Malay politics at its ‘dirtiest and most divided’ |

Syed Farid Alatas
Farid, a professor at the National University of Singapore, said Malays have for years been hearing their leaders speak up for race and religion, but “now they know it is difficult to trust politicians”.
“The politicians are not speaking for the good of the rakyat (but for themselves). This is a rude awakening for them,” he told FMT.
PETALING JAYA: Malay politics is at its most divided and dirtiest in decades and there is no leader who can unite them for now, says sociologist Syed Farid Alatas.
Instead, he said, the push for integrity has to come from the rakyat themselves.
Farid also disagreed with Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s claim that he would be able to attract Malay support for Pakatan Harapan in the coming general election, stating that Mahathir may have lost the opportunity to unite the Malays after the collapse of his administration after just 22 months in February.
“Mahathir played an important role in GE14, but only as the unifying factor to raise the consciousness on 1MDB. That is no longer salient, ” he said.

Mahathir is wrong about DAP's success |

MP SPEAKS | In his interview with China Press, former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad said: “I had helped the opposition to win (in the 2018 general election) because I brought in Malay support. You know DAP, which could never get more than 18 seats, (it) got 42 seats because of the Malay support I brought in.”
Mahathir was wrong when he said that without his help, DAP could not get more than 18 seats as DAP won 24 parliamentary seats in 1986, 20 seats in 1990, 28 seats in 2008 and 38 seats in 2013 before winning 42 parliamentary seats in 2018.
Although the DAP had been demonised by lies, falsehoods and fake news as anti-Malay, anti-Islam and anti-Malay rulers for the past five decades, the DAP had right from its formation in 1966 been committed to a multi-racial, multi-lingual, multi-religious and multi-cultural Malaysian objective and had never been against any race, religion or the monarchical system in Malaysia.
We want every person in Malaysia, whether Malay, Chinese, Indian, Kadazan or Iban to have a Malaysian consciousness, identity and objective.

PETALING JAYA: Former federal minister Zaid Ibrahim has warned that Indonesia and Vietnam will overtake Malaysia economically unless people speak up so that leaders change their ways.
Saying Malay leaders continued to divide Malaysians through race and religion just to win elections while fearing liberals, intellectuals and meritocracy, Zaid called for the holding of a congress on the economy with participation from various parties and groups to begin a shift in thinking.

KUALA LUMPUR: Umno Youth today lodged a police report against former Bank Negara Malaysia governor Zeti Akhtar Aziz and her family over their alleged involvement in the 1MDB scandal.
Executive committee member Shahrul Nasrun Kamaruddin said it was for the authorities to open investigations and provide a detailed report on the allegations.
This comes after a blogpost claimed that members of Zeti’s family had received over RM100 million from fugitive businessman Low Taek Jho, better known as Jho Low, which included 1MDB funds.
“I hope the police and the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission can prioritise (this issue) and investigate all allegations in the article,” Shahrul said outside the Dang Wangi police headquarters.

On Guan Eng, Syed Saddiq and the need for new leaders |

It was touching to read a posting by Lim Guan Eng about a handwritten note from the young MP Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman to mark his 60th birthday last week.
In a frank and personal note, Syed Saddiq wrote that he had once thought that Guan Eng was “the embodiment of evil”, after years of indoctrination and misshapen views about the Lim family.
I have met Guan Eng a few times, in Penang and Kota Kinabalu. He is like a bespectacled nerd, with old-fashioned greasy hair combed backwards like John Travolta. His father, Kit Siang, has the same hairstyle. I did not see any horns, fangs or tail on him.

No more Merry Christmas? Really, Jakim? |

IN a move that shocked Malaysians, Jakim Deputy Director-General (Operations) Abdul Aziz Jusoh recently released a statement claiming that halal-certified businesses should not display their products if it had a non-Islamic festival greeting.
This is surprising even for Jakim. Does Jakim really need to put up more red tape for small businesses during an economic recession? How can a simple “Merry Christmas” or “Happy Deepavali” have the power to revoke your halal certified status?
To comprehend this better, perhaps we need to dive deeper into what the halal certification actually means. Halal is an Arabic word that means permissible. A halal-certified product means that the product is acceptable for consumption in accordance with Islamic law.
The halal certification goes beyond the issues of just pork and alcohol, it also encompasses other areas of food preparation such as slaughtering, cleanliness and safety. When a Muslim shopper enters your store, they can feel safe knowing that the product they want to buy has met the stringent needs of being halal-certified.

KUALA LUMPUR: Senior minister Mohamed Azmin Ali was not represented by any lawyer during case management today of a suit filed by 10 Gombak voters against their MP for alleged deceit and breach of fiduciary duty.
Lawyer Yohendra Nadarajan, who represented the voters during the case management held online, said deputy registrar Maslinda Selamat asked him to file an affidavit of service to show proof the legal papers had been served on Azmin.
Maslinda fixed another case management on Jan 14.
“I had expected a lawyer (for Azmin) to be present since the papers were served on Azmin on Dec 1,” Yohendra said.
