PETALING JAYA: The split in PAS between those backing PPBM and those supporting Umno has been widening since it became part of the governing coalition one year ago, two sources close to the groups said today.
They said one group supported the Perikatan Nasional coalition (in which PAS and PPBM are allies) while the other wanted to strengthen the Muafakat Nasional partnership of PAS and Umno
One of them told FMT that the rift had been widening after several key PAS leaders gave their backing to PPBM and snubbed Umno.
“The other group has remained close to Umno,” he said, adding: “It’s like there are two leaders in PAS. One is aggressive, while the other leader who is close to Umno, is quiet.”
Those close to PPBM were hoping for court cases involving Umno leaders over alleged graft to be sped up before GE15, he said, adding that the desire to see some Umno leaders out of the picture was getting stronger within this faction.

MOF: Ambank to pay RM2.83b to Malaysia as 1MDB settlement, will save time instead of going to court; won’t affect claims against Jho Low
KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 26 — AMMB Holdings Berhad has agreed to pay RM2.83 billion to the Malaysian government as global settlement on all outstanding claims and actions over AmBank Group’s involvement in the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) matter, the Finance Ministry announced today.
The ministry said that this settlement is part of the Malaysian government’s continuing efforts against all parties directly or indirectly involved in 1MDB and 1MDB-linked entities to recover funds.
Finance Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul Aziz said the settlement agreed with AMMB Holdings would enable a faster recovery of funds to be used for 1MBD’s financial obligations, as compared to going through long court processes.
“This latest settlement is beneficial for the Malaysian people. Resolving this through the court system would have cost a lot of time, money and resources.

Assigning 122 Islamic enforcers for Nur Sajat witch hunt overzealous, says transgender rights group
KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 27 ― Justice for Sisters (JFS) has labelled the Selangor Islamic Religious Department’s (Jais) attempt to detain cosmetics entrepreneur Nur Sajat as extreme, and called for the state Islamic authority to end all prosecution against her immediately.
In a statement, the transgender rights group expressed its extreme concern about the persecution against Nur Sajat and charges of allegedly “insulting Islam” for merely being herself.
“We are astonished by the financial and human resources that are being allocated for this search and arrest operation against Sajat.
“All these actions by JAIS are extreme and demonstrate their overzealousness in arresting and detaining Sajat at all costs for merely expressing herself and her gender identity,” the group said.

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 26 — PAS reportedly attributed the public squabble between Malay parties within Perikatan Nasional (PN) to the distribution of electoral seats ahead of the 15th general election.
In a report by Malay daily Sinar Harian, the Islamist party’s deputy president Datuk Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man however said that he is confident they can avoid a three-way clash if the distribution of election seats is handled properly.
“The polemic between the governing parties under the PN banner still takes place because the government was developed jointly. God willing, if issues become a polemic, we will manage it,” he reportedly said.
This comes as Umno and Bersatu have taken their spat public, with the former relaying its dissatisfaction against the latter that is leading the federal government.

Anti-Asian violence must be charged as a hate crime |

(CNN)Prosecutors need to charge anti-Asian violence as hate crimes. While any violent crime impacts the victim, a crime motivated by hate can impact entire groups of people, be they of a particular race, religion, ethnicity or sexual orientation.
To effectively deter future bigots from acting on their worst impulses, the criminal justice system must not only prosecute the violent acts, but also the hateful intent behind them.
The need to adopt this approach could be not be more urgent. According to the New York Police Department, last year there was a 1,900% increase in hate crime incidents driven by anti-Asian sentiment. And almost 3,000 incidents of anti-Asian discrimination were reported to the Stop AAPI (Asian American Pacific Islander) Hate database, which was created after the pandemic began to track incidents of racial violence.
But let's put a face to these alarming statistics. On the morning of January 28, Vichar Ratanapakdee, an 84-year-old Thai immigrant, was out on his morning walk in San Francisco when a 19-year-old assailant ran across the street and slammed him to the ground. Ratanapakdee lost consciousness, never to wake up again.
So far, state prosecutors in San Francisco have charged the defendant only with murder and elder abuse. He has pleaded not guilty.

PETALING JAYA: It is an “open secret” that Umno will withdraw its support for PPBM and leave the Perikatan Nasional (PN) government, Umno Supreme Council member Mohd Puad Zarkashi said.
However, he said this would only be finalised at the party’s general assembly in March, which would discuss the issue of most of Umno’s 191 divisions saying they did not wish to cooperate with PPBM in the next general election (GE15).
“Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin should understand that the decision has already been made. It is just not official yet,” he said in an interview with The Malaysian Insight.
Puad said the party’s grassroots were not happy with PN as the government had appointed village chiefs that were unwilling to cooperate with Umno’s local leaders.

Ibrahim Ali, Perkasa ordered to pay RM150,000 in damages to Lim Guan Eng for defamation
KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 26 — The Federal Court in a majority decision today said Perkasa and its then president Datuk Ibrahim Ali have to pay RM150,000 in damages to former Penang chief minister Lim Guan Eng over the group’s defamatory statements published in October 2011, as ordered by a previous court.
The Federal Court’s three-judge panel chaired by Federal Court judge Datuk Nallini Pathmanathan had last September heard Lim’s appeal against the Malay rights group and Ibrahim, with two judges today deciding in the DAP secretary-general’s favour.
In reading out the summary of the majority judgment that was also agreed by Justice Nallini, Federal Court judge Datuk Harmindar Singh Dhaliwal said the High Court was more than justified in awarding compensation of RM150,000 to be paid by Perkasa and its officials which he noted was not excessive.
“In conclusion and for the reasons mentioned, a public officer when suing as an individual, whether suing in personal or official capacity is not prohibited from bringing a defamation action,” the judge said when reading out the summary in an online proceeding via Zoom.
