Amid rumours of Ismail Sabri’s candidacy, Zahid says Umno weighing ‘few candidates'

Amid rumours of Ismail Sabri’s candidacy, Zahid says Umno weighing ‘several candidates’ for Malaysia’s next prime minister

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 16 — Umno was considering several candidates to replace Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin as the prime minister today, Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said to cast doubt over Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob’s rumoured selection for the role.

The Umno president also pointed out that he was not nominating himself for the position despite his party controlling the most parliamentary seats among those that had been part of Muhyiddin’s administration.

“In the interests of the nation, it never crossed my mind to put myself up as a candidate to be prime minister despite heading the largest party.

“As such, Umno, as a party with vast and lengthy experience in governing the country, will consider several candidates,” he said in a statement.

The Taliban have retaken Afghanistan – this time, how will they rule it?
Posted by: superadmin - 08-16-2021, 09:44 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: 4436.jpg?width=620&quality=85&auto=forma...286d5214e2]

The Taliban agreed on Saturday not to enter Kabul city for now and to wait for the evacuation of western diplomats and troops, but the Afghan president Ashraf Ghani’s sudden departure on Sunday, without informing anyone, has led to the collapse of the remnants of police and army and created a vacuum that the group decided to fill immediately. The Taliban are now expected to officially take over in the coming days, with a kind of transfer of power being arranged by a delegation of political leaders from Kabul. Although the Taliban may well adopt the “emirate” label for Afghanistan again, it seems that their plan is to incorporate new features in their government.

The Taliban started discussions about an interim government with the Americans in 2018-19, indicating that their ambitions in terms of power-sharing could be quantified in about a third of all positions of power. The interim government plan did not take off; instead the Ghani administration in Kabul opted for military confrontation, hoping to demonstrate to the Taliban that the Islamic Republic had staying power.

Malaysia loses out on Facebook’s latest cable network: sources
Posted by: superadmin - 08-16-2021, 08:44 PM - Forum: Business. Economy and Investment - No Replies

[Image: 20210816-tech-underwater-undersea-cable-...ot_com.jpg]

KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysia lost an investment opportunity from Facebook Inc after being left out from the tech giant’s latest subsea cable system, people familiar with the matter told The Vibes.

Facebook in a statement yesterday announced its Apricot undersea cable system – a 12,000km-long cable that will connect Guam, Japan, Taiwan, the Philippines, Indonesia and Singapore.

The tech titan is expected to launch the cable system in 2024 “to meet rising data demands in the region and support existing cable systems, such as the recently announced Echo and Bifrost”.

Insiders claimed that missing out on this latest project is another blow to the country’s digital economy ambitions, after it was excluded from the Echo and Bifrost networks.

“What people need to understand is that, generally, it is bad for everyone when a subsea cable is down. This means less volume of data traffic, less money and increased loss of damages,” said a market participant.

They are pointing the finger at former transport minister Datuk Seri Wee Ka Siong’s removal of the cabotage exemption policy, which was put in place by his predecessor, Anthony Loke.

Who will the king pick? – P. Gunasegaram

AS Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin met the Yang di-Pertuan Agong today just after high noon and news filtered out that the cabinet had already tendered its resignation, pouring rain blanketed the centre of Kuala Lumpur, the Parliament building and the palace.

Whether it would be an omen of tough times to come or a new era washed clean by the need to face tough times under a new leadership would now depend on two things - the wisdom of the king and our members of Parliament (MPs) in whose collective hands lie the choice of the new government.

With Muhyiddin and his cabinet forced into resignation, now the due process to form a new government begins. The constitution gives the power to the king to appoint a new person who in his judgment is likely to command a majority in Parliament.

That’s going to be a complicated process and the king has a tough decision to make which will depend on how events unfold over the next few days. A general election is not an option right now. Who he chooses will dictate how things go moving forward. And who will that be?

The thing to remember is that he may pick someone who does not have a majority yet, effectively giving the chosen one the mandate to get enough MPs to stand beside him. But the person he chooses must have a reasonable chance of forming the government.

PETALING JAYA: After the fall of the Muhyiddin Yassin-led Perikatan Nasional government, MPs were quick to turn their attention to what comes next: the appointment of their replacements by the next prime minister.

Speaking to FMT today, Klang MP Charles Santiago said he hopes for a quick resolution from the King.

“It’s unclear how long the process (of appointing a new prime minister) will take, but given the major problems we have with Covid-19, the state of our hospitals and unemployment, hopefully things will be resolved quickly,” the DAP man said.

“We can’t have this dragging on for weeks.”

PETALING JAYA: Muhyiddin Yassin has resigned as the eighth prime minister of Malaysia after immense pressure by Umno and other opposition parties demanding that he do so.

His resignation meant a proposed vote of confidence in the Dewan Rakyat in September is now moot and brings to an end the shortest tenure of a prime minister in Malaysia’s history.

FMT takes a look at the rise and fall of Muhyiddin Yassin.

PETALING JAYA: State Umno leaders have urged all party grassroots members and MPs to stand united behind party decisions.

In the joint statement by 13 state chiefs, they called on all members to abide by the party leadership and the guidelines stated in the party constitution.

This comes amid growing political instability now that the Perikatan Nasional coalition has fallen, after several ministers announced that the Cabinet had resigned.

This morning Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin had a 30-minute audience with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong at the Palace, where he is believed to have tendered his resignation.

Opposition top guns meet, unity govt proposed
Posted by: superadmin - 08-16-2021, 03:12 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: Top opposition party leaders including those from Sabah and Sarawak are having closed-door meetings after Muhyiddin Yassin’s resignation earlier today.

The ongoing meetings, with some held online and also at the PKR headquarters, are said to involve bigwigs of various parties after the Muhyiddin Cabinet quit today. Those at the PKR headquarters are from PKR, DAP and Amanah.

“There are talks within all opposition parties, including those from Sabah and Sarawak.

“Everyone in the meeting is hoping that there will be a unanimous show of support for the new prime minister so the new government has a solid majority to run the country,” a party insider told FMT.

He said opposition parties want a unity government as the Perikatan Nasional coalition had failed to manage the country.

PETALING JAYA: The cabinet has tendered its resignation to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, ending the tenure of the Perikatan Nasional government, Khairy Jamaluddin has confirmed.

In an Instagram post, the science, technology and innovation minister Khairy Jamaluddin thanked Malaysians for the opportunity to serve the country.

His confirmation comes after intense speculation that Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin would tender his resignation during his audience with the King.

Meanwhile, Bersatu youth chief Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal vowed that the PN administration will come back stronger.

“We stand tall and proud of you Tan Sri President. Thank you for your service and leadership,” he said in a Facebook post addressed to Muhyiddin.

After PN’s collapse, MN to ‘come back to life’, says analyst
Posted by: superadmin - 08-16-2021, 12:49 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: PAS is expected to revive its cooperation with Umno through Muafakat Nasional (MN) if the Perikatan Nasional (PN) government collapses, says a political analyst.

Azmi Hassan said PAS’ contradicting stance of defending PN but supporting MN at the same time was just to buy time for the Islamist party’s longevity.

“It is likely that the Umno MPs who supported Muhyiddin Yassin before this will gradually decrease and PAS is predicted to return to MN with Umno,” he told FMT.

Azmi said Umno will accept PAS with open arms, just as it will with its own leaders who are currently leaning towards Muhyiddin.

“Umno pragmatically understands that they desperately need (the MPs’) support to move on to the next step,” he said.
