[VIDEO] The future of Malaysia after unusual hardship |

KUALA LUMPUR – Merdeka and Malaysia Day are usually set aside for feel-good flag-waving and national pride.
But this year has been unusually difficult. There’s no need to list the ways in which we’ve struggled; just that this feels like a year that public service announcements about food and multicultural neighbourhoods don’t quite cut it.
This year, we need real hope. We need to be reminded that there are countless Malaysians working hard day in, day out to build a better future for all of us who live here.
In every industry. In every state.
Running our hospitals. Feeding the hungry. Growing businesses. Making policies. Educating children. Rehabilitating coral reefs. Making us laugh. Inspiring us through art and sport.
They all believe they can make a difference. They can’t do everything, but they can do their “one thing”, and together we can build a nation.
We need hope, now more than ever, so let these voices inspire you. What do you dream for the future of Malaysia? – The Vibes, August 31, 2021

No confidence motion for new PM… yet |

KUALA LUMPUR – For now, there is no motion of confidence for newly minted Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob scheduled in the Order Paper for the Dewan Rakyat when it next reconvenes.
This is according to the parliamentary order of business issued to all MPs late last night, which also notified them of the one-week postponement of the sitting to September 13.
While the daily Order Paper can still be changed even up to the night before the sitting, the omission of the motion has opposition MPs scratching their heads, especially when this has been decreed by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong on several occasions.
DAP veteran and Iskandar Puteri MP Lim Kit Siang said, considering current developments, the motion, by right, should be the first item of business after the royal address when the House reconvenes.
“A glaring omission is the absence of a confidence motion on the new prime minister in the parliamentary order of business,” he said in a brief statement today.
“In view of the political and constitutional circumstances in the appointment of Ismail Sabri as the ninth prime minister, a confidence motion on (him) should be the first item of parliamentary business on September 14.”

PETALING JAYA: The Yang di-Pertuan Agong has used his Merdeka Day message to urge Malaysians to put aside their differences to battle the Covid-19 pandemic.
Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah noted that irresponsible parties who flout SOPs and rules will hurt communities and potentially derail the national recovery plan.
He advised the rakyat, leaders and the government to reject differences of opinion and set aside political disputes to “fight and gain independence from the pandemic”, according to a statement issued by the Comptroller of the Royal Household, Ahmad Fadil Shamsuddin.
“In line with the theme of this year’s Merdeka Day celebration which is Malaysia Prihatin, His Majesty calls on the government to continue formulating and arranging action plans to help the affected rakyat and restore a healthy economic climate.
“The rakyat should continue to be protected in order to stand agile in the face of the negative impact of this crisis,” the statement said.

PETALING JAYA: Apart from the founding fathers of Malaysia, many individuals played important roles in developing the nation we know today, and not all were men. The women were right there in the mix.
This Merdeka Day, FMT takes a look at several pioneering women in Malaysian history, some of whom were at Merdeka Stadium when independence was declared, and their significant contributions to our country.
Devaki Krishnan
Devaki was the first elected woman in the country after winning a seat on the municipal council in Kuala Lumpur in 1952. She is also proudly the first Indian woman to drive a car in the capital city.
As a member of the civil defence, Devaki took charge of the medical clinic at Merdeka Stadium during the May 1969 riots, when she was recalled to care for some 3,500 riot victims and the homeless.
She also played a pivotal role in pushing for amendments to the Guardianship of Infants Act in 1999 to allow single mothers to care for their children.
Currently at the grand age of 98, the veteran politician is an MIC life member and the longest-standing member in the party.

Split votes and force politicians to unite, says blogger |

PETALING JAYA: For blogger Syed Akbar Ali, a minority government is better for the majority now.
Syed, who runs OutSyed The Box, said the current system needs an overhaul, especially with the past and present ruling coalitions habitually retaining failed policies.
To do this, he hopes to convince voters, especially those in the same households, to split their ballots.
“Voters need to teach politicians a lesson by ensuring that they do not win with a huge majority, similar to the situation we have now,” he told FMT, referring to the current administration’s slim majority.
“We need politicians to come to their senses.”
Which is why he has kickstarted an initiative, literally called “Split Your Vote” or “Pecahkan Undi Anda”.
By doing so, he explained, it would force political parties to join forces to form a government as none of them would have secured an absolute majority.
Syed noted that Umno and PAS formed a pact after Umno lost power in the last general election, an alliance which was never thought plausible before.

PARADISE LOST: Mahathir & The End of Hope takes a critical look at Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s role in Malaysia’s political evolution and his ultimately destructive legacy of corruption, racism and religious extremism. He inherited a nation pregnant with promise and left it mired in division, uncertainty and instability, a grand kleptopia, a terrible kakistocracy. It also examines the role Mahathir played in Pakatan Harapan’s stunning 2018 electoral victory and his subsequent betrayal of the coalition he was entrusted to lead. The end result is a nation in deep crisis, adrift in a sea of uncertainty, unable to come to terms with its past, unwilling to make the compromises necessary for its future.
Written by a former Malaysian ambassador, Paradise Lost makes for sober reading. Intensely provocative, it challenges long-established shibboleths, spotlights the dangers now confronting the nation and argues that Malaysia’s only hope for redemption lies in embracing and harnessing its unique multicultural identity.

MILAN – Fire ripped through a 20-storey residential building here in northern Italy yesterday, leaving rescue workers scrambling to make sure no one had been caught in the spectacular flames and thick smoke.
The blaze started on the upper floors of the tower on the southern outskirts of the capital of the Lombardy region.
“The flames then spread to the lower levels,” causing thick smoke, the fire services said on Twitter.
Residents of the building that houses around 70 families were being contacted but no one had so far been identified as missing, it added.
“The firemen are going from apartment to apartment, knocking down doors to make sure no one remains inside,” Milan mayor Giuseppe Sala told the Corriere della Sera newspaper.
“But we are optimistic because people had time to get out,” he added.
The daily said about 20 residents suffered slight smoke inhalation.

KUALA LUMPUR – Another senior Umno politician has reiterated the call to table an anti-hopping law in the Dewan Rakyat.
In a tweet this morning, Umno secretary-general Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan said he first suggested the idea when opposition coalition Pakatan Harapan had federal power in 2018.
“On December 20, 2019, I suggested for the PH government to table a motion on an anti-hopping law but nobody bothered.
“So, I want to repeat this suggestion to the new Malaysian government under Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob. Don’t pollute the country’s democracy. Stop with the party-hopping.”
