Speaking to the press outside the PN headquarters in Publika, Faizal said this is because the majority of MPs who support Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob are from PN while Umno’s Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition has 41 MPs. “This is still a PN government. All evidence to date – within Asean and internationally – shows that multiple language fluency in whichever country in the world is an asset not only to the individual, but to the business organisation as well as the nation that encourages it. We are fortunate in that not only do we have a multilingual population. We also have the building blocks for a bilingual and even trilingual population in our national schooling system. Our national education objective should be to ensure every Malaysian child receives the right educational resources and a fair share of opportunities from cradle to career. This is especially necessary if we are to cope with international competition in an increasingly globalised world. Diversity and mastering more languages should be a key policy priority. Our government should view vernacular schools using different languages as a socio-economic resource for national development. Oh Ei Sun of the Singapore Institute of International Affairs and Ahmad Fauzi Hamid of Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) said a smaller Cabinet would be vital in inspiring confidence in the government. The previous Cabinet under the Muhyiddin Yassin administration comprised 32 ministers and 38 deputy ministers. Ismail, who took office as prime minister yesterday, is expected to announce his Cabinet soon. Socio-political analyst Awang Azman Pawi of Universiti Malaya said Bersatu could be more vocal in providing a check and balance on the new government if party MPs were not part of the Cabinet. “If they are part of the Cabinet, and we know decisions are made by consensus, it would be harder for them to be critical of the government and Umno if the new administration underperforms,” he said. Yesterday, Bersatu denied an online portal’s report that said Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin had proposed rejecting appointments to the new Cabinet.
