PETALING JAYA: Selangor menteri besar Amirudin Shari has been asked to give a “detailed explanation” about the state government’s decision to approve the degazettement of the Kuala Langat North Forest Reserve for development purposes, Anwar Ibrahim said today.
In a statement, the PKR president said Amirudin will have to explain why such a decision was made when he attends a meeting of party leaders tomorrow.
Noting that the Selangor state assembly had rejected the proposal last year, Anwar emphasised that PKR was also not informed of the decision. Amirudin is the Selangor PKR chief.
“The PKR leadership had informed the menteri besar to cancel the matter since last year,” Anwar said.

Taliban celebrates defeating America |

KABUL – The Taliban joyously fired guns into the air and offered words of reconciliation today, as it celebrated defeating the United States and returning to power after two decades of war that devastated Afghanistan.
The last of 6,000 US troops who oversaw a desperate evacuation effort flew out of Kabul airport last night, ending the war that has diminished the US’ status as a superpower.
Taliban fighters quickly swept into the airport and fired weapons into the sky in jubilation, an astonishing return after US forces invaded in 2001 and toppled the hard-line Islamists for supporting al-Qaeda.
“Congratulations to Afghanistan... this victory belongs to us all,” Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid told reporters hours later from the runway of the airport.
Mujahid said the Taliban’s victory is a “lesson for other invaders”.
However, the Taliban has repeatedly promised a more tolerant and open brand of rule compared with its first stint in power, and Mujahid continued that theme.
“We want to have good relations with the US and the world. We welcome good diplomatic relations with them all,” he said.
Many Afghans are terrified of a repeat of the Taliban’s initial rule from 1996-2001, which was infamous for its treatment of girls and women, as well as a brutal justice system.

GENEVA – The World Trade Organisation agreed yesterday to a request from Beijing to evaluate China’s compliance with a ruling faulting it for unfair restrictions on imports of American grain.
The decision by the WTO’s Dispute Settlement Body (DSB) to establish an expert panel to determine whether China complied with a 2019 ruling marks the latest twist in a long-running dispute between the world’s two largest economies.
Back in December 2016, the administration of then US president Barack Obama filed a complaint with the global trade body over what it claimed were illegal Chinese restrictions on imports of American rice, wheat and corn, describing China’s use of the so-called tariff-rate quota (TRQ) system as “opaque and unpredictable”.

In a first for Malaysia, Finance Ministry releases pre-Budget statement to show govt spending plan for next year
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 31 ― The Finance Ministry released today its first-ever Pre-Budget Statement (PBS) ahead of the government’s parliamentary proposal on the country’s expenditure for next year in a bid to be more transparent.
Finance Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz said the publishing today of the PBS for the Malaysian government’s Budget 2022 is part of efforts to improve the annual budget preparation process.
“This PBS is the first in the nation’s history,” he said in a statement.
Tengku Zafrul said the PBS could also help boost investors’ confidence in how the country manages its finances.
In the 19-page PBS for Budget 2022, the Finance Ministry said transparency and extensive involvement by Malaysians in the preparation of the annual budget is one of the basic principles of good governance, which enhances public confidence especially among investors.
The ministry also said the inaugural PBS is in line with the proposed Fiscal Responsibility Act aimed at improving the “governance, transparency and accountability” of the country’s fiscal management.
“Therefore, the public is able to have a preliminary view of the direction, approach taken and expected initiatives that will potentially be in Budget 2022,” the ministry said in the PBS.

Guan Eng: Parliament sitting delay understandable since PM Ismail Sabri under Covid-19 self-quarantine, but confidence vote is a must
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 31 — Though Parliament has to be postponed a week, Opposition lawmaker Lim Guan Eng said today Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob must table a confidence motion as soon as possible once the sitting resumes.
The Bagan MP said failure to do so would be unconstitutional and seen as an act of defiance against the Yang di-Pertuan Agong who had previously issued a decree on it.
“It is clear that Parliament is postponed by one week to accommodate Ismail, who is under home quarantine after being in close contact with a Covid-19 positive patient.
