From Clement Stanley
Just a few days ago Dr Mahathir Mohamad said the whole world would laugh at us if we decided to change the prime minister again, in quick succession to Ismail Sabri Yaakob.
Thus, he said, there should be no need for a confidence vote on Ismail’s leadership despite the condition set by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong for the appointment of the ninth prime minister.
While the absence of the confidence vote may prevent Malaysia from becoming a laughing stock, Ismail’s line-up has already been the butt of jokes.

Parliamentary reforms, PM term limit and anti party-hopping laws among top priorities for Law Minister Wan Junaidi
![[Image: wan_junaidi_tuanku_jaafar_parliament_2908.jpg]](https://media2.malaymail.com/uploads/articles/2021/2021-07/wan_junaidi_tuanku_jaafar_parliament_2908.jpg)
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 30 — Incoming de facto Law Minister Datuk Seri Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar will reportedly be focusing on several issues, including reforming Parliament and reducing the number of terms one can serve as prime minister, during his tenure.
Malay daily Berita Harian quoted the Santubong MP as saying that introducing anti-party hopping laws and matters relating to the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) were also high up on his list of priorities.
“This is to bring about a change to the Malaysian Parliament so that it is in line with other Commonwealth Parliaments, because our country follows the Westminister administration model,” he reportedly said regarding Parliamentary reforms.
Although he did not specify what reforms he would like to put into place, Wan Junaidi reportedly said he would have a discussion with Dewan Rakyat and Dewan Negara speakers as soon as possible regarding the “transformation”.

National Day Rally 2021: ‘Entirely baseless’ to claim there is Chinese privilege in S’pore, says PM Lee
SINGAPORE - It is entirely baseless to claim that there is “Chinese privilege” in Singapore, though some Chinese Singaporeans might be unaware of how ethnic minorities feel, said Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong on Sunday (Aug 29).
In the Mandarin portion of the National Day Rally, PM Lee made the point that all races are treated equally in Singapore, with no special privileges for any.
But he also called on Chinese Singaporeans - who make up 76 per cent of the citizen population - to be understanding and accommodating of the concerns and difficulties faced by ethnic minorities here, especially in the areas of renting homes and looking for jobs.

Shots to be fired over state’s Covid-19 management at Penang assembly |

GEORGE TOWN – Observers were told to expect fireworks today when 40 state backbenchers gather for the first session of the Penang assembly’s sitting this year, with how the state is tackling the pandemic at the top of the agenda.
Hardly 12 months ago, the state was classified as a green zone with fewer than 50 cases daily but, as the sitting begins today, average cases in Penang have reached around 1,300 with a stunning death count of 27 just for last Friday.
Penaga assemblyman Yusni Mat Piah said he will take aim at the state over its handling of Covid-19, although a fair share of attention will also be devoted to the Health Ministry, which continues to struggle to rein in case numbers nationwide, especially with the Delta variant lurking.
The PAS lawmaker said that he has tough questions to ask Penang health exco Dr Norlela Ariffin (Penanti-PH), who is also expected to be grilled by her predecessor, Dr Afif Bahardin (Seberang Jaya-Bersatu), over the virus situation.
“The rising cases are on everybody’s mind, so I hope the state will pay attention to my questions,” he said, adding that another issue on his mind is the plight of fishermen affected by the island’s reclamation project.

UM Students’ Union rejects ‘failed minister’ for higher education ministry |

PETALING JAYA: Students from Universiti Malaya (UM) have slammed the return of Noraini Ahmad as higher education minister, saying she failed to resolve several issues faced by them throughout her first tenure.
In a statement, the Universiti Malaya Students’ Union said Noraini’s appointment was ironic when the management of higher education institutions had been problematic in the past year and a half.
It pointed out how many students in the new intake in October last year could not return home when the ministry suddenly postponed face-to-face registrations just one day prior.
“This was a problem as the announcement did not take into account how many students from other states were there at the campus for registration and would not be able to stay in the college.
“Additionally, they had to bear their own costs to return to their homes,” it said.

Recall elections will prevent party hopping, says Azalina |

PETALING JAYA: One way of preventing elected representatives from defecting to another party is to hold recall elections under the proposed anti-hopping law, says former deputy Dewan Rakyat speaker Azalina Othman Said.
In a frequently asked questions (FAQ) sheet on the proposed law, she said recall elections would allow the people to revoke their mandate given to an elected representative if he or she decides to switch parties.
The Pengerang MP explained that polling would be held in the affected area for the people to choose a new representative.
To a question about elections with a mandate for parties, Azalina described it as a mechanism for the people to vote based on political parties, not individuals.
“The party will win the seat based on the overall percentage of votes obtained. This requires amendments to the electoral system,” she said.

Kit Siang: Anwar is best man to be PM, but ‘game of numbers’ not practical now so let’s focus on Covid-19 exit before GE15
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 29 — While Lim Kit Siang still believes Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is Malaysia’s best candidate for prime minister, the DAP veteran does not think it wise for the country to put this to the test in a “game of numbers” in Parliament or to hold a snap general election right now.
The Iskandar Puteri MP again called on politicians to focus on leading the country out of the Covid-19 health crisis so that the 15th general election can be held safely in the foreseeable future.
“I have not hidden my position that the best prime minister for Malaysia today is Anwar Ibrahim and not anybody else whether Muhyiddin or Ismail Sabri, but I disagree with those who believe that it is still possible for Anwar to become the prime minister through the game of numbers.
“I do not believe that this is practical politics,” he said in a statement today.

Covid cases in England are 26 times higher than a year ago |

Coronavirus infections in England are now 26 times the levels that were experienced this time last year, according to the Office for National Statistics. Scientists described the figures as “sobering”.
They warned that the reopening of schools in England this week was likely to trigger further rises in Covid cases – with more to follow when students return to universities and colleges. A fresh wave of infections could, in turn, lead to new social restrictions being imposed as winter approaches.
As a result, pressure is mounting on the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation to approve the deployment of booster jabs for vulnerable people and the extension of vaccinations to most 12- to 15-year-olds. The latter move would bring the UK into line with the US and most large European nations and is backed by most ministers.

Where China's wealthy travelers are going during the pandemic |

(CNN) — The sandy shores of Sanya. The mountains of Yunnan. Giant panda sanctuaries in Sichuan.
Wealthy Chinese travelers may not be able to travel internationally with ease these days, but they have no shortage of attractive travel destinations in their own backyard.
And it seems the country is readying for yet another boom in domestic travel ahead of Golden Week in October.
After more than a month of strict restrictions and lockdowns to stamp out a Delta variant outbreak, China reported no new local Covid-19 cases on August 23 for the first time since July.
Before the outbreak -- which was the worst in China since 2020 -- domestic travel had been on the upswing.
According to a report by the China Tourism Academy, the sector expected approximately 4.1 billion domestic trips in 2021, reflecting a 42% increase compared with 2020. In addition, the academy has projected $511 billion in revenue from domestic tourism, up 48% year on year.
Meanwhile, an annual survey of high-net-worth individuals by Chinese research firm Hurun Report found that interest in domestic travel jumped 31% year on year and 44% of respondents said they planned to increase their travel spending.
