KUALA LUMPUR: The High Court judge who convicted former Felda chairman Isa Samad for corruption said graft is a serious crime as it has consequences to the people and the nation.
“Corruption disrupts economic growth and denies the right of the people to obtain efficient services. It is akin to cancer and weakens democracy and the rule of law,” Mohd Nazlan Mohd Ghazali, who convicted Isa in February, said in his 400-page written judgment.
Nazlan said the court had taken judicial notice that corruption was getting worse and rampant compared to the past era.
He said public interest was the overriding factor in determining the measure of punishment and the sentence must reflect the seriousness of the charges.
In this case, he said, the amount was high and the crime was planned by the accused who held high public office.

KUALA LUMPUR – While the prime minister’s job looks all but certain to go to Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob, it appears to be a free-for-all in the race to become his deputy.
Rumours have it that the post will be given to Bersatu, the party with the second-largest parliamentary representation in the bloc after Umno and headed by caretaker prime minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.
Already, a number of party leaders are said to be fighting over the post and have offered themselves as candidates, provided that Ismail Sabri is appointed prime minister.
Multiple sources confirmed that Bersatu secretary-general Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin and supreme council members Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali and Datuk Seri Mohd Redzuan Md Yusof are vying for the position.
Redzuan, however, told The Vibes that the party has yet to put forward a name.
With the battle for the No. 2 position intensifying, Bersatu deputy president Datuk Seri Ahmad Faizal Azumu appears to have emerged as an unlikely candidate.
Two party insiders confirmed that a number of Bersatu members are pushing for Faizal’s candidacy.
They believe that the deputy prime minister’s post should be given to him by virtue of his seniority in the party.

Afghanistan: Taliban carrying out door-to-door manhunt, report says |

The Taliban have stepped up their search for people who worked for Nato forces or the previous Afghan government, a UN document has warned.
It said the militants have been going door-to-door to find targets and threatening their family members.
The hardline Islamist group has tried to reassure Afghans since seizing power in a lightning offensive, promising there would be "no revenge".
But there are fears the Taliban have changed little since the brutal 1990s.
The warning the group were targeting "collaborators" came in a confidential document by the RHIPTO Norwegian Center for Global Analyses, which provides intelligence to the UN.
"There are a high number of individuals that are currently being targeted by the Taliban and the threat is crystal clear," Christian Nellemann, who heads the group behind the report, told the BBC.

3rd vaccine shot can boost immunity by up to 5 times, says expert |

KUALA LUMPUR: A third dose of the Covid-19 vaccine, given six months after the second dose, can lead to a strong, three to five-fold boost in immune response, a health expert says.
Pharmaniaga Berhad vaccine specialist Dr Ajit Pal Singh Raina said the results of a recent immune-persistence study by Sinovac showed that two doses of Sinovac’s CoronaVac vaccine induced good immunogenicity.
Although neutralising antibody levels declined after six months, a two-dose vaccination schedule generated a strong immune memory, he said in an article published on the Bernama news portal today.
“Hence, will a booster shot be necessary? The third dose of CoronaVac effectively boosts neutralising titers and provides a better immuno-protection response. This pattern is consistent with other vaccines like AstraZeneca, showing higher concentrations of total Immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibodies after a third dose.
“It is also worth mentioning that timing for a booster dose is critical and not to be given too early,” he said.

- New Zealand’s Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern extended a nationwide lockdown on Friday until midnight on Aug. 24, saying that the outbreak had widened to other cities.
- The country had been virus-free and without curbs until Ardern on Tuesday ordered a snap 3-day nationwide lockdown and seven-day shutdown in Auckland.
- Just about 19% of the country’s 5.1 million population has been fully vaccinated so far, the slowest among OECD nations.
New Zealand’s Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern extended a nationwide lockdown on Friday as the number of Covid-19 cases in the country jumped and the outbreak widened beyond its largest city, Auckland, to the capital, Wellington.
New Zealanders had been living virus-free and without curbs until Ardern on Tuesday ordered a snap 3-day nationwide lockdown and seven-day shutdown in Auckland after discovering the country’s first case since February.
Ardern extended the lockdown until midnight on Aug. 24, saying that the outbreak had widened to other cities.
“We just don’t quite know the full scale of this delta outbreak,” Ardern said at the news conference.
Health authorities said 11 new cases were recorded on Friday, of which three cases were in Wellington.
The three in Wellington had recently travelled to Auckland and had visited locations that were identified as exposed to the outbreak, the health ministry said in a statement.

KUALA LUMPUR – A petition against Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob’s widely expected appointment as the country’s ninth prime minister has been started on change.org.
It received 329,220 signatures at the time of publication, and is currently one of the top-signed entries on the platform.
Started by one Kyle Mohd two days ago, the petition alleged that Ismail Sabri’s mishandling of the Covid-19 pandemic led to Malaysia’s whopping caseload.
To date, the country has seen almost 1.5 million infections and over 13,000 fatalities.
“Entrepreneurs and workers have stopped working because of the ever-changing standard operating procedures. Parents, husbands, wives, children, relatives and friends have died because of Covid-19. Reject a failed government,” said the petition.

PETALING JAYA: An Umno Youth leader has called for the participation of all Dewan Rakyat members in the management of the health and economic crises under the new government.
Federal Territories Umno Youth information chief Wan Agyl Wan Hassan said Ismail Sabri Yaakob must rope in all MPs, including from the opposition, for the task if he becomes the next prime minister.
He said Ismail should also immediately follow the Umno president’s directive to form a functional ‘war cabinet’ focused on addressing key issues.
Speaking to FMT, Wan Agyl said Ismail did not need a big Cabinet but he must ensure its devotion to its mandates of bringing Covid-19 cases down, accomplishing economic recovery and preparing the nation for the next general election.

DUBAI – Al-Qaeda’s Yemeni branch yesterday congratulated the Taliban on their takeover of Afghanistan, and vowed to continue its own military campaigns.
“This victory and empowerment reveals to us that jihad and fighting represent the (Islamic law)-based, legal, and realistic way to restore rights (and) expel the invaders and occupiers,” al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (Aqap) said in a statement.
“As for the game of democracy and working with simple pacifism, it is a deceptive mirage, a fleeting shadow, and a vicious circle that starts with a zero and ends with it,” said the statement carried by SITE Intelligence group, which monitors jihadist networks worldwide.
The Taliban had sheltered al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden during its rule from 1996 until 2001, when United States-led forces toppled it in response to the September 11 attacks, but last week Taliban fighters took control of the capital Kabul at the climax of a lightning offensive.
The US considers Aqap the most dangerous branch of al-Qaeda’s global network, and has carried out drone strikes against its fighters in Yemen since soon after the 9/11 attacks.

Anwar-led govt would have larger majority, be more stable: PKR info chief |

KUALA LUMPUR – A government led by Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim would be a stable one, as it would command a larger majority than a bloc run by remnants of the Perikatan Nasional (PN) coalition, said PKR information chief Datuk Seri Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin.
Although Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri is widely rumoured to replace Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin as prime minister, Shamsul said the matter was not a done deal as Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) has yet to officially announce its allegiance to any leader.
During a televised interview with Bernama this evening, Shamsul said a government led by Anwar would have more than 120 MPs on its side if GPS were to join forces with the opposition.
He said this would fall in line with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s wishes to have a stable government to help the country address the Covid-19 pandemic and economic crisis.
Furthermore, Shamsul said the selection of any prime minister would have to undergo a confidence vote in Parliament.
The PN coalition has a total of 96 seats, while cooperation with GPS would add an additional 18 seats, making the total 114.
However, those supporting Pakatan Harapan and Anwar comprise 105 seats, and if GPS swings in the opposition’s favour, the majority will be 123 MPs, making an even more formidable bloc in Dewan Rakyat.
