KUALA LUMPUR: Trading of AMMB Holdings Bhd’s shares were suspended today after the banking group agreed to pay RM2.83 billion to the government as settlement on all outstanding claims and actions in relation to its involvement in the 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) corruption scandal.
The shares were last traded at RM3.16 on Friday last week.
“The board of directors of AMMB wishes to announce that the company has requested for a suspension of the trading of its securities from 9am to 5pm on Monday, March 1, 2021 and Tuesday, March 2, 2021.
“Bursa Malaysia Securities Bhd has approved the request on Monday,” it said in a filing with Bursa Malaysia today, adding that the request was also made pending an announcement from the group.

China’s aging population is a bigger challenge than its ‘one-child’ policy, economists say
- China’s decades-old one-child policy drew renewed attention late last month after authorities gave mixed signals on whether they were closer to repealing limits on how many children people can have.
- “In general I don’t think the relaxing of the birth policy could have much of an economic impact because the slow growth in population hasn’t been because of policy restriction, not for the last 20 years,” said Dan Wang, Shanghai-based chief economist at Hang Seng China.
- Instead, economists expect more investment in factory automation and development of retirement and health care-related industries.
BEIJING — China’s decades-old one-child policy gained renewed attention in the last few weeks, after authorities gave mixed signals on whether they were closer to abolishing limits on how many children people can have.
Authorities have rolled back the controversial one-child policy in recent years to allow people to have two children. But economists say other changes are needed for boosting growth as births fall and China’s population rapidly ages.
“There are two ways to address this. One way is to relax the birth control, something (that) will help on the margin, but even if they fully relax the control (it’s) probably difficult to reverse the trend,” said Zhiwei Zhang, chief economist at Pinpoint Asset Management.
“The other way to deal with it, from an economic policy perspective, is to make industry more dependent on other sectors,” he said.

CDC director signs off on J&J’s single-shot Covid vaccine, clearing way for distribution to begin
- CDC Director Dr. Rochelle Walesnky has signed off on Johnson & Johnson’s vaccine.
- Walensky’s approval allows the federal government to begin shipping the doses to sites across the country.
- Her approval comes after a CDC panel voted unanimously to recommend the shot for those 18 and older.
- A J&J executive told lawmakers on Tuesday that the company is prepared to ship nearly 4 million doses as soon as it receives emergency use authorization.
Dr. Rochelle Walensky, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, signed off Sunday on Johnson & Johnson’s one-shot Covid-19 vaccine for those 18 years of age and older as the federal government prepares to ship out millions of doses this week.
Walensky’s green light comes after an advisory panel to the CDC voted unanimously to recommend the use of Johnson & Johnson’s vaccine.
“Today marks an encouraging step toward an end to the #COVID19 pandemic,” Walensky wrote on Twitter. “I have now signed CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices’ (ACIP) recommendation that endorsed the safety and effectiveness of Janssen’s COVID-19 vaccine for people 18 & up.”
The federal government can now begin shipping doses out to sites across the country. The ACIP met in an emergency session to review data on the vaccine, which on Saturday became the third shot to receive an emergency use authorization from the Food and Drug Administration.

PETALING JAYA: It is not up to the law minister to deter challenges to unconstitutional shariah laws, a lawyer said, amid an apex court ruling which declared last week that the Selangor legislature is incompetent to pass a law which criminalises unnatural sex.
Syed Iskandar Syed-Jaafar-al-Mahdzar said every citizen has a constitutionally-guaranteed right of access to justice.
“As a lawyer, the minister should know that any attempt to deter access to justice is a serious contempt of court. The House of Lords in Raymond v Honey laid this down,” he said.
Instead, of trying to interfere with the justice system, Syed Iskandar said Takiyuddin Hassan should ensure that no unconstitutional laws were passed by state legislators.

Party hopping needs to be outlawed, says DAP’s Ramkarpal again |

PETALING JAYA: DAP’s Bukit Gelugor MP Ramkarpal Singh today again called for party hopping to be outlawed.
This follows the latest series of party hopping by Pakatan Harapan representatives.
Ramkarpal said party hopping was “an anathema to any democracy as it can destabilise any government”, such as Perikatan Nasional.
“Regardless of whether they switched within PH or moved to PN, it makes no difference.
“An amusing argument was raised when justifying party hopping in this instance — that government funds are needed to serve the constituency and such funds are not available if one is in the opposition.”
Ramkarpal said this argument was “laughable”.

After Tebrau MP defects, Johor Wanita PKR urges voters to kick ‘false leaders’ out |

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 28 — Tebrau voters should send a clear message to their MP, Steven Choong, who abandoned Pakatan Harapan for the ruling Perikatan Nasional today, said Johor Wanita PKR chief Napsiah Khamis today.
In an immediate response to confirmation that Choong and Julau MP Larry Sng have both left PKR to support Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, Napsiah said the defections were an act of treachery towards her party and voters.
Napsiah reminded Choong that he was elected on a PKR ticket by voters who wished to see the party lead the constituency.
“The betrayal is a most abhorrent act; it taints the value of loyalty and causes harm that is both tangible and intangible.

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 28 — The eCurve shopping mall in Petaling Jaya has notified tenants that it will be closing permanently effective March 31, 2021.
Tenants were served a notice regarding the mall’s closure sometime in the middle of this month.
According to a laundrette owner, Rebecca Chong, most of the tenants have started packing in preparation to shift out a week or two before the mall shuts its doors to the public.
“Some of the shops have chosen to stop operations altogether because they have not been getting customers since the MCO (movement control order) is still in effect.
“The rest are packing up, like us. We have to reinstate the lot for the mall management before we move out,” said Chong when met by Malay Mail at the mall today.
News about the mall ceasing operations started circulating yesterday on social media platforms.
However, some have conflated eCurve with the adjacent strip mall, The Curve, that is unaffected.
“It’s eCurve, not The Curve. The management met with us shortly after they served us with the letter, asking us for mutual understanding on ceasing operations of the mall.
“We understand that everyone is suffering due to the pandemic; we just have no choice but to go with it,” said Chong.
Since the Covid-19 pandemic hit Malaysia and sent the country into the unprecedented MCO, Chong said the eCurve mall management had waived rental fees for tenants for March and April.

3 Amanah reps may have left due to Dr M factor, says a PKR leader |

PETALING JAYA: Cracks are starting to show in Pakatan Harapan (PH) with the coalition leaders of two component parties openly attacking each other over the three Johor Amanah assemblymen crossing over to PKR.
Taking a swipe at Amanah deputy president Salahuddin Ayub who expressed regret over its coalition partner accepting the assemblymen into its fold, PKR Youth secretary Syukri Razab said the leader seemed to be confused between comrade and enemy.
“Salahuddin was seen to be so affected when PKR accepted the three ex-Amanah men, so he likened PKR as disrespecting the PH spirit.
“What about Salahuddin himself who is still so close with the group that does not want to be in PH and even openly attacked the PKR president?” he said in a direct reference to his association with Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

A Self Help Hold for Emergencies |

In any acute situation I immediately go for this Jin Shin Jyutsu self help hold for emergencies. Usually, it calms things down, and I feel my normal self within seconds to a few minutes.
Of course, please always seek medical help and advice in an acute emergency.
Acute situations
By acute I mean a condition which arises suddenly and which I experience intensely. Acute conditions include: difficulty breathing, choking, nausea, and vomiting. Also if you feel suddenly unwell or experience severe abdominal cramps, menstrual cramps, etc.
The exercise
How to practise the Jin Shin Jyutsu self help hold for emergencies:
Place the hands on the insides of the knees. The fingers rest at the bottom of the inside of the knee (the thumb will be at the top of the knee as shown in the image).
You can also apply this hold to another. You can do it with arms crossed or not. I personally like crossing my arms, but experiment with which way feels more comfortable and effective for you.
We have 26 energy sites on the right and left sides of the body which are mirror images of each other. Of the 26 ‘energy sites’ or Safety Energy Locks located on the body this is number One and is called The Prime Mover.
The Ones move the energy
The ‘Ones’ are located on the insides of the knees, and are helpful in emergencies because they MOVE THE ENERGY DOWN, and assist in keeping it moving, connecting our head with our toes and vice versa.
I have used the Ones in the few acute situations that I have experienced over the years, and it took a few minutes for the pain and discomfort to subside, but I held on, and I have never had recurrences.

Malaysian fans of the English Premier League are a funny lot. Their loyalty to English football clubs can never waver, sticking to the club of their choice through thick and thin.
Sometimes I wonder if their support for teams so alien is worth much more than the “death do us part” oath at marriage ceremonies. Some even say switching support in the EPL is akin to changing wives!
But what shocks me is that these same Malaysians, who abhor such acts of disloyalty in the EPL, seem to ignore such displays of inconstancy in the country’s politics.
