Malaysia still not testing enough for Covid-19, says Damansara MP

KUALA LUMPUR, July 21 — Malaysia is still under testing for Covid-19, said Damansara MP Tony Pua today.

In a statement, he claimed that the Ministry of Health (MoH) has not been consistent with its daily testing and had conducted significantly fewer tests for a six-week period despite the country’s rising infection rate.

He said during the first week of movement control order (MCO) 3.0, which commenced on May 23, the MoH carried out an average of 109,601 daily tests to return an average of 7,631 daily positive cases or 6.96 per cent positivity.

But for the six subsequent weeks until July 10, he added, the MoH had actually carried out significantly fewer tests despite the high and rising positivity rate.

Azalina: AG should answer questions in Parliament, time for lawmaker to hold the role
Posted by: superadmin - 07-21-2021, 03:37 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

KUALA LUMPUR, July 21 — Malaysia’s attorney general should be a member of Parliament to enable the government’s top legal adviser to be present in parliamentary sittings and answer questions from lawmakers, Dewan Rakyat Deputy Speaker Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said urged today.

Azalina made this suggestion when asking Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin as the leader of the lower house to consider calling Attorney General Tan Sri Idrus Harun to the upcoming five days of special sittings from July 26 to August 2.

“Ideally, the AG should also participate in the upcoming Special Sitting. The MPs have questions unanswered,” she said in a three-page statement today.

Azalina pointed out that the Federal Constitution’s Article 145(2) states that it is the attorney general’s duty to advise the Yang diPertuan Agong or the Cabinet or any minister on legal matters as Malaysia’s chief legal advisor.

PAC to call in Khairy, Tengku Zafrul, Accountant General next week over Covid-19 vaccine procurement

KUALA LUMPUR, July 21 — Proceedings before the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) concerning the procurement of Covid-19 vaccines and their use for Malaysians will resume on July 27, its chairman Wong Kah Woh said today.

The Ipoh Timur MP said proceedings will start with Minister of Science, Technology, and Innovation Khairy Jamaluddin next Tuesday, followed by Finance Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz and Accountant General Datuk Yacob Musfata on July 28.

Wong said the last time the PAC was briefed about vaccine procurement was on January 5, before Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Adham Baba and Khairy.

“Considering the latest developments concerning the procurement of Covid-19 vaccines during the six months of the Emergency, the PAC are of the view the government must supply a more in-depth explanation to the Committee seeing how scenarios have changed since last January,” read the statement today.

Come out and protest against govt’s failure, people urged
Posted by: superadmin - 07-21-2021, 03:27 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: Sekretariat Solidariti Rakyat has called on the people to take part in a physical protest against the Perikatan Nasional (PN) administration on July 31.

It said the protest, known as “Keluar Dan #Lawan” (Come Out And Fight), was a symbol of opposition against the current leadership.

“We invite everyone to take to the streets at a time and place which will be announced in the near future,” it said in a statement.

Sekretariat Solidariti Rakyat said this was because the government was incapable of navigating the country out of the Covid-19 pandemic and its impact on the economy, livelihoods and the people’s health.

“It’s time for us to have leaders who are self-aware, responsible and humble enough to understand the people,” it said.

Doctors quitting, giving 24 hours’ notice, says group
Posted by: superadmin - 07-20-2021, 04:51 PM - Forum: Covid-19 Pandemic - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: The Hartal Doktor Kontrak group says doctors are giving 24-hour notices, seemingly after being burnt out and frustrated at the lack of career opportunities.

A social media campaign, Hartal Doktor Kontrak has called for contract doctors to go on strike on July 26 if the government fails to resolve the issue of their permanent placement.

A representative from Hartal Doktor Kontrak previously told FMT there were not many incentives for contract doctors to remain in public service, adding that there are also lack of opportunities for junior doctors to further develop their careers, either through a master’s degree or by taking up a specialisation.

“Doctors are resigning with 24 hours’ notice. Simply too tired and can’t take it anymore,” stated a post on Hartal Doktor Kontrak’s Twitter account yesterday.

Attached to the post was a photo of a roster which showed that a staff member had resigned. No information on the hospital or medical facility was provided.

Sinovac, Pfizer equally effective, says health DG
Posted by: superadmin - 07-20-2021, 01:50 PM - Forum: Covid-19 Pandemic - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: Health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah has rubbished claims on the substandard quality of China’s Sinovac vaccine, stating that it is as effective as the Pfizer vaccine against Covid-19.

This, he said, is based on published medical data on Sinovac.

In a Facebook post, Noor Hisham said that on July 7, the New England Journal of Medicine published a report on the Sinovac experience in Chile from February to May on 4.2 million fully vaccinated individuals compared to 5.5 million not vaccinated.

“Sinovac was found to reduce Covid-19 infection by 65.9%, reduce hospitalisation by 87.5%, reduce ICU admission by 90.3% and reduce deaths by 86.3%,” he said.

He said the Israeli health ministry had also pointed out recently that the Pfizer vaccine reduced infection by 64% against Covid-19, but was 93% effective against hospitalisation and serious illness.

US journalist aims to help the world understand China

Erik Nilsson, an American journalist who works at China Daily and a recipient of the Chinese Government Friendship Award, held a talk to promote his new book in Shanghai on July 16 .

Titled Closer to Heaven: A global nomad's journey through China's poverty alleviation, the book was published in Chinese and English by China Intercontinental Press in January.

Divided into four parts, the book chronicles Nilsson's experience of reporting on the Sichuan earthquake, his volunteering stint in Qinghai province, China's poverty alleviation projects and the country's economic progress along the Yangtze River.

"These journeys have been adventures. They've brought me from the darkness of the quake zone toward the light, from the United States to the 'roof of the world' and closer to heaven," Nilsson told audiences at the talk.

"And they've been a firsthand exploration of how China, in turn, has lifted so many people from the hell that is poverty and closer to heaven, as it exists on this Earth."

Alibaba co-founder Joe Tsai is the mystery buyer behind a $157 million apartment deal in Manhattan’s most prestigious condo tower, according to people familiar with the deal.

Tsai, who also owns the Brooklyn Nets NBA team, purchased two full-floor condo apartments at 220 Central Park South in two transactions totaling $157.5 million, say people close to the transaction. The purchase marks what’s believed to be the third most expensive home ever sold in the U.S. The priciest home ever sold in America is in the same building -- Ken Griffin’s purchase of four floors (51 through 53) for $238 million in 2019.

Tsai’s purchase spans two floors (the 60th and one above) and has sweeping views of Central Park and mid-town Manhattan. The deal also includes a studio apartment on the 18th floor, likely for staff.

Thanks in part to Griffin’s purchase, as well as blue-chip buyers like Sting and Daniel Och, 220 Central Park South has continued to soar in value even through the pandemic, and it’s more than 90% sold out. The units purchased by Tsai both sold for more than than their original sale price. The 61st floor sold for $51.4 million last year, while the 60th floor sold for $50.9 million.

A spokesperson for Tsai didn’t immediately comment.

The purchase comes at a sensitive time for Tsai and Alibaba. Alibaba shares have fallen by a third since October, and Chinese authorities are cracking down on the country’s big tech companies to curb their power and data reach. Tsai’s fellow Alibaba co-founder Jack Ma has largely retreated from public life after he criticized Chinese regulators and Beijing scuttled the initial public offering of his fintech giant Ant.
