
The land, acquired from non-profit conservation organization The Conservation Fund, is home to more than 350 plant and wildlife species -- including the endangered longleaf pine and gopher tortoise -- which are now protected.

Tommy Thomas says PAS helped him keep AG job, after Dr M asked him to resign the next day in 2018
KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 31 — Tan Sri Tommy Thomas has reportedly said that PAS may have helped him stay as attorney general, instead of resigning the next day after his appointment in June 2018 to the country’s top legal post.
News portal Malaysiakini cited the full prologue of Thomas’ book My Story: Justice in the Wilderness, after the book was released and made available to the public yesterday.
Previously in reports of an excerpt of the prologue released by the memoir’s seller Gerakbudaya, Thomas had suggested that he could have been the attorney general for just a single day, due to Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s concern about the “scale and magnitude of the Malay opposition” to his appointment.
Thomas had said he was “utterly astounded” that Dr Mahathir had wanted him to resign the next day, after the prime minister told him in June 2018 that the Yang di-Pertuan Agong had assented to his appointment as attorney general.

Fox Outfoxed? - Former AG's Explosive Memoir Blames Dr M For The Implosion Of Pakatan |

The former Attorney General, who resigned in the wake of the collapse of the Pakatan Harapan administration in March, has kept his counsel till now about what he observed at the heart of government as the coalition collapsed.
At the climax of an about to be published memoir, spanning his career as a reforming barrister in Malaysia, he reveals a series of previously unknown facts that shed crucial light on the significance of those events.
The chapter, which Tommy Thomas says it pained him to write given his overall respect for the former prime minister, details why in his analysis Dr Mahathir holds the greatest responsibility for the implosion of what had been a stable government.
Quote:“I have found these paragraphs difficult to write. It pains me to be critical of the Prime Minister who had appointed me, and stood by me over twenty months despite massive attacks from the majority race. But posterity will judge harshly the three decisions that Tun Dr. Mahathir took on Monday, 24th February 2020.”
In the largely dispassionate tone that characterises his narrative that nonetheless touches on many of the most emotional and dramatic moments in Malaysian history, Thomas brings a legal perspective as to where in his view Mahathir misstepped.
As AG at the time he had a unique insight.
The first surprise (or “utter shock” as Thomas describes it) came when a friend texted him at 1.30pm on Monday 24th February, the day after the so-called Sheraton Move, to say that Mahathir had submitted a letter of resignation to the King.
He immediately visited the PM’s private office to discover it was true. Until that point, says Thomas, he had been ‘bullish’ about the antics of the relative handful of defectors.

Tawfik Ismail
PETALING JAYA: The call for “Malay unity” is the only motivation behind Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin’s administration, according to former Umno politician Tawfik Ismail.
He said the core problem faced by Muhyiddin is the lack of talent available to him in the coalition government that he leads.
“What is the manifesto that motivates this government? So far the public sees the motivation is “Malay Unity”,” he told FMT in an interview.
Tawfik said the state of politics after the “Sheraton Move” in February last year had splintered Malay support further and divided Umno, with progressive Malays becoming increasingly concerned over the running of the country.

PETALING JAYA: Two instances of favouritism by Malaysian authorities convinced Hashim Abdul Rahman to migrate to Australia half a century ago. He never returned, save for occasional visits and instead rose to prominence in Australia, becoming known as Uncle Hashim.
Last week, he received one of Australia’s highest honours, the Order of Australia Medal, for his services to the Muslim community and setting up halal certification.
Hashim said his heart never left the country, even though he had to give up Malaysian citizenship as an Australian public servant, and also to better represent Malaysians in Australia.
Reflecting on why he never returned, he said that family obligations and the favouritism that had gone against him helped make the choice clear.

PETALING JAYA: Selangor Task Force Covid-19 (STFC) chairman Dzulkefly Ahmad has sounded the alarm, saying that any further delay by the authorities to hire more frontliners will see the number of Covid-19 cases “skyrocketing”.
He said having more frontliners means faster testing and training, and the sooner the authorities did that, the better it would be to contain the spread of the pandemic.
“Selangor will suffer the most if we take it slow,” the former health minister said in a statement.
“Any further delay means we’ll only be tracking the virus reactively and watch transmissions skyrocket.”

Pejuang must get PH’s blessing to use Amanah logo, says Mahfuz |

PETALING JAYA: Amanah vice-president Mahfuz Omar says his party’s logo cannot be used by Pejuang in the 15th general election (GE15) unless they obtain Pakatan Harapan’s agreement.
This comes after Pejuang pro tem deputy president Marzuki Yahya said the party may consider contesting in GE15 using the Amanah logo if it continued to face problems in its application for registration.
Mahfuz maintained that Amanah was still a part of PH, which meant that any use of the party’s logo needed to be decided by the coalition.
“For example, in the last elections, we agreed to contest under the PKR banner. After we won the elections, we used PH’s logo to contest in by-elections. So our principle is clear — only one logo should be used (by all parties),” he told FMT.
