Taliban ask to speak at UN General Assembly in New York |

The Taliban have asked to address world leaders at the United Nations General Assembly this week in New York City.
The group's foreign minister made the request in a letter on Monday. A UN committee will rule on the request.
The Taliban also nominated their Doha-based spokesperson, Suhail Shaheen, as Afghanistan's UN ambassador.
The group, which seized control of Afghanistan last month, said the envoy for the ousted government no longer represented the country.
The request to participate in the high-level debate is being considered by a credentials committee, whose nine members include the US, China and Russia, according to a UN spokesperson.
But they are unlikely to meet before the end of the General Assembly session next Monday. Until then, under UN rules, Ghulam Isaczai will remain Afghanistan's ambassador to the global body.
He is expected to make a speech on the final day of the meeting on 27 September. However the Taliban said his mission "no longer represents Afghanistan".
They also said that several countries no longer recognised former President Ashraf Ghani as leader.
Mr Ghani abruptly left Afghanistan as Taliban militants advanced on the capital, Kabul, on 15 August. He has since taken refuge in the United Arab Emirates.

New bombshells show Trump's coup threat was real and hasn't passed |

(CNN)A rush of new and shocking behind-the-scenes disclosures about how then-President Donald Trump sought to thwart the Constitution and the will of voters makes a clear case that America came closer to a coup earlier this year than previously known.

The fresh evidence also shows what many people in Trump's inner circle knew in January: His case to stay in power was meritless, but an unchained commander in chief chose to listen to acolytes pushing wild conspiracies. Some of those who knew the truth refused to speak up, even as American democracy came under attack.
Just this week, it's been revealed that:
- Trump had blueprints that the Republicans tried to use to prevent Congress from certifying President Joe Biden's clear and genuine victory, in the form of a memo that laid out a plan for then-Vice President Mike Pence to thwart Biden's Electoral College triumph. The memo was reported in the new book "Peril," by Washington Post reporters Bob Woodward and Robert Costa, and was later obtained by CNN.
- Trump's own campaign staff knew that outlandish claims of fraud made by the then-President's lawyers were utterly false, according to a report in The New York Times. But they did nothing to stop his dangerous allegations.
- Trump sent a letter full of false information to Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, asking him to start the process of decertifying the 2020 election.
- "Peril" also contains a passage that shows Trump cared little for truth, what voters decided in November or bedrock constitutional values -- but agonized about his reputation and mused that accepting defeat would brand him as one of history's losers.
This growing paper trail, which is likely to be of intense interest to the House select committee investigating the January 6 insurrection, appears to prove Trump's intent to stay in power illegally. The record is beginning to add up to an extraordinary indictment of the ex-President's abuses of power and one of the darkest moments in US history.

BEIJING – Embattled Chinese housing giant Evergrande today said it has agreed to a deal with domestic bondholders that should allow the conglomerate to avoid defaulting on one of its interest payments.
Financial markets have tumbled over fears that the Chinese group could collapse, with the potential to derail the world’s second-biggest economy.
In a statement to the Shenzhen stock exchange, Evergrande’s property unit Hengda said it has negotiated a plan to pay interest due on its 2025 bond, which Bloomberg calculated is worth 232 million yuan (RM150 million).
There was no mention of its repayments on interest for an offshore bond.
In the statement, Hengda said investors “who bought and held the bonds” before today “are entitled to interest paid this time”.
While predominantly a developer, Evergrande – which employs 200,000 people, has a presence in more than 280 cities and claims to indirectly generate 3.8 million Chinese jobs – has been on a buying spree for more than a decade.
But, the group has admitted to facing “unprecedented challenges” as it tackles a debt pile of more than US$300 billion (RM1.25 trillion).
In a report issued earlier this week, the S&P ratings agency said it believes authorities in Beijing will intervene if they consider any large-scale fallout is likely to materialise. – AFP, September 22, 2021

PETALING JAYA: Umno veteran Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah has resigned from his post as chairman of the party’s advisory council.
In a letter to party president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi dated Sept 20 that was sighted by FMT, he expressed his disappointment that nearly all of the Cabinet posts under the new Ismail Sabri Yaakob administration were filled by those from the previous “failed government” despite concerns among the public and grassroots.
The Gua Musang MP, who is more popularly known as Ku Li, thanked the party for giving him the opportunity to play a role in Umno’s journey.
The resignation letter was confirmed to be authentic by a source close to the matter.
“Can they help our party avenge our (2018) defeat in the 15th general election (GE15) and end the hung parliament? Can we rely on them to bring our party victory in GE15?” he asked alluding to Umno’s allies in the current government, namely Bersatu and PAS.

Covid-19: After losing both parents to coronavirus, many such orphans in Malaysia may also lose their future
KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 22 — Unlike your average 16-year-old, Mohamad Faiz Yusni hardly smiles and when he does, it is clearly forced.
Dressed in an old T-shirt and black pants, he looked down often during the meeting with Malay Mail at his grandparents’ home in Gombak.
But when you realise Mohamad Faiz and his three other siblings lost both parents to Covid-19 within a week of each other you can understand why.
And as if that was not sad enough, they lost their grandmother a week later.

Who really is Shafie and why does he oppose that MoU? – P. Gunasegaram |

ARE those the values in our lives, Warisan chief Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal questioned.
The root cause was instability, he said a moment earlier. We are playing with numbers for human life, he went on.
Shafie was speaking in Parliament recently criticising Pakatan Harapan’s (PH) signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the government for reforms, which include lowering the voting age to 18, limiting the prime minister to two terms, introducing anti-party-hopping laws, and plans to control Covid-19 and revive the economy.
While he went on to talk about unrelated things, he did not make it clear why he was opposed to the MoU. Opposition leaders have repeatedly pointed out the MoU does not take the right away from opposition members to take a position against the government, but works with them where it is beneficial for the country.
His opposition to the MoU seems based solely on an objection to working with people who stole the mandate from the PH coalition, including Warisan, which backed the coalition post-2018 elections.
Shafie is now making this MoU a major issue to push ahead with his agenda of making himself a potential future leader, saying anti-party-hopping laws are unnecessary if politicians have values.
But it is precisely because politicians, including the likes of Shafie, do not have values that such laws are necessary. What are Shafie’s values with respect to some of these?

ALOR SETAR: Kedah Menteri Besar Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor dropped a bombshell today when he claimed that his predecessor had transferred RM13 million of Kedah Menteri Besar Inc funds to an offshore account.
Speaking to members of the media after today’s Kedah state assembly session, Sanusi said that the money was transferred to an account in Canada when Mukhriz Mahathir, the Jitra assemblyman, was menteri besar.
Sanusi made the revelation after he claimed that Mukhriz had brought up old issues in the assembly.
“I have never told anyone about this (RM13 million) … only today I am revealing. That is an old issue, which I have never raised before. I’m still keeping the transfer slip,” he said.
FMT has reached out to Mukhriz and MBI Kedah for comments.

- Evergrande is due to pay out interest worth $83 million on a 5-year, U.S.-dollar denominated bond, with an initial issue size of around $2 billion. Another interest payment on a 7-year dollar bond is due next Wednesday, on Sept. 29.
- Analysts and market watchers largely expect that Evergrande to miss the interest payment on Thursday.
- If these initial defaults happen, institutional and other foreign investors will likely be more affected compared to domestic investors in China, analysts say.
The first test for Evergrande’s debt crisis comes this week — investors will be watching to see if the embattled Chinese property developer is able to pay out its interest due on a bond, or default on it.
The firm is due to pay interest worth $83 million on Thursday, according to data from S&P Global Ratings.
Evergrande’s 5-year, U.S.-dollar denominated bond, had an initial issue size of around $2 billion, according to market data provider Refinitiv Eikon – although the price has plummeted now.
