Go to rural areas, don’t just shout in Parliament, Rafizi tells PH |

PETALING JAYA: PKR vice-president Rafizi Ramli has urged Pakatan Harapan (PH) to redouble its efforts to gain rural voters, stating that the coalition’s solution to broaden its appeal in rural areas is “actually quite straight forward”.
“It’s not a question of strategy, it’s a question of effort,” said the former Pandan MP.
“If you want to penetrate the rural areas, you have to get politicians who know how to move on the ground, are sincere and want to know about rural issues … rather than shouting in Parliament,” he said.
Rafizi, who was speaking at the Malaysian Student Leaders’ Summit 2021, was asked to comment on how PH could better penetrate rural areas, especially Malay-dominated ones, in which PKR president Anwar Ibrahim and DAP may not have that much influence.
He noted that PH did not have enough people reaching out to rural voters, largely because doing so was “tough and tiring” in terms of the time and effort required to do so.

Taliban vow to be accountable, probe reports of reprisals in Afghanistan: Source to Reuters
- A Taliban official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, added that the group planned to ready a new model for governing Afghanistan within the next few weeks.
- Individual Afghans and international aid and advocacy groups have reported harsh retaliation against protests, and roundups of those who formerly held government positions, criticized the Taliban or worked with Americans.
- “We have heard of some cases of atrocities and crimes against civilians,” the official said. “If Talibs (members) are doing these law and order problems, they will be investigated.”
The Taliban will be accountable for its actions and will investigate reports of reprisals and atrocities carried out by members, an official of the Islamist militant group told Reuters on Saturday.
The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, added that the group planned to ready a new model for governing Afghanistan within the next few weeks.
It has been just a week since the Taliban completed a lighting fast takeover of the country, finally walking into Kabul last Sunday without firing a shot. Since then, individual Afghans and international aid and advocacy groups have reported harsh retaliation against protests, and roundups of those who formerly held government positions, criticized the Taliban or worked with Americans.
“We have heard of some cases of atrocities and crimes against civilians,” the official said. “If Talibs (members) are doing these law and order problems, they will be investigated.”
He added, “We can understand the panic, stress and anxiety. People think we will not be accountable, but that will not be the case.”

KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysian political parties should educate themselves on what the Taliban has done to the people of Afghanistan before aligning themselves with the Islamist regime.
“Countries need to learn from whatever that is happening to Afghanistan and avoid it,” said a spokesman for Afghan refugees in Malaysia.
“For (Malaysian) political parties that want to have some kind of unity with the Taliban, I urge them to find out what the Taliban has done to Afghanistan.
“This will be a good lesson for all countries. What happened in Afghanistan could happen anywhere, so it’s best to learn from it and avoid it.”
The spokesman, who wished to remain anonymous, said he worked for an Afghan government institution before fleeing to Malaysia in 2016 with family members after Taliban-linked individuals threatened their safety.
The Taliban cannot be trusted, he said, pointing to the group’s track record on human rights abuses.

Cabinet will be relatively unchanged under Ismail, says Annuar |

KUALA LUMPUR: A former minister in Muhyiddin Yassin’s administration believes Ismail Sabri Yaakob’s Cabinet line-up will not change much from the previous one.
Annuar Musa, the former federal territories minister, said this is because those who can be part of the Cabinet come from the same pool of 114 MPs who initially supported Muhyiddin.
However, Annuar, who was speaking to reporters at an event here, said the Cabinet line-up is the prime minister’s prerogative and that no one should put pressure on him.
“The prime minister’s authority should not be undermined, let’s not pressure him. We must respect the system where this is his sole prerogative.”
He also said all MPs should feel ashamed that they were struggling for power and intent on toppling the government when the people were facing hardship due to Covid-19.

(CNN)As we prepare to head into our second fall with the coronavirus, it's admittedly a strange time. On the one hand, the situation is better than last year, primarily because we have vaccines that are doing a terrific job of protecting the roughly 60% of Americans who are eligible and fully vaccinated, and to some extent, the additional 10% who have gotten their first dose.
But things are also worse, mainly because the very contagious and possibly more dangerous Delta variant currently makes up about 99% of the coronavirus in circulation in the United States. The Delta variant has caused an uptick in infections, hospitalizations and, sadly, deaths, especially in parts of the country where vaccination rates are lagging. To add to this worrying trend, serious disease requiring hospitalization is affecting younger and healthier age groups, including children.
What's becoming clear is that we, locally and globally, are not going to be able to stamp out the coronavirus completely. Experts predict it's going to become endemic, possibly joining the other four or so common cold coronaviruses in circulation.
"We're not going to eradicate this coronavirus like we've done with smallpox; it is something that I think is going to settle into a more seasonal pattern, like the flu and colds ..." said Linsey Marr, professor of civil and environmental engineering at Virginia Tech and an expert in the transmission of infectious diseases via aerosols.
"But right now, because it's novel and so many people are not immune to it, it's really ripping through the population. But I think five years from now, we will have much greater immunity either through vaccination or natural infection," she said.
That means we are going to have to learn to "dance" with the virus -- a safe co-existence -- without constantly stepping on each other's toes.

Don’t blame Anwar, find out what went wrong instead, says DAP leader |

PETALING JAYA: A DAP leader says Anwar Ibrahim should not be shunned just because he could not get the numbers to become the prime minister.
Penang deputy chief minister P Ramasamy said there must be critical appraisal by the opposition instead to ascertain what really went wrong and why the numbers were not there.
“Simply blaming Anwar for the political defeat might not be the wise thing to do. Pakatan Harapan (PH) component parties must address the question of future leadership with a view to face the next general election (GE15),” he said in a statement today.
Ramasamy added that Anwar might have his detractors but he urged the people not to forget that without him, the opposition would not even be in a position to consider forming an alternative government.
“This is not the time for witch-hunting or putting the blame on one or two leaders. As far as I am concerned, Anwar is still the leader of the opposition. There is little difference between the number of MPs supporting Anwar and Ismail Sabri Yaakob,” he said.
Yesterday, the King announced that Umno’s Ismail Sabri got the support of 114 MPs in the race for the post of prime minister. He will be sworn in this afternoon.
Anwar could only muster the support of about 105 MPs.
Ramasamy said the opposition leader is not perfect and must be held responsible for some of the strategic and tactical errors in the recent past, adding that he should not have “counted the chickens before they were hatched”.
“Even at the present moment, it does not make sense why he trusted some of the Umno leaders for support, especially the court cluster.”
He said former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad might think that Anwar lost because he has lost support but it is easy to say this now, especially coming from a person who refused to hand over the post to Anwar as promised under the former Pakatan Harapan government.
“Yes, Mahathir’s Pejuang might have supported Anwar, but it is a bit too late. Rather than cry over spilled milk, the opposition must seriously discuss its future plans.
“More importantly, it must strategise how to win the next general election. This includes who can be trusted and what kind of alliances need to be forged. No leader is indispensable,” he said.
As for Ismail Sabri, Ramasamy said one cannot expect wonders especially with the cabinet he is going to inherit.
“He was one of the persons who must be held responsible for not addressing the pandemic matter seriously.
“Let us wait and see whether Ismail Sabri is capable of providing the leadership to address both the health and economic problems.”

U-turn of support for Ismail unlikely, say analysts |

PETALING JAYA: Analysts see it as unlikely that any of the 114 MPs backing PM-designate Ismail Sabri Yaakob will change their stand in the vote of confidence that will be taken in the Dewan Rakyat.
Oh Ei Sun of the Singapore Institute of International Affairs and National Council of Professors fellow Jeniri Amir said Malaysia could thus be assured of a stable government for some time.
Speaking to FMT, they noted that the King had personally confirmed with the MPs their choice of Ismail.
Oh said Istana Negara’s explicit mention that 114 MPs were backing Ismail was a subtle warning to them to stay true to their word.
He said he did not believe they would dare cross the King.

UNASSUMING, uninspiring and lacking in charisma. These were some of the words used to describe Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi when he took over the premiership from Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad in 2003.
However, when Abdullah was finally given his chance in the spotlight, he stepped up and surprised everyone.
Dr Mahathir was a tough act to follow but Abdullah, in his own unassuming way, inspired hope, starting with his “saya kuli nombor satu” of the people pledge.
He put in place reforms in a lethargic and bureaucratic civil service including bringing in corporate leaders to improve the delivery service; he promoted national schools to enhance unity among the races; promoting Islam Hadari – a progressive brand of Islam that prioritises knowledgeseeking and moderation; allowing space for debate by loosening controls on the media and freedom of expression; defied political pressure to interfere in the sodomy case of Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim where the latter was later found innocent and freed; established economic corridors and encouraged clean government by, among others, mooting the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).
He stepped up to the plate and brought a breath of fresh air and the people resoundingly gave him their vote when Barisan Nasional (BN) won its most successful elections ever by over 90% – winning 198 of 220 seats.

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 21 ― Pakatan Harapan (PH) chairman Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has urged for the coalition’s leaders, members and supporters to accept the Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s decision to appoint Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob as Prime Minister.
In a statement yesterday, Anwar said the Opposition acknowledged that the decision conformed to the Constitution, and the concepts of parliamentary democracy and constitutional monarchy.
“For the Opposition, this is our challenge to work harder to face the 15th general election (GE15). Let us together pray and put an effort so the Covid-19 pandemic crisis and economy will swiftly be rectified and tackled for the sake of the people,” the PKR president said.

PETALING JAYA: Newly-appointed Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob will need someone new to lead the health portfolio and it should not be Dr Adham Baba, says a former deputy health minister.
Dr Lee Boon Chye said there are plenty of qualified individuals who can fit the role.
“He can appoint a professional outside of the political circle. This is a matter of public health,” Lee told FMT, adding that the public healthcare system must remain apolitical.
He also said the new government should look into further speeding up the vaccination rate and target the remaining 4.5 million people who remain unregistered.
There should also be a stronger contact tracing team to handle Covid-19 outbreaks, he added.
