PETALING JAYA: Johor’s Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar today urged the government to abort its plans to appeal the recent High Court decision allowing citizenship rights to children born overseas, regardless of whether the Malaysian parent is the father or mother.
Sultan Ibrahim said all children born to Malaysian parents abroad must be accorded the right to citizenship in this country.
“The sanctity of the courts must be upheld. Why discriminate against Malaysian mothers with overseas-born children?
“This is a basic right of every child, irrespective of whether the Malaysian parent is the father or mother.
“It doesn’t feel right that Malaysian fathers and mothers are viewed differently in the eyes of the law concerning their child’s citizenship.

China’s returning “space heroes” emerged from their capsule and waved to the waiting cameras after their successful re-entry on Friday after 90 days working aboard the country’s Tiangong space station.
Speaking to a CCTV journalist at the landing site, Commander Nie Haisheng said he believed there would be more Chinese astronauts to follow their achievements, who would “set new records and reach new heights” in space travel.
The three astronauts who spent a record three months on China’s Tiangong space station landed safely on Friday, completing a journey that set a milestone in the country’s ambitious space programme. “We all feel great,” Nie told the Beijing command centre before leaving the capsule.

COPENHAGEN – The Faroe Islands, an autonomous territory of Denmark, said yesterday it will take another look at the practice of dolphin hunting after the slaughter of more than 1,400 of the mammals earlier this week sparked an outcry.
“The government has decided to start an evaluation of the regulations on the catching of Atlantic white-sided dolphins,” Prime Minister Bardur a Steig Nielsen said in a statement.
“Although these hunts are considered sustainable, we will be looking closely at the dolphin hunts, and what part they should play in Faroese society.”
The comments come in the wake of an outcry over the culling of more than 1,400 dolphins on Sunday, in what was said to be the single biggest hunt in the North Atlantic islands.
Traditionally, the Faroe Islands – which has a population of around 50,000 – hunt pilot whales in a practice known as “grindadrap”, whereby hunters first surround the whales with a wide semi-circle of fishing boats and then drive them into a bay to be beached and slaughtered.
Normally, around 600 pilot whales are hunted every year in this way.
But photos showing more than 1,420 Atlantic white-sided dolphins in a fjord near Skala in the centre of the islands on Sunday sparked outrage on social media.

Veteran fishermen plead for Penang three-island reclamation project to be approved for the sake of future generations
GEORGE TOWN, Sept 17 — There are about 700 fishermen and residents in Permatang Damar Laut who are fully supportive of the controversial three-island reclamation project off the southern coast of Penang island, according to some veteran fishermen there.
One of them is Fajinah Jaafar, 60, who has been fishing off the coast of Permatang Damar Laut for over 40 years.
The single mother has relied on fishing as her main source of income to raise her two sons for decades and she fully believes that the proposed reclamation project will be beneficial for fishermen and residents in the area.

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — Friction between pragmatists and ideologues in the Taliban leadership has intensified since the group formed a hard-line Cabinet last week that is more in line with their harsh rule in the 1990s than their recent promises of inclusiveness, said two Afghans familiar with the power struggle.
The wrangling has taken place behind the scenes, but rumors quickly began circulating about a recent violent confrontation between the two camps at the presidential palace, including claims that the leader of the pragmatic faction, Abdul Ghani Baradar, was killed.
The rumors reached such intensity that an audio recording and handwritten statement, both purportedly by Baradar himself, denied that he had been killed. Then on Wednesday, Baradar appeared in an interview with the country’s national TV.

Europe’s energy crisis is making the market nervous. And analysts expect record-high prices to persist
- European power prices have spiraled to multi-year highs on a variety of factors in recent weeks, ranging from extremely strong commodity and carbon prices to low wind output.
- What’s more, the record run in energy prices is not expected to end any time soon, with energy analysts warning market nervousness is likely to persist throughout winter.
- Europe’s energy supply crunch is “making the market nervous as we approach winter,” Stefan Konstantinov, senior analyst at ICIS Energy, a commodity intelligence service, told CNBC.
LONDON — European power prices have spiraled to multi-year highs on a variety of factors in recent weeks, ranging from extremely strong commodity and carbon prices to low wind output.
What’s more, the record run in energy prices is not expected to end any time soon, with energy analysts warning market nervousness is likely to persist throughout winter.
The October gas price at the Dutch TTF hub, a European benchmark, was seen to climb to a record high of 79 euros ($93.31) a megawatt-hour on Wednesday. The contract has risen more than 250% since January, according to Reuters, while benchmark power contracts in France and Germany have both doubled.
In the U.K., where electricity bills are now the most expensive in Europe, power prices have soared amid the country’s high dependence on gas and renewables to generate electricity.
British day-ahead electricity prices rose nearly 19% to reach 475 pounds ($656.5) on Wednesday, Reuters reported. The contract was already trading near record highs shortly after a fire at a U.K.-France power link cut electricity imports to Britain.
“By far the biggest factor is gas prices,” Glenn Rickson, head of European power analysis at S&P Global Platts Analytics, told CNBC via email.
