Next govt must bring back cabotage exemption, say economists
Posted by: superadmin - 08-20-2021, 08:28 AM - Forum: Business. Economy and Investment - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: Now that Malaysia has been bypassed in yet another undersea cable project, economists are calling for the reinstatement of the cabotage exemption for foreign vessels wanting to carry out undersea repairs.

They say the new government that the King is poised to appoint would be wise to reverse the revocation of the exemption, which was done under the Muhyiddin Yassin administration’s watch.

In the latest chapter in the cabotage saga, Facebook and Google have announced that their new subsea cable, aimed at boosting regional connectivity, would bypass Malaysia entirely.

Malaysia Internet Exchange and the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation said the tech giants’ decision was proof the revocation was pushing investors away at a time when digitalisation was being touted as a key factor in Malaysia’s economic growth.

Is It Okay to Eat a Raw Garlic Clove?
Posted by: superadmin - 08-20-2021, 08:17 AM - Forum: Food Supplements - No Replies

It is safe to eat a clove of garlic as long as you are not allergic to it. However, you must be aware that it has a strong pungent smell that may give you garlicky breath. Also, having a large amount of garlic at once may give you a burning sensation inside the mouth, heartburn, gases, and loose motions.

Garlic is an herb that is grown around the world. Garlic is found as a white bulb (the shape is similar to an onion). The entire garlic is called a 'head' or 'knob.' Each small, individual segment of a garlic head is the garlic clove, which is also white. A single clove of garlic is equal to one teaspoon of chopped garlic or half a teaspoon of minced garlic. Garlic is a popular ingredient used in several dishes and beverages to add flavor.

Garlic may be added raw, as garlic powder, or in the form of garlic oil to dishes. Garlic is usually consumed cooked but can be eaten raw, which is even better because the raw form preserves all its beneficial nutrients. Most of the benefits of raw garlic come from an enzyme called allicinAllicin has anti-inflammatory, antioxidative, antibacterial, and anticancer properties. Allicin also gives garlic its characteristic odor. It is safe to eat a clove of garlic a day after a meal. To avoid the bad breath associated with eating raw garlic, the garlic may be cut into small pieces and swallowed instead of chewing. Adding too much garlic while cooking can also result in bad breath.

The health benefits of garlic

The 10 possible health benefits of garlic include:

  1. Medicinal properties: Garlic has been used throughout ancient history for its health benefits and medicinal properties. The health benefits are a result of the sulfur compounds formed when a garlic clove is chopped, crushed, or chewed. It has been used to treat several common illnesses, such as common colds.

PM9: king can be guided by wishes of his subjects – The Vibes
Posted by: superadmin - 08-19-2021, 08:21 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: 20210720-Yang_di-Pertuan_Agong_Al-Sultan...h-AFP.jpeg]

THESE next two days, eyes are once again on our monarchs as the future of the country – at least in these next two years – is put in the hands of our king.

Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah will once again be dragged into the political skirmish.

His Majesty had, time and again, through numerous statements called on our leaders to prioritise battling the Covid-19 pandemic and put the people’s welfare ahead of politics.

He also reiterated the need to abide by the principles of parliamentary democracy.

Yesterday, the king, along with his deputy Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah of Perak, met leaders from Umno, DAP, PKR, Bersatu, PAS, Amanah, Warisan and Pejuang at the palace. Their Majesties also met leaders of the parties that make up Gabungan Parti Sarawak via videoconference.

The king read them the “Riot Act” by emphasising that the appointment of a new prime minister must abide by the federal constitution; that the people cannot be further burdened by political instability in the wake of the pandemic; and, all MPs must show solidarity in battling the pandemic, which has seen frontliners stretched and exhausted.

Has the door slammed shut on Anwar again? PH to wait and see
Posted by: superadmin - 08-19-2021, 08:03 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: Pakatan Harapan (PH) has decided to wait and see if Anwar Ibrahim’s hopes of becoming prime minister have again been dashed, following speculation that Ismail Sabri Yaakob has received the support of 114 MPs to form a new government.

PH secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said the opposition coalition would only comment on the latest developments after the King makes a decision.

“We have taken the stand to only comment after an official statement is issued from the Palace, in respect of the process being carried out by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong,” he told FMT.

Meanwhile, PKR leader Abdullah Sani Abdul Hamid refused to issue any statements, saying he had been instructed by his “mentor” (Anwar) to “keep his mouth shut” for the next two days.

“If I speak wrongly, my ‘teacher’ would get angry. I will return to my cave. See you in 48 hours,” said the Kapar MP.

KUALA LUMPUR – Fully vaccinated individuals in states under Phase 1 of the National Recovery Plan will be allowed to dine in at eateries from tomorrow onwards.

In a statement today, caretaker prime minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin also announced that weekly and night markets will be allowed to operate.

These relaxations will come into force at midnight.

Muhyiddin also said outdoor sports and recreational activities that do not involve contact and teams are allowed in Phase 1 areas and within district boundaries.

On dine-in activities, Muhyiddin urged eatery operators to provide more outdoor seating areas for better ventilation.

Don’t call it ‘Act of God’, green group tells Kedah MB
Posted by: superadmin - 08-19-2021, 07:11 PM - Forum: Environment Protection News - No Replies

[Image: banjir-flood-bersin-Masjid-Jamek-Badlish...an-Yan.jpg]

GEORGE TOWN: A green group says incessant clearing of parts of Gunung Jerai caused the mud floods in Singkir, Yan, which affected 700 homes in the Kedah coastal town yesterday.

Sahabat Alam Malaysia (SAM), in a joint statement with the Consumers’ Association of Penang (CAP) , showed satellite pictures of hill clearing in two reaches of the Gunung Jerai range, which they feel were contributing factors to the mud floods.

The Kedah menteri besar, however, said the incident was due to natural causes after heavy rain on top of Gunung Jerai caused a river there to overflow, bringing mud and debris to villages at the foot of the hill.

Menteri Besar Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor refuted SAM’s assertion that Google Maps photos suggest clearing of the hills, saying the images were “over four years” old and were unreliable.

He pointed FMT to a Facebook posting by a Yan native and victim of the floods, who said the hill clearing pointed out by SAM and CAP was “completely off”.

GPS cost Malaysia its chance to have first East Malaysian PM, says Sarawak DAP chief
Posted by: superadmin - 08-19-2021, 07:06 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

KUCHING, Aug 19 — Sarawak DAP criticised Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) today for supporting Umno vice president Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob over former Sabah chief minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal to be the next prime minister of Malaysia.

Its chairman Chong Chieng Jen said this literally deprived an East Malaysian the chance to be the prime minister for the first time in the country’s history.

Mohd Shafie had the conditional support of 105 Opposition lawmakers and would have gained a simple parliamentary majority had GPS backed him.

“This is a great disservice to the people of both the Borneo states and also a setback to our common struggle for greater autonomy for the two states,” he said in a statement when commenting on the support of 18 GPS members of parliament for Ismail Sabri.

He said GPS has wronged the nation and Sarawak by supporting Ismail Sabri, whom he said has shown over the past year that he was unable to combat the Covid-19 pandemic.

“He was the person in charge of the control of the Covid-19 pandemic under the Emergency Order and yet the new infection rate and death rate increased tremendously under his charge,” Chong, who is also the Stampin member of parliament, lamented.

He also accused GPS of effectively enabling Umno to regain the prime minister’s post through its support for Ismail Sabri.

He added Umno was the main political party that had systematically eroded the rights and special position of Sarawak in the Federation of Malaysia.

“It was removed from the top post in Malaysia via the voters in the 2018 general elections.  Yet, now, with the support of GPS, Umno will take over the post of prime minister,” he said.

The 18 MPs from GPS were among 114 MPs from Umno, PAS and Perikatan Nasional to be interviewed by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong for confirmation over their support of Ismail Sabri to be the prime minister today.

Yesterday, Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Openg told reporters that he was leaving it to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong to announce GPS’ nominee to the prime minister.

Huawei vows to return to the smartphone ‘throne’ despite U.S. sanctions crippling its business

[Image: 106929556-1629269679682-gettyimages-1331...=740&h=416]
  • Huawei Chairman Guo Ping said in a Q&A with staff that the Chinese technology giant will return to the smartphone “throne.”
  • Under the Trump administration, Huawei was put on an export blacklist and cut off from key technologies, namely advanced semiconductors needed for its smartphones.
  • Revenue from Huawei’s consumer division plunged 47% year-on-year in the first half of 2021. The company was once No. 1 in the smartphone market, but has since dropped out of the top five.

GUANGZHOU, China — A Huawei executive said the Chinese technology giant will return to the “throne” of the smartphone industry even as the company continues to suffer the fallout from U.S. sanctions.

Under the administration of former U.S. President Donald Trump, Huawei was dubbed a national security threat, put on an export blacklist and cut off from key technologies, namely advanced semiconductors needed for its smartphones.

Revenue from Huawei’s consumer division plunged 47% year-on-year in the first half of 2021. The company was once No. 1 in the smartphone market, but has since dropped out of the top five.

“The biggest difficulty for us at present is on mobile phones. We know that [to produce] phones with small size and low power consumption requires advanced technology. Huawei can do the design, but no one is able to help us to produce. We are stuck,” Huawei Chairman Guo Ping said in a Q&A with staff, according to a transcript seen by CNBC.

One of Huawei’s biggest issues is that Chinese chipmakers do not have the ability to make the cutting-edge semiconductors that the Shenzhen-headquartered company requires.

In strong hint Ismail Sabri has won PM’s post, supporters called to palace tomorrow
Posted by: superadmin - 08-19-2021, 09:10 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: 04082021-KUL-Istana_Negara-ALIF_OMAR.jpg]

KUALA LUMPUR – MPs deemed to have supported Umno’s Bera MP Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob for the post of prime minister have been granted an audience with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong at various times tomorrow.

Umno secretary-general Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan, who confirmed the matter, said MPs from Umno, Barisan Nasional, Bersatu, GPS and PAS have been summoned to Istana Negara between 10am to 4pm tomorrow.

The Pontian MP also confirmed the veracity of a message making the rounds on WhatsApp, indicating that the coalition will head to the palace by bus beginning 10am.

“Only the team that has won has been invited to confirm its support again at Istana Negara,” the message read.

“This means that DS (Datuk Seri) Ismail Sabri (Yaakob), with the grace of Allah, is the PM candidate who has won.”

Ahmad told the Vibes that MPs from GPS would head to the palace at 10am, followed by Bersatu parliamentarians at 11am.
