Where’s the strategy for recovery, say economists |

PETALING JAYA: Two economists have questioned the lack of a government strategy to guide economic recovery, in the wake of the latest Pemulih relief package announced yesterday.
Carmelo Ferlito, chief executive of the Center for Market Education, said the government’s RM10 billion direct fiscal injection had missed the point.
“Lockdowns and aid packages are temporary measures that should be used to buy time before coming up with a true economic plan, which is completely missing,” he said. “The same goes for fiscal injection. It should be a temporary relief measure while a sound economic recovery plan is implemented.”
He said the amount of aid that would reach individual citizens was too small and would be insufficient to tackle mounting poverty.

Online, Malaysians start #benderaputih movement to signal distress without humiliation
KUALA LUMPUR, June 29 — Malaysians on social media have come up with the #benderaputih (white flag) movement for those in dire need of food and essentials to indicate this to neighbours without needing to beg for help.
The movement suggested that those who desperately needed assistance fly a white flag or cloth outside their homes, which would let those able to help know which households could be facing extreme difficulties.
The initiative arose amid growing reports of Malaysians being pushed to their breaking points by the near-total and indefinite closure of the economy due to the pandemic.
“Raise a white flag at your home if you need help with food and essentials. Do not take action that will hurt you and your loved ones.
“Avoid stress. No need to beg or humiliate (yourselves). Just fly a white flag. Please let there be those who will help,” said one poster promoting the #benderaputih movement.
Malaysians online have slowly begun adopting the movement and spreading it, with some describing the initiative as “heartwarming” and timely.

Binance: Financial watchdog FCA bans crypto-currency exchange |

Binance, the world's biggest crypto-currency exchange, has been banned by the UK's financial regulator.
The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) has ruled that the firm cannot conduct any "regulated activity" in the UK.
It also issued a consumer warning about Binance.com, advising people to be wary of adverts promising high returns on cryptoasset investments.
Binance said the FCA notice would have no "direct impact" on the services it provides from its website Binance.com.
Binance's existing crypto exchange is not UK-based so despite the FCA ruling, there will be no impact on UK residents who use the website to purchase and sell crypto-currencies.
The FCA does not regulate crypto-currencies, but requires exchanges to register with them. Binance has not registered with the FCA and therefore is not allowed to operate an exchange in the UK.

4,000 cases a day hard to hit with present measures, warns Boon Chye |

PETALING JAYA: With workplace clusters making up over two-thirds of daily Covid infections, former deputy health minister Dr Lee Boon Chye said the below-4,000 cases a day threshold to transition out of the present lockdown may be far harder to reach.
“The number of daily cases also depends on the number of tests done. If more testing is done, the number of infections will be higher. If there are fewer tests, the number will be lower,” he told FMT.
Due to that, he said the daily new infections are not an accurate representation of the Covid-19 situation in the country.
He was asked to comment on Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin’s announcement that Malaysia will only transition to Phase 2 of the national recovery plan when case numbers drop to below 4,000 a day.
Other indicators to transition to Phase 2 are that the rate of bed use in intensive care units is at a moderate level and that 10% of the population has received two doses of the vaccine.

Britain's Covid-19 vaccination drive has weakened link between infections and death, says scientist
LONDON (REUTERS) - Britain's mass Covid-19 vaccination campaign has weakened the link between infections and deaths but it has not yet been completely broken, the head of a scientific advisory body to the government said on Sunday (June 27).
Prime Minister Boris Johnson is hoping to lift most remaining coronavirus restrictions on July 19 after being forced to postpone any further easing this month because of a growing number of cases largely from the more infectious Delta variant.
Professor Peter Horby, chair of the government's New and Emerging Respiratory Virus Threats Advisory Group (Nervtag), told the BBC's Andrew Marr Show that Britain was seeing a "much lower level of hospitalisation".

Just have full sitting if all MPs are in town, says Fahmi |

PETALING JAYA: The proposal to call elected representatives to attend a special sitting of Parliament simply to amend the Standing Orders related to a hybrid sitting is “absurd”, says Lembah Pantai MP Fahmi Fadzil.
He said there is no need for the special session and stressed that a full Parliamentary sitting could be held if all MPs, including those from Sabah and Sarawak, are already in Kuala Lumpur.
“He (Dewan Rakyat speaker) wants the MPs to be physically present, and when they are here (in Parliament), they will meet for about half a day to approve what?” said Fahmi during a Facebook Live broadcast last night.
“It’s just to approve a few things for the hybrid sitting. They (the MPs) have already been called to come to Kuala Lumpur in early August, so they should just have a full parliamentary sitting.”
In a joint statement on Friday, Dewan Rakyat speaker Azhar Azizan Harun and Senate president Rais Yatim proposed that a special sitting of Parliament be held in early August to discuss how a hybrid parliamentary sitting – partly online and partly in person – could be held.

Open more sectors, or see them close for good, warns ex-deputy minister |

PETALING JAYA: The government should allow more economic sectors to open up in a safe and responsible manner under the current phase of the lockdown, former international trade and industry deputy minister Ong Kian Ming said today.
He added if business owners are forced to close until Covid-19 cases drop below 4,000 they may end up having to close for good instead.
“The government needs to make another U-turn on the announced policy of only opening up the economy further when the number of cases drops below 4,000.
“If not, many more businesses will collapse and die. Human misery and suffering will be increased significantly beyond what is already happening now,” DAP’s Ong said in a statement.
The Bangi MP also urged Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin to come up with a plan for each ministry on how various economic sectors can open up safely, subject to strict SOPs, for those who have been vaccinated.

Admit it, the lockdown hasn’t worked, say employers |

PETALING JAYA: The government should consider ending the lockdown as it looks like it has failed to effectively bring down the number of Covid-19 cases, says the Malaysian Employers Federation (MEF).
MEF executive director Shamsuddin Bardan said the full lockdown with only 17 economic sectors since June 1 had not led to a distinct drop in infections, with cases hovering above 5,000 daily.
“Perhaps the government needs to admit that the lockdown did not meet the desired results and therefore, should not be continued.
“The government should allow all employers that are able to adhere to the SOPs to resume operations immediately to enable them to sustain their businesses,” he told FMT.
Shamsuddin said employers, workers and regular Malaysians were bearing the brunt of the restrictions, as the nation loses up to RM1 billion a day with the lockdown.

Phase One: Businesses in Klang say they are surviving on the patronage of regulars and the neighbourhood community
KLANG, June 28 — A line of people are in front of Yap Kee, a kopitiam in downtown Klang, waiting patiently for their turn to choose which dishes — golden fried chicken or fish, vegetables, type of curry gravy — they want for their takeaway lunch.
Such a sight, which used to be an everyday affair, has become rare now as businesses here and in other parts of the country struggle to deal with the economic impact of Covid-19.
Shops here are mostly closed except for businesses that are allowed to operate during Phase 1 of the National Recovery Plan.
Many of the owners of local eateries Malay Mail visited said things are definitely much more difficult this time round, not just for them but for their customers as well.
