KUALA LUMPUR: PKR president Anwar Ibrahim has dodged criticism from Dr Mahathir Mohamad, saying he does not want to get into a fight with the former prime minister.
This comes after the Langkawi MP slammed Anwar for being untrustworthy over unfulfilled promises, after the PKR president’s claim to have the numbers to form a new government in September last year led to nothing.
During a press conference today, Anwar kept the door open to working with Mahathir again to topple the Perikatan Nasional (PN) government, saying Pakatan Harapan (PH) will not base its cooperation with other MPs on parties or individuals but on principles.
When asked about the criticism levelled against him by Mahathir, he declined comment.

(REMBAU, Jan 3 — Umno aims to contest in not less than 96 parliamentary seats in the 15th General Election (GE15) after taking into account negotiations with component parties in Barisan Nasional (BN), PAS and Bersatu.
Umno Deputy President Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan said based on the initial formula of the negotiations, Umno would also continue to hold on to the 55 seats won in the GE14.
“We want to retain and contest in the seats we won. We also want to contest in the seats where we were number two (second highest votes at GE14).
“We also find that there are seats our BN colleagues never won, because voters there want a Malay candidate, for example.

In blogpost, Liew Chin Tong compares and contrasts the leadership structures of DAP and Umno
KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 3 — Unlike Umno, DAP’s leadership structure is more democratic and has far more checks and balances, said DAP Johor chief Liew Chin Tong.
In a blog post today, Liew explained how the party’s central executive committee (CEC), secretary-general and its chairman are elected.
He added that while the secretary-general post presides over the party’s operations, the office bearer is still answerable to the CEC and the party’s chairman.
“I am often asked why is DAP’s ‘president’ not elected directly by delegates? For a start, DAP has no president. Following the tradition of left-wing parties, DAP’s No. 1 leader is the secretary-general.

Beijing says it will take ‘necessary measures’ in response to NYSE delisting of 3 Chinese companies - China vowed on Saturday to respond to the delisting of three telecommunications giants by the New York Stock Exchange under an executive order signed by President Donald Trump in November.
- The ministry of commerce said in a statement that China will “take necessary measures to resolutely safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese enterprises,” according to the state-run Global Times.

Appeals court dismisses Gohmert case asking Pence to interfere in Electoral College vote count
(CNN)A federal court on Saturday dismissed an appeal from Texas Rep. Louie Gohmert in his lawsuit to force Vice President Mike Pence to interfere in the Electoral College vote count.
The Saturday decision by the 5th US Circuit Court of Appeals came just hours after the Republican congressman filed his appeal of an earlier loss.
On Friday, a district court threw out Gohmert's and several Arizona Republicans' lawsuit seeking to force Pence to help throw the election to President Donald Trump next week when Congress meets to count the Electoral College votes. Saturday's ruling affirmed the previous decision.
"We need say no more, and we affirm the judgment essentially for the reasons stated by the district court. We express no view on the underlying merits or on what putative party, if any, might have standing. The motion to expedite is dismissed as moot. The mandate shall issue forthwith," read the ruling.
CNN has reached out to Gohmert for comment on the Saturday ruling.
Gohmert's suit was part of the desperate and extraordinary GOP attempt to overturn the presidential election using baseless and unproven allegations of mass voter fraud and charging that multiple states that President-elect Joe Biden won illegally changed their voting rules due to the pandemic.
Gohmert and a slate of would-be Trump electors from Arizona had said only Pence could decide what electoral votes count -- a remarkable argument suggesting vice presidents can directly determine who wins a presidential election, regardless of the results.

(CNN)On the first day of 2021, President Donald Trump signaled the war to come within the Republican Party.
"I hope to see the great Governor of South Dakota @KristiNoem run against RINO @SenJohnThune in the upcoming 2022 Primary," he tweeted. "She would do a fantastic job in the U.S. Senate, but if not Kristi, others are already lining up. South Dakota wants strong leadership, NOW!"
What offense had Thune, the No. 2 Republican in the Senate, committed? Certainly not breaking with Trump's agenda over the past four years -- as the South Dakota senator voted with the President 93.6% of the time, according to calculations made by 538. (That was the same score as Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.)
No, what Thune "did' to Trump is publicly acknowledge that Joe Biden won the 2020 election. "I understand there are people who feel strongly about the outcome of this election, but in the end, at some point, you have to face the music," Thune told the New York Times last month.

PETALING JAYA: Pulai Umno became the first division in the country to pass a resolution asking party leaders to quit the Perikatan Nasional (PN) government immediately to force a general election.
Its head Nur Jazlan Mohamed, who confirmed this to FMT, said the delegates at the annual general meeting on Friday had unanimously decided that it would be in the best interest of Umno and its reputation to leave the ruling coalition before the party is also blamed for the failure of PN to govern properly.
In a strongly-worded resolution which was sighted by FMT, the division described the coalition’s top leaders as untrustworthy and who have no qualms about ditching their allies for power.
“These senior PN leaders were the same ones who worked with Pakatan Harapan (PH) to bring down the Umno-led Barisan Nasional in the 14th General Election (GE14).

Federal judge throws out Gohmert lawsuit asking Pence to interfere in Electoral College count
(CNN)A federal judge has thrown out a lawsuit from Rep. Louie Gohmert of Texas and several Arizona Republicans seeking to force Vice President Mike Pence to help throw the election to President Donald Trump next week when Congress meets to count the Electoral College votes.
Judge Jeremy Kernodle of the Eastern District of Texas said on Friday that Gohmert and the others lacked standing to sue.
Gohmert's suit was part of the desperate and extraordinary GOP attempt to overturn the presidential election using baseless and unproven allegations of mass voter fraud and charging that multiple states that President-elect Joe Biden won illegally changed their voting rules due to the pandemic. Those arguments have failed dozens of times in state and federal courts over the past two months.
Gohmert and a slate of would-be Trump electors from Arizona had said only Pence could decide what electoral votes count -- a remarkable argument suggesting vice presidents can directly determine who wins a presidential election, regardless of the results.

Stop attacking Anwar and focus on Opposition ‘grand coalition’, Amanah Youth tells Dr Mahathir
KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 1 — Amanah Youth chief Shazni Munir Mohd Ithnin has demanded Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad today to stop attacking Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
Instead, the wing added that both the Parti Pejuang Tanah Air chairman and Anwar have to focus on strengthening the opposition, in order to make a “grand coalition” a reality.
“Amanah Youth would like to criticise the attitude of Dr Mahathir who repeatedly attacked Anwar, which was seen as only aggravating the situation.
“Realising the ‘grand coalition’ requires the agreement of all the Opposition leaders and peace between the two great figures Dr Mahathir and Anwar, for them to sit at the same table and negotiate,” he said in a statement.

PETALING JAYA: Pakatan Harapan should “move on” from any plan to work with Dr Mahathir Mohamad following the former prime minister’s latest attack on Anwar Ibrahim, says PKR Youth.
The wing’s chief, Akmal Nasir said PH must realise that Mahathir was merely riding on the “grand coalition” idea to divide and conquer, a strategy he has employed many times in the past.
“It will not make any sense to allow this outdated strategy to break the unity and alliance of PKR and its partners in Pakatan Harapan,” he said in a statement.
Mahathir had slammed PKR president Anwar yesterday, calling him untrustworthy over unfulfilled promises, particularly his claim of having a strong and formidable majority to topple the Perikatan Nasional government.
