Convene Parliament next week, urges Ramkarpal

PETALING JAYA: Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin should act now and enable Parliament to sit as early as next week, says DAP’s Ramkarpal Singh.

The Bukit Gelugor MP said this would give effect to the views reiterated earlier today by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah, that it is imperative for Parliament to sit as soon as possible.

Ramkarpal said the 28-day notice for a Parliament sitting could be waived under Order 9 (2)(a) of the Standing Orders of the Dewan Rakyat.

“This was done when an emergency sitting of Parliament was held following the MH17 tragedy in 2014,” he pointed out in a statement today.

Ramkarpal, who chairs DAP’s national legal bureau, noted that this was not the first time the King had indicated that Parliament ought to sit as soon as possible, stating that it was “certainly sound advice” as the government’s “poor management” of the Covid-19 pandemic should be urgently debated.

Dewan must sit as soon as law allows, not at PM’s convenience, says Rafidah
Posted by: superadmin - 06-29-2021, 06:44 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: The royal call for Parliament to reconvene means it must be held as quickly as the law allows, not on a date the prime minister or other politicians find suitable, says Rafidah Aziz.

The former international trade and industry minister said those who understood laws and regulations relating to parliamentary sessions would be able to accurately determine the earliest date possible for the next sitting.

“People don’t want to hear any excuses or expected (dates) any more,” she said in a statement. “The rules cannot be sidelined.”

She added that Parliament was already equipped with plastic screens and that all MPs were required to wear face masks as well as follow all the SOPs. All MPs have already been vaccinated.

Rafidah said there were various issues that need to be addressed, including the billions of ringgit that have been spent and the effects, proposals to increase the debt ceiling and the national recovery plan.

She noted that the people were still facing difficulties because the government’s actions and its stimulus packages have not brought the desired results.

Trump's false reality is being exposed on multiple fronts
Posted by: superadmin - 06-29-2021, 04:55 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: Donald-Trump-2018.jpg?crop=429px%2C0px%2...=681%2C383]

(CNN)Former President Donald Trump is facing a wall of accountability and truth as new revelations and investigations expose his abuses of power, delusional lies about the election and business conduct to ever greater scrutiny.

Just consider what has taken place over the last several days:
The confluence of dangers facing Trump would usually be sufficient to doom any presidential legacy and rupture any hopes of a political comeback in 2024. Yet the question is now what it always has been: Will a twice-impeached former President who has always kept one step ahead of the law and political gravity by disdaining truth and ignoring shame pay a price for any of it?

After audience, deputy speaker says PM must advise King on Parliament reopening
Posted by: superadmin - 06-29-2021, 03:29 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: Parliament will only reconvene after the Yang di-Pertuan Agong has been advised by the prime minister, Dewan Rakyat deputy speaker Mohd Rashid Hasnon said after his audience with the King today.

Speaking to reporters outside Istana Negara, Rashid maintained that the King must be advised by Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin before Parliament can reopen, even during the Emergency.

The former PKR MP thanked the King for granting him an audience and for his concern over the situation.

“We will reconvene Parliament whether through hybrid or normal proceedings,” he said after his hour-long audience today.

Aside from Rashid, Dewan Rakyat speaker Azhar Azizan Harun and his other deputy Azalina Othman Said were also at the palace for an audience with the King this morning.

Dewan Negara president Rais Yatim and his deputy Mohamad Ali Mohamad were also present.

All five have since left the palace.

PAS MP dismisses ‘white flag’ campaign, says better to pray

PETALING JAYA: The people should not be told to easily admit defeat when faced with challenges, says a PAS leader in response to the “#WhiteFlag” campaign.

Bachok MP Nik Abduh Nik Aziz urged those affected to pray instead.

“Raise your hands in prayer to God. That is the flag of strength and optimism in the test of life. Don’t admit defeat when being tested by teaching the people to raise a white flag,” he said in a Facebook post today.

A recent social media campaign called for people to fly a white flag to signal to others that they are in need of immediate assistance, especially in terms of food, as the country remains in lockdown indefinitely.

(CNN) — China's long-awaited Chengdu Tianfu International Airport has officially begun operations, offering travelers a new gateway to the home of giant pandas.

Its inaugural flight, operated by Sichuan Airlines, took off at 11:10 a.m. on Sunday, bound for Beijing.

Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan province, is now the third city in the country to have two international airports, joining Shanghai and Beijing.

Constructed at a cost of about 70 billion Chinese yuan ($10.8 billion), phase one of the massive aviation hub has the capacity to handle up to 60 million passengers per year, further opening up the country's southwest region.

Three runways and two terminals, covering a total area of 710,000 square meters, are in operation. State media outlet Xinhua reported the airport will eventually house terminals covering 1.4 million square meters, capable of handling 120 million passengers annually.

US airstrikes follow a spate of sophisticated attacks by Iranian drones that can avoid US surveillance

[Image: 210628101856-drone-drill-file-0115-exlarge-169.jpg]

Washington (CNN)President Joe Biden's decision to conduct airstrikes against Iran-backed militia groups on the Iraq-Syria border Sunday night follows a recent spate of attacks against US military assets in Iraq by a new class of Iranian-made drones that US officials say can evade US surveillance and defenses.

The latest of these attacks occurred earlier this month when an armed drone detonated at a dining facility at a key entry point in the Baghdad airport used by American soldiers and diplomats, a US military official told CNN. In April, a drone damaged a CIA drone hanger near Erbil.

The American airstrikes Sunday night hit operational and weapons storage facilities at two locations in Syria and one in Iraq, according to the Pentagon, targets that were "selected because these facilities are utilized by Iran-backed militias that are engaged in unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) attacks against U.S. personnel and facilities in Iraq."

Despite disputes, Umno will unite ahead of polls, says Rahman Dahlan
Posted by: superadmin - 06-29-2021, 11:25 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

Abdul Rahman Dahlan

PETALING JAYA: The ongoing disputes within Umno do not mean that the party is weak, said an Umno Supreme Council member.

Abdul Rahman Dahlan told FMT that although the Umno leadership is seen to have various “tribes”, it does not mean the party cannot unite at the negotiating table.

“Differences of opinions will not lead to a situation where we (Umno leaders) cannot come back together. There is still room for discussion and resolution,” said Rahman, who had himself been embroiled in a leadership dispute with Sabah Umno chief Bung Moktar Radin ahead of the state elections last September.

Rahman, who is a former federal minister, led several Sabah Umno leaders to oppose the appointment of Bung as the Barisan Nasional (BN) election director for the polls.

Spanking can worsen a child's behavior and do real harm, study finds
Posted by: superadmin - 06-29-2021, 11:17 AM - Forum: Educations - No Replies

[Image: 171205150734-09-history-of-spanking-rest...ge-169.jpg]

(CNN)Physical punishment does not appear to improve a child's positive behavior or social competence over time, according to a review of 69 studies from the US, Canada, China, Colombia, Greece, Japan, Switzerland, Turkey and the United Kingdom.

The review, published Monday in the journal Lancet, found physical punishment such as spanking is "harmful to children's development and well-being," said senior author Elizabeth Gershoff, a professor in human development and family sciences at The University of Texas at Austin.

"Parents hit their children because they think doing so will improve their behavior," Gershoff said. "Unfortunately for parents who hit, our research found clear and compelling evidence that physical punishment does not improve children's behavior and instead makes it worse."

Where’s the strategy for recovery, say economists
Posted by: superadmin - 06-29-2021, 10:24 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: SHOP_CLOSED_COVID19_PUTRAJAYA_FMT_10042020.jpg]

PETALING JAYA: Two economists have questioned the lack of a government strategy to guide economic recovery, in the wake of the latest Pemulih relief package announced yesterday.

Carmelo Ferlito, chief executive of the Center for Market Education, said the government’s RM10 billion direct fiscal injection had missed the point.

“Lockdowns and aid packages are temporary measures that should be used to buy time before coming up with a true economic plan, which is completely missing,” he said. “The same goes for fiscal injection. It should be a temporary relief measure while a sound economic recovery plan is implemented.”

He said the amount of aid that would reach individual citizens was too small and would be insufficient to tackle mounting poverty.
