KUALA LUMPUR – Although Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin has resigned as prime minister, his political career is not yet dead in the water as there is still no single candidate with majority support.
The Bersatu president said he ended up being caretaker prime minister as no party has the majority, and even alluded to his political rival without naming names.
“Previously, an MP claimed that he has ‘convincing and formidable’ (numbers), but now, we haven’t heard anything about it.
“We are politicians, we have information. Not one side has a bigger majority than me. But whatever it is, the process and appointment (of the prime minister) now lies with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong,” he told selected news editors after his televised address from Putrajaya yesterday.
Muhyiddin said if he offers to retake the prime minister’s job now with the same support, the political tussle will continue.
“Even if I were to offer myself, the numbers are still the same. The country will continue to be in limbo. The tussle will keep repeating itself.

Was Muhyiddin terrified of the press? |

Muhyiddin Yassin’s relationship with the broader Malaysian and foreign press corps was mute and moot.
His press advisers kept most journalists at arm’s length and relied on embedded “Muhyiddin megaphones” in the local media during his rare press conferences.
The advisers seemingly dictated terms to the government-controlled media while facing a relentless pressure to keep the free media under control.
Friendly media came across as Muhyiddin cheerleaders, not keen to put the former prime minister under scrutiny.
So, you wonder why Muhyiddin objected to his final press conference yesterday at Putrajaya being broadcast live with only friendly editors from local media present.

Unity govt can work only with clear terms, say analysts |

PETALING JAYA: A unity government will only work if all the kinks are worked out beforehand, and transparent policies outlined without any discrimination, says a political analyst.
For a unity government to work, the new prime minister must have support across the board, said academician Azmi Hassan.
All major political parties must be assured of their rights in the government. “Only then can a unity government be successful,” he told FMT.
The idea of a unity government was first floated in February 2020 when it was proposed by Dr Mahathir Mohamad after the collapse of the Pakatan Harapan government that he had led.
He invited rival political parties to link up as no political leader then had majority backing in the Dewan Rakyat. However, his proposal was rebuffed.

PETALING JAYA: Dr Mahathir Mohamad or Muhyiddin Yassin could make a comeback as prime minister if they garnered sufficient support from MPs for the Yang di-Petuan Agong’s assessment, a retired judge said.
Gopal Sri Ram said the criteria is that a prime minister candidate must be a member of the Dewan Rakyat, and the King appoints one who “in his judgment is likely to command the confidence of the majority”.
“There is no provision in the Federal Constitution to bar them,” Sri Ram said when asked if Mahathir and Muhyiddin, who resigned yesterday after losing majority support, were qualified to reassume the post of prime minister.
Muhyiddin is the Bersatu president whose party has 31 MPs, while Mahathir is the chairman of Pejuang, which has four MPs.

PETALING JAYA: PAS has reiterated that it will stand by Muhyiddin Yassin through thick and thin to help with the nation’s recovery following his resignation as prime minister.
Its president, Abdul Hadi Awang, also said the party remains committed to Muhyiddin, saying it wants to reinforce the “unity among us”.
“I said we will continue to be together in good times and in bad,” he said in a Facebook post today, referring to a telephone conversation he had with the Bersatu president.
Hadi also said he had offered Muhyiddin words of encouragement.
The Islamic party was among Muhyiddin’s staunchest supporters, often coming to the Perikatan Nasional (PN) administration’s defence.

PETALING JAYA: A possible change in government has already been factored into the financial markets, and thus any volatility as a result of former prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin’s resignation will be brief, according to economists.
“We have expected for some time that the government would change, so much of this has been factored into financial markets. So volatility in financial markets will be brief and normal,” Geoffrey Williams of the Malaysian University of Science and Technology (MUST) told FMT.
He said the most important order of business for the new government would be to change the personnel – including those in the medical field – who had failed at managing Covid-19 in the country, leading to a worsening economic crisis.
He added that the incoming government must also lift the lockdowns immediately, arguing that this will be “crucial for economic survival”.
“We are at a critical point now with a risk of tipping into a deep contraction.”

PETALING JAYA: Umno has repeated its call for a political truce and the formation of a “war cabinet” to focus on overcoming the Covid-19 pandemic in the wake of Muhyiddin Yassin’s resignation as prime minister.
Party president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said a stable administration was needed to help with the country’s recovery and attend to the welfare of the people, a matter which is becoming increasingly critical.
Zahid said Umno had vast experience in governing the nation as it had been part of Barisan Nasional which governed the country for 61 years.
The party was considering several candidates to succeed Muhyiddin, he said, while also denying that he had nominated himself for the position. He said the matter had never crossed his mind.

Bersatu link will give Ismail Sabri uphill task to win Zahid’s blessings to be PM, say analysts
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 17 — Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob will struggle for the support of Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi’s faction to be prime minister as he will be seen as a vehicle for rival Bersatu, according to political experts.
On Sunday, it was revealed that a movement was underway to secure federal lawmakers’ support for Ismail Sabri to replace Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin who resigned as the prime minister yesterday.
Due to the close split between the government and Opposition benches in Parliament, the backing of the parliamentarians in Zahid’s camp will be crucial for any such campaign.
According to Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) political science professor Ahmad Fauzi Abdul Hamid, Zahid’s faction was likely to view Ismail Sabri with suspicion after he led a band of 31 Barisan Nasional lawmakers to endorse Muhyiddin prior to his resignation.

Amid rumours of Ismail Sabri’s candidacy, Zahid says Umno weighing ‘several candidates’ for Malaysia’s next prime minister
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 16 — Umno was considering several candidates to replace Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin as the prime minister today, Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said to cast doubt over Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob’s rumoured selection for the role.
The Umno president also pointed out that he was not nominating himself for the position despite his party controlling the most parliamentary seats among those that had been part of Muhyiddin’s administration.
“In the interests of the nation, it never crossed my mind to put myself up as a candidate to be prime minister despite heading the largest party.
“As such, Umno, as a party with vast and lengthy experience in governing the country, will consider several candidates,” he said in a statement.
