This young ER doctor had to tell Covid-19 patients when it was time to say goodbye to their families. Then the virus knocked him down
Grand Rapids, Michigan (CNN)When coronavirus first hit in March, Dr. David Burkard found himself having some of the toughest conversations of his life.
He had to let patients know when it was time to say their final goodbyes to their families.
"The hard thing is having to be the person that talks to the patient with Covid, who says, 'You know what? It's time to call your wife. We are going to have to put a breathing tube down and it's time for you to say goodbye,'" Burkard said.
It was a message the emergency room physician had to deliver again and again as the pandemic stretched through summer and into the shorter days of fall.
Burkard, 28 and in his third year of residency at Spectrum Health Systems in Grand Rapids, Michigan, did what he needed to do to keep himself safe. He wore protective equipment at work, a mask on his own time and kept socially distant, he says.

Covid vaccine front-runners: How much they cost, who’s bought them and how they’re stored - Two Covid-19 vaccines have been found to be highly effective in late-stage trials in recent days, boosting optimism at a time when health systems in Europe and the U.S. are once again being pushed to breaking point.
- Huge challenges remain before a vaccine can be rolled out, however.
- The global battle to secure prospective supplies has raised alarm about equitable access, while questions remain over logistics, distribution, and, perhaps most significantly, cost.

KUALA LUMPUR: Barisan Nasional MP Shahidan Kassim today told former prime minister Najib Razak that anyone who rejects the 2021 Supply Bill covering next year’s budget is a “traitor”.
“Anyone who objects to the budget, including my friend Pekan (Pekan MP Najib), is a traitor to the rakyat as the people are waiting for it to be approved,” Shahidan (BN-Arau) said during the debate on the bill at the Dewan Rakyat today.
He said those who had lost jobs are waiting for the budget to be approved so they will get assistance.
“If we reject the budget, we are being unfair to them,” he added.

PETALING JAYA: Amanah leader Khalid Samad said there are no rifts among members of the party, as all Amanah MPs have signed a statutory declaration (SD) in support of Anwar Ibrahim as prime minister.
The Amanah communications director was responding to a FMT report saying there was growing tension in the party between those supporting Dr Mahathir Mohamad and those who back Anwar to lead the country.
A party insider had told FMT that Amanah’s grassroots were torn at times between their leaders who have different preferences for a national leader.
“The report that Amanah is divided is not accurate and should be corrected,” Khalid said at a press conference at the Dewan Rakyat today.

TikTok - One of the world’s fastest-growing apps |

One of the world’s fastest-growing apps, TikTok could usher in an era where Asia – not Silicon Valley – leads the tech industry. That change could be transformative.
For more than 30 years, a small parcel of land covering about 45 square miles (116sqkm) has had an outsized impact on the way we work, live and play.
California’s Silicon Valley shapes our lives. From the websites where we do our household shopping to the video-streaming services we watch to the companies which provide our email, almost all are based in this corner of the United States.
Until recently, that is. The rise of TikTok, an app whose parent company is the Chinese firm ByteDance, has struck at the heart of Silicon Valley’s supremacy. Along with other digital products coming out of China, TikTok has the potential to reshape the future of technology – a future in which the culture, and the interests, of Shanghai or Beijing could mould the industry more than that of San Francisco Bay.
It’s hard to overstate just how much of a switch this is.

Bangsa Malaysia only way to unite the ummah, not a ‘grand coalition’ |

Ummah is an Arabic word which means a community. But over time, the word has now become a synonym for the Islamic community in general. In the Malaysian context, it had always referred to the Malay/Muslim community.
As a far as I can remember, Malay-based parties Umno and PAS were always calling for the unity of the ummah, meaning Malays and Muslims. It was accepted that the other races were not in this equation and no one complained.
Similarly, another oft-used phrase by the leaders that had always bothered me was agama, bangsa and negara (religion, race and nation) to marshal all Malaysians. I always wondered if it encompassed all races and religions or was it only used to rally Malays and Muslims.

A Covid-19 vaccine developed in China has shown success in mid-stage trials, researchers say.
There are several vaccines being developed in China, some of which are already being administered.
According to the researchers, the Sinovac Biotech vaccine led to a quick immune response during trials with around 700 people.
The announcement comes after European and US vaccines reported successful data from large late-stage trials.
Three vaccines, developed in the US, Germany and Russia, have all released data suggesting efficiency of more than 90%, after trials with tens of thousands of people.

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 18 — The courts should reject any requests to file suits challenging the Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s emergency declaration powers, Umno’s Padang Rengas MP Datuk Seri Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz said.
Referring to the Federal Constitution, under Article 158, Nazri said in the event that the Agong’s satisfaction — as mentioned in Clauses 1 and 2(B) — is final and conclusive, it cannot be challenged in any court for any reason.
“So the courts should straightaway reject any request challenging the Agong’s satisfaction.
“(Courts) should reject from the get-go rather than stay silent, as it will create uncertainty because people will be kept wondering, since there isn’t any finality in the matter,” he said during his debate on the Budget 2021 Bill in Parliament today.

There are many health benefits of copper. It is an essential element for bone strength, heart health, immune health and much more.
Copper deficiency can lead to iron deficiency and problems with nervous and immune system functions. Too much or too little copper can affect how brain functions work and have been linked to neurological diseases and Wilson’s disease (a condition in which too much copper forms in the organs).
Health Benefits
Copper plays an important role in maintaining a healthy body and has a variety of health benefits.
Anti-Inflammatory Properties
Studies on animals have suggested that maintaining copper levels in the body may delay or even prevent arthritis. This is why some people wear copper gloves, bracelets, and other accessories made of copper. However, studies conducted in volunteers with arthritis have shown no benefit from wearing copper jewelry.
Antioxidant Properties
Research studies have found that copper has antioxidant properties. Since copper contains antioxidants, it may reduce the production of free radicals. Free radicals are known for damaging cells and causing diseases, especially cancer.
