Selangor MPs slam ‘clueless’ knee-jerk EMCO
Posted by: superadmin - 07-01-2021, 09:39 PM - Forum: Covid-19 Pandemic - No Replies

[Image: Charles-Santiago-n-Khalid-Samad-Collage-010721.jpg]

PETALING JAYA: Two Selangor MPs have slammed the “clueless” Perikatan Nasional-led government over the decision to impose an enhanced movement control order (EMCO) over most of the state from July 3 to July 16.

Klang MP Charles Santiago said the EMCO would be pointless if many sectors were still operating while leaving other companies and workers to suffer under the lockdown.

Senior minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob had said “essential” sectors could stay open while workers could leave EMCO areas for work using the letters previously issued by the international trade and industry ministry.

Santiago told FMT that the government must conduct mass screenings and vaccinations in the state, urging Putrajaya to bring the vaccines to the people rather than making them wait and go for appointments.

“Otherwise, it’s just a waste of time and you’re destroying the country and making our people poorer. Do you know the number of people who are out of a job and living in fear? This government has completely lost the plot.

History unlikely to forgive Donald Rumsfeld’s Iraq warmongering
Posted by: superadmin - 07-01-2021, 07:18 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: 2000.jpg?width=620&quality=85&auto=forma...97d8d38384]

Donald Rumsfeld’s name will forever be associated with the biggest military fiasco in US history, the 2003 invasion of Iraq in pursuit of non-existent weapons of mass destruction, alongside the widespread use of torture that has dogged America’s reputation ever since.

He also played down the growing insurgency against the US-led occupation after Saddam Hussein’s fall, dismissing the collapse of law and order in Baghdad with the insouciant phrase “stuff happens”, which would go on to haunt him for the rest of his life.

His reluctance to heed warnings that did not fit in with his world view alienated the generals and the military rank and file. His insistence there was no serious threat in Iraq contributed to the fact that the US military was driving around in lightly armoured Humvees a year after the invasion.
In November 2006, the Army Times took the unusual step of calling for his resignation.

“Rumsfeld has lost credibility with the uniformed leadership, with the troops, with Congress and with the public at large,” an editorial said. “His strategy has failed, and his ability to lead is compromised. And although the blame for our failures in Iraq rests with the secretary, it will be the troops who bear its brunt.”

Report: Kedah MB says won’t help those who raise white flag for help, cites propaganda against govt

KUALA LUMPUR, July 1 — The Kedah government has reportedly said it will not be sending help to anyone who raises the white flag to ask for help to get through the Covid-19 pandemic and nationwide lockdown.

Utusan Malaysia reported Kedah Mentri Besar Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor saying only those who lodge a request for help by phone to the official channel the Disaster Control Operation Centre (PKOB) will be given food aide throughout the current movement control order.

“We have distributed PKOB numbers for all districts and the numbers for the people’s representative service center for the public to call for food aid.

“You do not need to raise the white flag to ask PKOB for help when you can use social media platforms like WhatsApp and Facebook,” Sanusi was quoted saying in Utusan Malaysia.

Global views of China remain negative, but Singapore an exception
Posted by: superadmin - 07-01-2021, 03:21 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: ak_chsol_300621.jpg?itok=oDZ7w1BX&timestamp=1625026008]

WASHINGTON - Singaporeans have more positive views on China than most people in other advanced economies, who continue to view China in a broadly negative light, according to a survey report published on Wednesday (June 30).

And although the images of both the United States and China were at or near historic lows last year, the US has since seen a turnaround in public opinion across 17 advanced economies, while most continue to see China unfavourably.

Singaporeans bucked the trend by being the only group to view China in a better light than the United States, and to prefer stronger economic ties with China over the US, in the Pew Research Centre's Spring 2021 Global Attitudes Survey.

Foreign countries that 'bully' China will meet a 'great wall of steel,' says Xi

Foreign countries that 'bully' China will meet a 'great wall of steel,' says Xi during Communist Party centenary

[Image: 210630222556-04-cpp-anniversary-celebrat...ge-169.jpg]

Beijing (CNN)In an event commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Chinese Communist Party Thursday, President Xi Jinping claimed that only the party could ensure China's continued stability, and any attempt to divide it from the country would fail. "Without the Communist Party, there will be no new China," Xi said.

Speaking in front of a reported crowd of 70,000 at a highly-choreographed ceremony in Tiananmen Square, Xi delivered a strongly nationalist speech in which he positioned China's rise as a "historical inevitability," vowing it would no longer be "bullied, oppressed or subjugated" by foreign countries, to thundering applause and cheers.

"Anyone who dares to try, will find their heads bashed bloody against a great wall of steel forged by over 1.4 billion Chinese people," Xi said in comments that later appeared to be softened in the government's own English language translation.

Xi's speech capped an occasionally rainy morning of celebrations in the capital to mark the party's centenary, including patriotic songs, speeches from officials and flyovers by the People's Liberation Army Air Force.

China declared officially malaria-free by WHO
Posted by: superadmin - 07-01-2021, 02:52 PM - Forum: Health News - No Replies

[Image: 210423073021-restricted-file-anopheles-g...us-169.jpg]

(CNN)The World Health Organization declared China officially malaria-free on Wednesday -- making it the first country in the Western Pacific region to eliminate the life-threatening disease in more than 30 years.

Malaria, a parasitic disease transmitted through the bite of a female mosquito, kills 400,000 people a year worldwide, the majority children younger than 5, according to WHO. There is no licensed malaria vaccine on the market -- though a number of vaccine candidates are under development, and one has shown unprecedented efficacy levels in trials this year.

Malaria cases in China have been falling steeply since the turn of the century. In 2020, after reporting four consecutive years of zero indigenous cases, China applied for an official WHO certification of malaria elimination -- which was granted this week.

"Today we congratulate the people of China on ridding the country of malaria," said WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus in a statement on Wednesday. "Their success was hard-earned and came only after decades of targeted and sustained action. With this announcement, China joins the growing number of countries that are showing the world that a malaria-free future is a viable goal."

Change of leadership on the cards?
Posted by: superadmin - 07-01-2021, 12:52 PM - Forum: Politics - Replies (1)

PETALING JAYA: The withdrawal of support by two Umno MPs for Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin in January raised the spectre that the Perikatan Nasional administration could fall but the declaration of emergency put this speculation to rest.

Now, there are rumblings and murmurs of changes in the corridors of power.

Nearly six months since the emergency began on Jan 12, the question over whether Muhyiddin has majority support in Parliament is looming once more.

The prospects of a prolonged emergency and delay in reconvening Parliament appear remote. The Malay rulers have made it clear that there is no need for an extension of the emergency and that Parliament must reconvene.

Observers saw the revered rulers’ views as a response to the worsening Covid-19 situation and the pleas of the rakyat over an economy in tatters.

KL’s landmark Hotel Istana to close permanently on Sept 1
Posted by: superadmin - 07-01-2021, 12:29 PM - Forum: Business. Economy and Investment - No Replies

KUALA LUMPUR, July 1 ― Hotel Istana Kuala Lumpur will cease operations on September 1, according to a circular from its management.

The June 30 circular, which Malay Mail verified, was signed by general manager Nooradzzudin Omar who explained that a voluntary separation scheme would be offered to affected workers.

In the circular, Noorazzudin said the management was forced to make the difficult choice to close the hotel due to the challenging economic situation caused by the Covid-19 pandemic that exacerbated the stiff competition in the hospitality market.

“We have arrived at this decision after considering the present circumstances and all available options. We are left with little choice other than to proceed with this closure,” he said.

“Many of you will be aware that our competitive advantage has declined over a period of time in the face of stringent competition from our neighbouring hotels and service apartments. The situation has now been aggravated by the Covid-19 pandemic which has and continues to impact our industry and its ability to achieve normality.

As hunger spreads, time for govt to raise white flag?
Posted by: superadmin - 07-01-2021, 09:32 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

We are in a wrong kind of Malaysia: starving families are flying white flags outside their homes, seeking food and assistance.

Sadly, Malaysia is the new face of hunger.

Unparalleled demand for food aid is on the rise and many rely on charity for food.

The fear of being unable to feed their children hangs over the days of people whose livelihoods have been snuffed out by local economies battered by lockdowns.

Periodical one-off assistance by the government has had little effect. The poverty line is bulging.

The white flag of hunger is a sure sign of rising anger against the Muhyiddin administration that has failed to get the Covid-19 crisis under control.

There will be great relief if the government instead waved the white flag. Surely, the time to admit defeat has come.

The surge in hunger comes amid an indefinite lockdown, spiralling Covid-19 infections and deaths, soaring suicide rates, and everything else that drives a nation into a state of deep depression.

The very texture of our daily life is under assault, casting a morbid, sinking feeling.

Such is the temperature of unrelenting grief, that it is hard to avoid the sense the government has little appetite for the heartbreaking issue: “How am I going to put food on the table for my family?”

  #BenderaPutih: Where to get help
Posted by: superadmin - 06-30-2021, 10:14 PM - Forum: Covid-19 Pandemic - No Replies

[Image: 205cbcd0954c1049c3b3df0a1b91642e.jpg=s660]

Launched several days ago, the “#BenderaPutih” (white flag) campaign encourages those who are struggling financially to display a white flag in front of their homes as a sign that they need immediate assistance.

Similar to last year’s “Kita Jaga Kita” initiative, this latest social media campaign comes as many strive to endure the Covid-19 lockdown, now in its fourth week and with no end in sight.

Several businesses and NGOs have since stepped forward to help feed those in need.

Below, Malaysiakini compiles a list of avenues where the needy can get aid. This is not an exhaustive list.
