PARIS: Worldwide Covid-19 cases passed 150 million today, according to an AFP count, with numbers soaring recently due to a relentless second wave in India.
150.3 million cases have been declared since the virus was first discovered in China in December 2019, according to an AFP compilation of official data.
Worldwide, the number of new daily infections has more than doubled since mid-February.
After the second wave from October to January, the figure had slowed to a little over 350,000 a day.
It is now 821,000 a day.
In India, 2.5 million cases have been detected over the past seven days, an average of 357,000 a day – 30 times as many as in mid-February.

Cabinet’s ‘deafening silence’ on cabotage policy reflects a failed govt, says Guan Eng
KUALA LUMPUR, April 30 — The Perikatan Nasional (PN) government has failed the test of putting Malaysia’s digital future first by prioritising its own political future, DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng said.
In a statement today, Lim said he saw this as the government’s way of saving Transport Ministry Datuk Seri Wee Ka Siong some face, and in turn, securing MCA’s two-MP support for PN.
“Malaysia’s digital investments of RM12 to RM15 billion are not as important as MCA’s two-MP support, (since it is) critical for the PN government which cannot afford to lose any MPs following the loss of its parliamentary majority,” Lim said.
Lim added that the Cabinet’s failure to meet its own two-week deadline to resolve Wee’s cabotage policy and rescue the nation’s digital future is symbolic of a failed government.

Bersih 2.0: Govt must provide clear date on Undi18, reiterates call for EC chairman’s resignation
KUALA LUMPUR, April 29 — Electoral watchdog Bersih 2.0 today demanded that the government provide a clear date with regards to the implementation of Undi18 and automatic voter registration (AVR) which was unanimously agreed in Parliament in a bipartisan manner in 2019.
Bersih said the remark made by Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan who is the minister in the Prime Minister’s Department handling the law and Parliament portfolio was open to interpretation and failed to inspire confidence on all sides.
It also called into question the conflicting statement made by Takiyuddin and the Election Commission (EC) of the aforementioned initiative’s implementation, further disputing whether EC was still a body independent of the executive.
“The government and the EC must give an explanation as to why only a month ago they claimed Undi18 would not be able to implement yet Takiyuddin’s recent statement states that it will be done at the earliest.

Kit Siang’s aide: RM50,000 fine failed to deter spread of Covid-19, only burdened people
KUALA LUMPUR, April 30 — Increasing the compound fines for Covid-19 violations to RM50,000 has not deterred the spread of the disease, but rather, burdened ordinary citizens, says lawyer Syahredzan Johan.
Instead of taxing the public, he said it would be better to increase awareness while making sure no double standards are practised in dishing out punishment.
“Senior Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri said this increase in compound was to ‘protect the people’ and not persecute them. However it is clear that increasing the compound has not brought about the desired result in controlling the spread of the disease, but rather, put pressure on the people.
“I urge the government to retract this incredibly high increase in compound that isn’t helping them implement their SOPs. If the government feels there is a need to make sure SOPs are adhered to they should increase awareness and at the same time ensure no double standards are practised when executing these existing rules,” he said in a statement.

PETALING JAYA: Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) must launch an investigation into controversial lecturer Kamarul Zaman Yusoff for allegedly stoking religious tensions in comments made about a DAP MP.
Opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim said Bukit Mertajam MP Steven Sim’s assistance to a Malay youth who was facing some tough times had been “made an issue” by the academic.
Sim had presented the youth, who is a food delivery rider, with a motorcycle after finding out he was using a borrowed bicycle to get by.
Kamarul then accused Sim of “Christianisation” and warned Malay-Muslims against accepting help from “Christian evangelists”.

Apa Nama: When a leader does not have a vision for the long-term welfare of a nation and its next generation (Mahathir's Vision 2020 is a scam as far as I am concerned) and gets carried away with the dollar sign, this is what happens.
This ultra-Malay called Mahathir is actually not a smart fellow. He brought great havoc to our country, the institutions and the civil service. All of which still have the stains and scars left behind by him.
As I have often mentioned, he is always a menace and nuisance to Malaysia. I am not surprised that he will sack anyone who crosses his way because his personal song is Frank Sinatra’s ‘My Way’.
