‘Wan Junaidi’s remark on king saying no need for confidence vote won’t hold up in court’
KUALA LUMPUR – Pasir Gudang MP Hassan Abdul Karim has questioned the validity of Law Minister Datuk Seri Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar’s statement that the king has informed Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob that his legitimacy as prime minister need not be tested when the Dewan Rakyat convenes this month.
In a statement today, Hassan said such statements would not be accepted in the courts as they would be deemed hearsay.
“His statement is based on hearsay, because Wan Junaidi did not hear it directly from the Yang di-Pertuan Agong. Instead, he heard it from Ismail Sabri.
“It is a conflict of interest for Ismail Sabri in terms of the confidence vote in the Dewan Rakyat, because it involves support for him to continue as prime minister.”
He said the Agong, in a statement issued by Istana Negara on August 18, stated the need for a confidence vote to take place as soon as possible.

PETALING JAYA: A constitutional expert said it was not for the attorney-general to decide on motions that could be tabled in the Dewan Rakyat, after the latter weighed in on the debate over a confidence motion.
Constitutional law professor Shad Saleem Faruqi said it was within “Parliament’s power and privileges” to introduce a motion.
“MPs may of course introduce any motion, although it may not be allowed by the Speaker. And in the last few years, the Speakers have been quite strict about this.
“So this is not an issue for the attorney-general or for you or me, it is an issue for Parliament,” he said during a webinar titled “To Legitimate or Legislate: The Continuing Parliament Dilemma”.
On Saturday, Attorney-General Idrus Harun said there was no need for Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob to table a confidence vote in the Dewan Rakyat.

From Rahim Zainuddin
On Aug 18, the very next day after Muhyiddin Yassin finally resigned from an office he should never have held, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong issued a public statement that whoever was next appointed prime minister must secure a vote of confidence in the Dewan Rakyat.
With that statement, His Majesty showed a mastery of basic constitutional principles central to our democracy.
The Dewan Rakyat, being the people’s house, is where any candidate hopeful of taking on the mantle of leader of this nation’s administration must submit to public scrutiny. He must prove himself to be worthy of the rakyat’s trust, as signified by a vote by their representatives in the house.

Probe Muhyiddin’s links to 1BestariNet, MP tells MACC |

PETALING JAYA: Klang MP Charles Santiago wants the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to step in and investigate former prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin’s alleged links to YTL Communications Sdn Bhd, particularly with regards to the 1BestariNet project.
The DAP MP’s call comes after Maszlee Malik revealed that during the Pakatan Harapan (PH) administration, Muhyiddin had pushed for the former education minister’s resignation over a contract issue with YTL.
Speaking to FMT, Santiago said the project had already drawn lots of brickbats, with people questioning whether it was helpful and if it had been awarded to the wrong people.
He said Maszlee’s revelations suggested that there were vested interests, adding that Muhyiddin, who was home minister then, should know that he cannot represent businesses or make that a reason to push for his Cabinet colleague’s resignation.
“If Maszlee’s allegations are true, that Muhyiddin pushed (then prime minister Dr) Mahathir (Mohamed) to sack or remove him (Maszlee) as education minister, then it shows a stronger connection between Muhyiddin and YTL.

PUTRAJAYA – Newly minted Law Minister Datuk Seri Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar has made it his personal target to limit the term of the prime minister, introduce an anti-hopping law and implement Undi18, among several reforms he aims to accomplish.
These proposals were part of former prime minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin’s last-ditch efforts to get the support of the opposition during his final days in power.
Speaking at a press conference, Wan Junaidi said the reforms offered by the Pagoh MP will be taken into the current government’s consideration.
“Among the government transformations I am talking about is based on the offer made by Muhyiddin to Pakatan Harapan (PH),” he said today.
“I will study all the proposals he made including, firstly, to limit the prime minister’s tenure, secondly, on anti-hopping laws and thirdly, the implementation of Undi18.”
On August 13, just days before he resigned as prime minister, Muhyiddin had offered a slew of reform pledges to the opposition in exchange for their support if his confidence is tested in Parliament.

PETALING JAYA: DAP is now “openly sceptical” about Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob’s commitment to pursue institutional reforms, says party secretary-general Lim Guan Eng.
In a statement today, he questioned why Ismail “refused” to chair the national recovery council (MPN) as the prime minister, appointing his predecessor Muhyiddin Yassin as chairman instead.
The Bagan MP said Ismail should head the council set up to implement the recovery plan and navigate the nation towards reopening more economic and social sectors.
“Muhyiddin’s appointment as the MPN chairman with ministerial status only demonstrates the new prime minister’s lack of commitment towards the recovery plan to normalise both the economy and the country.
“If Ismail is not even committed to the MPN, how can he generate confidence that he will be committed to institutional reforms, such as (introducing) an anti-hopping law to cut down defections by MPs who betray their electoral mandate?

PETALING JAYA: China could emerge as a major force in the global rubber gloves market and threaten the dominance of Malaysian companies in the long-term, said Kuan Mun Leong, CEO of Hartalega Holdings Bhd, one of Malaysia’s biggest glove producers.
Chinese glove makers are expected to contribute 23% of the total share of the world’s glove supply by next year, from an estimated 16% currently, based on their announced capacity expansion plans, Kuan said today.
Malaysia’s market share is expected to shrink to 60% by next year from 67% currently, he added.
The Chinese companies have been meeting rising demand from the US and Europe amid production disruptions caused by a flare-up of the Covid-19 pandemic in Malaysia, the world’s largest rubber glove supplier.

Teenager with muscular dystrophy aims to become China’s Stephen Hawking after acceptance into prestigious university
- Born with congenital muscular dystrophy, Xing Yifan weighs just 18kg and can barely move without help
- Despite the challenge of his disease he has worked hard with the help of his parents and gained entrance to Beihang University
An 18-year-old with congenital muscular dystrophy who aspires to become China’s Stephen Hawking has become a celebrity after being accepted by the country’s leading university in astronautics.
Xing Yifan, who was diagnosed with muscular dystrophy when only six months old, started studying in Beihang University last week in the company of his mother, China Youth Daily reported over the weekend.
“I want to see how far I can go. I want to run forward a little more,” he was quoted as saying.
His mother once asked him to change to a less competitive class when in high school. He answered: “If I made it to this class, then I can finish it. I see no reason to quit.”

AG’s stand on scrapping confidence vote ‘baffling’: Anwar |

KUALA LUMPUR – Opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has expressed his bewilderment that Attorney-General Tan Sri Idrus Harun would recommend that the Dewan Rakyat not hold a confidence vote for the prime minister, given that the Yang di-Pertuan Agong advocated for it.
The PKR president said he finds it “baffling” that Idrus is against holding the vote as he appeared to have agreed with Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah in prior meetings with political leaders.
“The Agong had insisted that all leaders must have the togetherness although the ‘winner’ (for the prime minister post) would have a slim majority, and everyone agreed.
“Secondly, the Agong said the leaders must give cooperation and hold a confidence vote. The deputy Agong Tuanku (Sultan) Nazrin (Muizzuddin Shah) – in supporting the views of the Agong – said this must be the prime agenda and everyone agreed.”
Anwar said in a video posted on his Facebook page yesterday evening in which he appeared in a special interview with veteran actor and producer Datuk Afdlin Shauki Aksan, who joined PKR in April.
