KUALA LUMPUR: Facing the prospect of being declared a bankrupt, women, family and community development minister Rina Harun has settled her multimillion-ringgit debts to a Paris-based film and television programme production company.

Lawyer Mark Ho Hing Kheong, who represented Sarl Novovision, said the exact outstanding amount, which he declined to disclose, was paid last week.

“We received a cheque on Wednesday and it was cleared the following day,” he told FMT when contacted.

A statement of claim against Rina was filed on Nov 8, 2018 by the French firm and that the full amount must be paid by July 31, 2019.

Karangkraf founder starts Rasuah Busters campaign to rope in community to fight corruption

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 15 — Hoping to involve all levels of society, the chairman of Karangkraf Media Group Datuk Hussamuddin Yaacub has started an anti-corruption campaign called Rasuah Busters and is encouraging all Malaysians to participate in it.

In a statement today, he said the campaign aims to tackle all manner of corruption from bribery, extortion, cronyism, nepotism, patronage, influence peddling to graft and embezzlement.

“When there is dishonesty and corruption anywhere in our nation, everyone loses and Malaysians do not want to put up with it any more. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!

“We want modern services and a better standard of living; we want up-to-date medical facilities at par with the world’s best, available to every Malaysian. We desire strong and efficient infrastructure and support systems for a superior quality of life.

“But corruption is taking these away from us!” Hussamuddin said in the statement.

He said the campaign will be based on the Rukunegara the Federal Constitution and the shared religious and traditional values.

As an example, he said to always use mercy, compassion and not be judgmental in presuming guilt before it is proven in court.

To start a Rasuah Buster team, Hussamuddin said participants just need to form a group, come up with name, and register it with the hashtag #RasuahBuster on https://bit.ly/3ctmxSy and the www.rasuahbusters.com website as well as social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.

For more information about the campaign, just email: rasuahbusters@gmail.com. Participants keen to join as a volunteer, can WhatsApp 019-3823635 while those who wish to file a legitimate complaint can do WhatsApp 019-6680920.

Trump impeachment trial: What verdict means for Trump, Biden and America
Posted by: superadmin - 02-14-2021, 03:08 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

Only five days after it began, Donald Trump's Senate impeachment trial has concluded. As was widely predicted, the final verdict was that the former president was not guilty of inciting an insurrection at the US Capitol last month.

There have now been four presidential impeachment trials in US history, and this one was by far the shortest.

What it lacked in duration, however, it will make up in consequence. A precedent - a former president standing trial - was set. Reputations were burnished and tarnished. And a tumultuous stage was set for political battles to come.

Here's a look at some of the key players, and how they emerged from this moment in US history.

Donald Trump

New trial, same outcome.

Trump once again avoided conviction by the US Senate because his fellow Republicans, by and large, stuck by his side. The final tally was 57-43, which left the prosecution 10 short of the two-thirds majority required.

That, at its most basic level, is a win for the former president. He is still eligible to run for president again in 2024, if he so chooses. His base, by all indications, is still largely intact. Both in the House of Representatives and in the Senate, most Republican officeholders opposed the impeachment proceedings - and those who broke ranks are already facing ferocious criticism and, in some cases, formal reprimands from their Republican constituents.

  Valentine (Official) ft. Martina McBride

Valentine (Official) ft. Martina McBride
If there were no words
No way to speak
I would still hear you
If there were no tears
No way to feel inside
I'd still feel for you
And even if the sun refused to shine
Even if romance ran out of rhyme
You would still have my heart
Until the end of time
You're all I need, my love, my Valentine

All of my life
I have been waiting for
All you give to me
You've opened my eyes
And shown me how to love unselfishly
I've dreamed of this a thousand times before
But in my dreams I couldn't love you more
I will give you my heart
Until the end of time
You're all I need, my love, my Valentine

Trump-McCarthy shouting match show Trump refused to call off the rioters

New details about Trump-McCarthy shouting match show Trump refused to call off the rioters

Washington (CNN)In an expletive-laced phone call with House Republican leader Kevin McCarthy while the Capitol was under attack, then-President Donald Trump said the rioters cared more about the election results than McCarthy did.

"Well, Kevin, I guess these people are more upset about the election than you are," Trump said, according to lawmakers who were briefed on the call afterward by McCarthy.

McCarthy insisted that the rioters were Trump's supporters and begged Trump to call them off.

Trump's comment set off what Republican lawmakers familiar with the call described as a shouting match between the two men. A furious McCarthy told the then-President the rioters were breaking into his office through the windows, and asked Trump, "Who the f--k do you think you are talking to?" according to a Republican lawmaker familiar with the call.

The newly revealed details of the call, described to CNN by multiple Republicans briefed on it, provide critical insight into the President's state of mind as rioters were overrunning the Capitol. The existence of the call and some of its details were first reported by Punchbowl News and discussed publicly by McCarthy.

The house that Chan Wing built – for the Kings
Posted by: superadmin - 02-13-2021, 10:30 AM - Forum: General Discussion - No Replies

KUALA LUMPUR: Most of us know of Yap Ah Loy, the man who helped found Kuala Lumpur and (Wong) Loke Yew, who helped develop the city in infancy. But what about Chan Wing?

Chan Wing was Loke Yew’s employee and founder of the Kwong Yik Bank. But he may well have become a forgotten man but for the house he built.

His was a typical rags to riches story. Born to a poor family in 1873, he was the fourth child among six boys and two girls who were raised by their mother.

Schooling was a luxury that they could not afford. At 14, he was sent to Malaya where he worked as a shopkeeper for Loke Yew in Sungai Besi.

After 10 years, he and four others formed a ‘kongsi’ (syndicate) to mine tin ore in the Sungai Besi mine where he finally, after more than nine months, managed to spot some darkish patch in one of the boxes of sand that he was washing.

The rest was history, says royal museum director Miti Fateema Sherzeella Mohd Yusoff.

[Image: Royal-Museum-building-Royal-museum-KL-080819-01.jpg]

Chan Wing was a man who liked his women. He had eight or nine wives with 26 children living at different locations and he decided to place them all under one roof.

Huawei takes HSBC to court as it tries to stop extradition
Posted by: superadmin - 02-12-2021, 01:44 PM - Forum: Business, Economy and Investment - No Replies

The Chinese telecoms giant Huawei is taking the bank HSBC to court in the UK as part of its attempt to prevent the extradition of its chief financial officer from Canada to the US.

Meng Wanzhou was arrested in Canada on a US request over claims she misled HSBC in a 2013 meeting.

Huawei now hopes to gain access to HSBC documents that could help it undermine the US case for her extradition.

The bank told the BBC the application for disclosure was "without merit".

The move comes amid political pressure on HSBC, which is UK based but was founded in Hong Kong where it makes much of its profits.

The court hearing in London on Friday draws the bank deeper into a legal battle which has raised tensions between Canada and China.

Meng Wanzhou, who is the daughter of Huawei's founder, was arrested at Vancouver airport on 1 December 2018 because the US wants her to stand trial on charges including fraud. These are linked to the alleged violation of US sanctions against Iran, allegations she denies.
