Pakatan calls for AG’s resignation for breach of confidentiality after advice to King on when to reconvene Parliament made public
KUALA LUMPUR, June 27 — Attorney General (AG) Tan Sri Idrus Harun should be terminated with immediate effect for breach of confidentiality when he issued a public statement to clarify the legal position under the Federal Constitution regarding the King’s constitutional functions to summon for Parliament to meet, the Pakatan Harapan (PH) Presidential Council said today.
PH said in a statement that the AG should only provide his advice directly to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and keep it confidential, not by announcing them openly as it would be viewed as a form of transgression by belittling the views of the Malay Rulers in the present context.
“The statement has sidelined the spirit of the Constitution and depicts the AG’s sidelining of the Malay Rulers institution to protect a government that wishes for absolute power without any control or limit to its tenure.

PETALING JAYA: The government must provide greater clarity on its plans to manage the pandemic.
Leaving businesses in the dark until the last minute will only prolong their struggles, former international trade and industry minister Rafidah Aziz said.
This came in response to Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin’s announcement this morning that the “total lockdown” phase of the National Recovery Plan would be extended indefinitely until Putrajaya’s daily case and vaccination targets are met.
The announcement was made just a day before the lockdown was scheduled to end.
In a statement, Rafidah said such an announcement should not come “at the last hour” as many would have already anticipated and prepared for reopening and easing of restrictions.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Oregon’s largest city broke its all-time heat record on Saturday. It could beat the new mark on Sunday.
Forecasters say many Pacific Northwest communities may sweat through the hottest days in their histories as temperatures soar during a heat wave that has sent residents scrambling for relief.
Stores sold out of portable air conditioners and fans, hospitals canceled outdoor vaccination clinics, cities opened cooling centers, baseball teams canceled or moved up weekend games, and utilities braced for possible power outages.
Portland, Oregon, reached 108 degrees Fahrenheit (42.2 degrees Celsius) Saturday afternoon, according to the National Weather Service. The previous heat record for Oregon’s largest city was 107 F (41.7 C), a mark hit in 1965 and 1981.
Seattle reached 101 F (38.3 C) Saturday, making it the hottest June day on record and only the fourth time in recorded history the usually temperate city had topped 100 degrees.

PETALING JAYA: Machang MP Ahmad Jazlan Yaakub says he was not consulted on Barisan Nasional’s supposed joint decision to not support any motion of no confidence against Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin when Parliament sits.
He said that the consensus did not involve all BN MPs, adding that if there were discussions among elected representatives from the coalition, it only involved those with certain “interests”.
“This is not a question of posts or positions, we must think about the party’s honour.
“What’s the point of having big posts and high positions when the party is being weakened by others at the same time?
“I don’t know if there is a statement on BN MPs willing to support the government of the day because I was not invited for discussions.
“To me, I decided not to support Perikatan Nasional (PN), I will not go back on my decision,” he told FMT.
However, Jazlan conceded that he would follow the party’s decision to back or reject a no-confidence motion if it is tabled.
“We will follow whatever the party decides,” he said.

PETALING JAYA: Out of a job just three days before the national lockdown began in May, 36-year-old Deviga Murugan was worried about the family’s future – until her son said she should use her talent at cooking to venture into business.
“I just started the business with one foot in to see if it was going to be workable, and it has been really good! People have been buying and supporting the business,” she said, bubbling with excitement as she fried a vegetable dish for her children’s lunch.
To her surprise and gratitude, customers and neighbors started to spread the word about her home-cooked food among their own circles, and eventually more people started ordering meals from her.
A few customers were so keen on helping Deviga and her family that they started advertising her menus in several personal Facebook groups, just to get the word out. Several loyal returning customers frequently order their lunch or dinner.

Disapprove of LGBT but don’t oppress, says Turkish scholar |

PETALING JAYA: Muslims do not have the right to oppress the beliefs and behaviour of which they disapprove, including those of the LGBT community, says Mustafa Akyol, a prominent Turkish scholar.
Akyol said that although the traditional Islamic view considers homosexual relations “haram”, he believes that not everything that is religiously banned should also be banned by the state.
People were now living in modern states where every citizen has equal rights, and this included the right to live as they see fit unless they harm others, he said.
Akyol, a senior fellow on Islam and modernity at the Cato Institute, a US-based libertarian think tank, was commenting on a Malaysian government plan to widen the scope of existing shariah law to take action against social media users for insulting Islam and “promoting the LGBT lifestyle”.
He told FMT: “Muslims should know that they can disapprove of certain beliefs or behaviours, but this does not give them the right to oppress those beliefs or behaviours.

Some events in the last week have indeed been depressing for me, and to a certain extent for the Malaysian Indian community. It made some of us wonder what could actually drive a few into doing obviously wrong things at a time when the nation is under “full lockdown”.
The sight of people dancing and drumming and taking to the streets in a boisterous manner in a funeral procession was not only shocking but disgusting too. This is definitely not the culture that many of us here were taught or which we would practise even during normal times.
The group could not have done it out of ignorance, it must have been a show of defiance or a protest of sorts as they displayed symbols of an outlawed secret society. To most of us, it was an act of stupidity and one that was totally unnecessary. The 13 have since been charged for SOP violations and involvement in triads.
Then came the case of a teenager, again from the same community, who was filmed feeding alcohol to a five-month-old child, followed by the case of a group allegedly from another outlawed secret society, the Gang 35, celebrating Father’s Day with the cake in the shape of the number, also in violation of Covid-19 rules.

Time to do away with ‘essential’ and ‘non-essential’ labels for industries in lockdown, coalition tells govt
KUALA LUMPUR, June 26 — All businesses are “essential” in making up a complete and diverse economy and unnecessary labels do not help improve businesses’ survivability, according to a trade group coalition.
In a virtual press conference today, Industries Unite co-founder Datuk David Gurupatham said it was time to discard the “essential” and “non-essential” labels placed on businesses and instead to employ targeted measures to reopen as many businesses as possible.
“Every industry is essential as it employs people and creates jobs.
“To truly recover and inject life into the economy, the Covid-19 battle must be targeted, locality by locality, building by building, district by district, state by state,” he said.

PETALING JAYA: The attorney-general’s office and the office of the Dewan Rakyat speaker are being used to delay the reconvening of Parliament, says opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim.
Yesterday, Attorney-General Idrus Harun said the Yang di-Pertuan Agong must act on the advice of the Cabinet on when Parliament can reopen, after the Agong had earlier stated it should happen “as soon as possible”.
Citing Article 40(1) and (1A) of the Federal Constitution, Idrus said the Yang di-Pertuan Agong must act on the advice of the Cabinet “unless otherwise stated”.
Idrus went on to say that while Article 55(1) of the Federal Constitution empowered the Agong to call for Parliament to reconvene, the emergency ordinance overruled this provision during the period the emergency was in force.
The PKR president said Idrus’ statement flew in the face of the wishes of the Agong and his fellow Malay Rulers, and could drag the country into a constitutional crisis.

(CNN)One Saturday evening last December, as Peter and Lisa Marshall cuddled on the couch watching their favorite television show, Peter looked at Lisa and asked if she would marry him.
What Peter, 56, didn't remember was that they were already married.
Diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer's three years ago, Peter had begun losing his memories -- even those of his fairytale romance.
He had forgotten the first time they met, held hands, shared a kiss. He had also forgotten their wedding.
"It's heartbreaking," Lisa, 54, told CNN. "We've made new memories, but it hurts because I always want to say 'Remember that one time?' I want to reminisce with him, but Peter can't remember anything now, much less what happened 20 years ago."
The couple, who have been married for 12 years, met as neighbors in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Both were married to other partners at the time and busy raising their children, but they forged a friendship and remained close until Peter's family moved to Connecticut.
After nearly a year without contact, the two reconnected when they discovered they were each going through divorces. After just one rendezvous in Harrisburg, the two quickly became inseparable and remained in an eight-year, long-distance relationship until all their children entered college.
