KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 3 — Former Felda chairman Tan Sri Mohd Isa Abdul Samad was found guilty of nine corruption charges involving RM3 million by the High Court here today.
Judge Mohd Nazlan Mohd Ghazali, when delivering his judgment, said that the prosecution provided sufficient evidence to prove their charges against the former Negri Sembilan mentri besar beyond reasonable doubt.
Mohd Nazlan added that Isa’s defence failed to successfully disprove the prosecution’s case against Mohd Isa, that their defence was based on afterthoughts, had an inconsistent narrative, and was without proper evidence to back their arguments.
“The defence has failed to raise reasonable doubt and the prosecution has managed to prove their case as stated in all nine charges.

PETALING JAYA: Former prime minister Najib Razak has issued a letter of demand to former attorney-general Tommy Thomas for defaming him in his recently published memoir “My Story: Justice in the Wilderness”.
Najib’s lawyer, Muhammad Shafee Abdullah, said his client was seeking an apology and RM10 million in compensation.
“If we do not receive a satisfactory reply from you by this Friday, our clear instruction is to institute legal proceedings early next week,” he said.
In the letter of demand to Thomas, Najib said that on about Jan 31, he had published a book and the alleged defamation was in chapter 42 under the title “Altantuya” which ran from pages 400 to 405.
The letter also stated that by clear inference and innuendo, Thomas had conveyed the message that he, as the then AG and public prosecutor (between June 6, 2018 and Feb 28 last year), was satisfied of the truthfulness of the allegations by two convicted persons that Najib was involved in directing them to murder Altantuya Shaariibuu.

PETALING JAYA: An Amanah leader says investor confidence in Malaysia went downhill after the 1MDB scandal erupted in 2015.
Central committee member Faiz Fadzil said the insinuation by Umno Youth chief Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki that the rot in investments began after the change of government in 2018 was “baseless and confusing”.
Recently, Asyraf, in demanding senior minister for economy Mohamed Azmin Ali to explain the 68% decline in Malaysia’s foreign direct investment (FDI) in 2020, said foreign investor confidence had yet to recover after the last general election.
However, in a statement today, Faiz said “the fact is that investor confidence in Malaysia began deteriorating since the 1MDB scandal erupted in 2015″.
He said foreign investors began fleeing the market then, resulting in RM19.5 billion outflow of foreign funds.

- Chinese electric carmaker Nio said it delivered 7,225 vehicles in January, more than four times the number of cars delivered during the same month last year.
- Its rival Xpeng said it delivered 6,015 electric cars in January, a third-straight record month of deliveries.
BEIJING — Chinese electric car start-up Nio is off to a solid start for the year, even if it has a long way to go to catch up with market leader Tesla.
The company said Monday it delivered 7,225 vehicles in January, more than four times the 1,598 cars delivered during the same month last year.
Last month’s figures also mark Nio’s sixth-straight month of record high deliveries, bringing the start-up’s cumulative deliveries to 82,866.
It’s taken Nio about six years to reach this point, while Tesla delivered 180,570 cars in the last three months of 2020 alone.

(CNN)Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell on Monday issued a tacit rebuke of controversial Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, slamming the Georgia Republican's "loony lies and conspiracy theories" as a "cancer" for the party.
"Loony lies and conspiracy theories are cancer for the Republican Party and our country," McConnell said in a statement.
"Somebody who's suggested that perhaps no airplane hit the Pentagon on 9/11, that horrifying school shootings were pre-staged, and that the Clintons crashed JFK Jr.'s airplane is not living in reality. This has nothing to do with the challenges facing American families or the robust debates on substance that can strengthen our party."
While McConnell did not name Greene directly, his statement stands as a scathing rebuke of the freshman Republican House member. The Hill first reported on the statement.
Greene quickly shot back on Twitter, asserting that "the real cancer for the Republican Party is weak Republicans who only know how to lose gracefully. This is why we are losing our country."

Politician’s wife faces death penalty after drug trafficking charge in Kuala Lumpur
KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 1 — The spouse of a political figure faces the death penalty after being charged in court for trafficking and producing drugs.
The New Straits Times reported Lyiana Roslee, 34, as facing three charges at the Magistrate’s Court in Ampang earlier today, after several cannabis plants were discovered in a house along Jalan Duta Suria in Ampang. No plea was recorded.
In the first and second charges, the accused along with another individual who has yet to be charged trafficked cannabis weighing 1.58 kilogrammes or 7.8 litres.
For the third count, Lyiana and the same individual are accused of cultivating nine plants believed to be cannabis trees, either on her own or on behalf of another person at the same place and time.

Silver futures jump more than 6% as Reddit traders try their squeeze play with the metal - The sharp move higher builds off gains for silver and silver-related equities late last week.
- The spike in demand for silver appears to be related to retail traders in the Reddit forum WallStreetBets, which has helped drive trading activity in heavily shorted stocks like GameStop and AMC Entertainment in recent weeks.
Futures contracts for silver surged higher early Monday morning as the Reddit-fueled boom in highly shorted stocks appears to be spilling over into the metals market.
Silver futures were up 8% shortly after the futures market opened, marking the biggest move in the futures since at least 2013. The contract has since pared some of its gains, last seen up more than 6.7%.
The sharp move higher builds off gains for silver and silver-related equities late last week. Silver mining stocks Coeur Mining and Pan American Silver rose 16.9% and 14.7%, respectively, on Thursday and Friday. The iShares Silver Trust jumped 6.7% during those two sessions.

New chart shows China could overtake the U.S. as the world’s largest economy earlier than expected - The latest GDP reports show that of the U.S. fell by 2.3% in 2020, while China’s grew by 2.3% amid the coronavirus pandemic.
- The divergence means China will likely overtake the U.S. as the world’s largest economy a few years earlier than anticipated, economists said.
- However, they pointed out the two countries have different economic structures, and China’s per capita GDP is still far below that of the U.S.
BEIJING — China is set to overtake the United States as the world’s largest economy a few years earlier than anticipated due to the coronavirus pandemic, analysts said.
The U.S. reported last week that gross domestic product in 2020 contracted by 2.3% to $20.93 trillion in current-dollar terms, based on a preliminary government estimate.
In contrast, China said its GDP expanded by 2.3% last year to 101.6 trillion yuan. That’s about $14.7 trillion, based on an average exchange rate of 6.9 yuan per U.S. dollar, according to Wind Information data.

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 1 — Permatang Pauh MP Nurul Izzah Anwar had related to Tan Sri Tommy Thomas in a 2016 meeting that her family no longer trusted Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, according to a reported excerpt from the former attorney general’s new book.
The report by The Vibes detailed how Thomas had met with Nurul Izzah after he was asked to do so by Matthias Chang, a known supporter of Dr Mahathir, to discuss with the eldest daughter of Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim who was still imprisoned at the time.
“Nurul frankly said that she and her family could never trust Dr Mahathir after what he had done to her father.
“This was perfectly understandable. A predictable human reaction, considering the history of their relationship and the post-1998 episodes,” Thomas wrote.
