MP SPEAKS | Is Malaysia in danger of being the new 'sick man' of Southeast Asia?
Posted by: superadmin - 02-01-2021, 12:08 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

MP SPEAKS | In the 1970s and 1980s, the Philippines was known as the ‘sick man’ of Asia because of its poor economic record and unwillingness of foreign companies to invest in the country under the dictatorship of Ferdinand Marcos. Even after the fall of Marcos in 1986, it took the Philippines decades before foreign investors returned to the country.

Is Malaysia in danger of going down the same path and be seen as the new ‘sick man’ of Asia in the 2020s because of political ineptitude and the inability to manage the Covid-19 crisis under the Perikatan Nasional (PN) government?

The inability of the PN government to manage the third wave of Covid-19 cases has resulted in the second movement control order (MCO 2.0) at the start of 2021.

At the same time, new data has emerged which shows a significant decline in foreign investor confidence in Malaysia. According to the January 2021 issue of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), it was reported that foreign direct investment (FDI) inflows to South East Asia fell by 31 percent to US$107 billion in 2020.

Elon Musk’s tweets are moving markets — and some investors are worried
Posted by: superadmin - 02-01-2021, 11:32 AM - Forum: Business, Economy and Investment - No Replies

  • Bitcoin’s value jumped more than 20% to $38,566 on Friday after Elon Musk changed his personal Twitter bio to #bitcoin.
  • His tweets have caused other assets to shift recently including shares in GameStop and Etsy.
  • Some investors are now calling on regulators to get involved.
Bitcoin’s value jumped more than 20% to $38,566 on Friday after Elon Musk, the world’s richest person, changed his personal Twitter bio to #bitcoin, fueling speculation that he had bought more of the cryptocurrency.

Less than 24 hours earlier, the billionaire appeared to prompt shares in CD Projekt, which makes the Cyberpunk 2077 computer game, to surge more than 12% after he said via Twitter that a new model of Tesla’s Model S Plaid car would allow passengers to play the game.

Several hours later, Musk said, “With Cyberpunk, even the hotfixes literally have hotfixes, but … great game.”

Something went terribly wrong with Trump's defense
Posted by: superadmin - 02-01-2021, 11:27 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

(CNN)Just over a week before the start of his second impeachment trial, former President Donald Trump's entire legal team has walked away. What already promised to be an unpredictable and unprecedented show on the Senate floor just got even messier, as it appears that Trump will insist on repeating the same dangerous lie that sparked the Capitol riot -- that the election was stolen from him -- and led to his (second) impeachment in the first place.

Here's what we know. The mass resignations of all five of Trump's lawyers show us something has gone terribly wrong on the defense team. And these lawyers were no hacks -- several of them are Justice Department alums, and the (former) lead attorney, Butch Bowers, was a government ethics specialist. They would not abandon a client this close to trial without darn good reason.

Any defense attorney holds a broad obligation to represent his or her client zealously. That's a crucial part of our adversarial justice system. But there are limits on what a defense attorney can argue. For example, per the American Bar Association, it would be unethical for any attorney to raise an argument "that he knows to be false." The "rigged election" narrative certainly fits that description.

It's telling that the source of the falling-out between Trump and his (former) lawyers was his insistence that they raise the "stolen election" defense. Trump's defenders certainly could have argued in good faith and within ethical boundaries that it is unconstitutional to hold an impeachment trial for a former president, or that Trump's actions were protected political speech under the First Amendment. I disagree with both of these arguments on the merits, but Trump and his attorneys certainly would have been within their rights to make these claims before the Senate. But the "stolen election" argument crosses a line.

Netizens ask why UMMC is turning to the public for funds
Posted by: superadmin - 02-01-2021, 11:20 AM - Forum: Local News - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: Malaysians who initially suspected University Malaya Medical Centre’s (UMMC) Lazada fundraiser to be a scam are curious to find out why it is asking for donations after finding out that it is real.

First circulated by user zt000tz, the twitter thread linking the fundraiser page called “Pusat Perubatan University Malaysia” has since been retweeted more than 1,300 times.

User zt00otz said she called UMMC’s secretariat several times to confirm if it was official but to no avail.

Another user, irhamzin1, was sceptical of the fundraiser and asked whether it was officially sanctioned.

Jumpstart the electric vehicle industry, Putrajaya told
Posted by: superadmin - 02-01-2021, 08:48 AM - Forum: Business. Economy and Investment - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: Putrajaya should formulate “radical” policies to drive Malaysia into the electric vehicle (EVs) and autonomous driving business, according to a seasoned motor industry watcher.

Former motoring journalist Yamin Vong suggested that tax rebates be provided to make electric vehicles attractive to buyers in the premium market, while for the mass market, a “cash-for-clunkers” could encourage people to trade in their jalopies.

Such ideas could help the Malaysian motor industry, particularly Proton, to benefit from a recent agreement between two major Chinese companies, Zhejiang Geely and Tencent Holdings, to develop the smart vehicle cockpit and autonomous driving technology.

Myanmar’s Suu Kyi, other senior figures ‘taken’ in late-night raid
Posted by: superadmin - 02-01-2021, 08:43 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

YANGON: Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi and other senior figures from the ruling party have been detained in an early morning raid, the spokesman for the governing National League for Democracy said on Monday.

The move came after days of escalating tension between the civilian government and the powerful military that stirred fears of a coup in the aftermath of an election the army says was fraudulent.

Spokesman Myo Nyunt told Reuters by phone that Suu Kyi, President Win Myint and other leaders had been “taken” in the early hours of the morning.

“I want to tell our people not to respond rashly and I want them to act according to the law,” he said, adding he also expected to be detained.

YOURSAY | Amanah, think carefully before allowing Pejuang on board
Posted by: superadmin - 02-01-2021, 08:40 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

Iphonezours: Amanah, be careful and think wisely. Will Amanah benefit anything with Pejuang using your logo?

The situation now is different from 2018, when at that time people trusted Mahathir and his ‘genuine’ intentions.

However, after his treacherous resignation and behind-the-scene schemes, people know the truth and may not forgive him for what he has done.

Mahathir has lost a lot of support from Malaysians and by associating with Amanah’s logo, he just wants to ride on your goodwill.

Ex-AG says Mahathir’s monumental betrayal made way for Trump-like Muhyiddin
Posted by: superadmin - 02-01-2021, 08:34 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: Mahathir-Muhyiddin-bernama-120520-3.jpg]

PETALING JAYA: Former attorney general Tommy Thomas has harsh words for Dr Mahathir Mohamad, whose resignation as prime minister in February 2020 paved the way for Muhyddin Yassin to take power.

In an epilogue to his recently-published memoirs, Thomas described Mahathir’s resignation as “a monumental betrayal”.

In a Churchillian turn of phrase, Thomas said: “Seldom in our nation’s history have so many million voters been let down by the actions of one man.”

Mahathir resigned on Feb 24, causing the collapse of the Pakatan Harapan government two years after it came to power in the 2018 general election. His resignation led the Yang di-Pertuan Agong to seek a new prime minister and cabinet from members of Parliament.

Look at yourself in the mirror, PKR Youth tells Azmin
Posted by: superadmin - 01-31-2021, 06:03 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: Syed-Badli-Shah-Syed-Osman-Mohamed-Azmin-Ali-FMT.jpg]

PETALING JAYA: PKR Youth has advised Mohamed Azmin Ali to have a good look at himself in the mirror before accusing others of being involved in immoral conduct and wants the police to update the status of the alleged “gay sex” video involving him.

Slamming the former party deputy for citing Anwar Ibrahim’s alleged sexual conduct for leaving the party to join PPBM, its vice-president Syed Badli Shah Syed Osman said Azmin should not accuse others of immoral conduct as he himself had alleged “moral issues”.

He also asked Inspector-General of Police Abdul Hamid Bador on the latest status of their investigations into the gay sex video allegedly involving Azmin.

“A year has passed. Have the police still failed to find any evidence to confirm the identity of the person in the video? I urge the authorities to announce the case’s status and not to be one-sided in protecting certain influential individuals,” he said in a statement.
