A betrayal of King and country

From Rahim Zainuddin

Unsuspecting, ever-hopeful Malaysians would have woken up to a shock this morning.

Last night, Umno’s Ismail Sabri Yaakob was nominated by Barisan Nasional as the next prime minister. Rumour has it that he will now emerge with Bersatu’s Hamzah Zainudin as his deputy. More shockingly, the rumour mill is abound with gossip that outgoing prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin may re-emerge as minister mentor.

This will allow Umno, Bersatu and PAS, through a game of musical chairs, to re-emerge as the country’s new administration.

What a betrayal that would be.

First, a betrayal of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, who only yesterday called on all political parties to discard “old politics” and form a unity government to safeguard the health and welfare of the rakyat and to re-energise the economy.

I wonder what His Majesty will have to say, and I look forward to the next press release from Istana Negara.

PAS congratulates Taliban on victory in Afghanistan
Posted by: superadmin - 08-18-2021, 03:31 PM - Forum: Politics - Replies (2)

PETALING JAYA: A PAS leader has congratulated the newly-established Taliban-led government of Afghanistan for “successfully achieving victory” for their country.

The PAS international affairs and external relations committee chairman Muhammad Khalil Abdul Hadi said the Taliban had successfully freed their homeland from “the clutches of colonialism”.

“The victory and ‘independence’ achieved this time is the result of the efforts of all Afghans in an effort to liberate their homeland which for 20 years has been colonised and invaded without mercy and humanity that almost destroyed Afghanistan,” he said in a Twitter post.

Khalil, who is also Batu Buruk assemblyman and son of party president Abdul Hadi Awang said with the victory, he hoped that all stakeholders would work together and reach an agreement to put Afghanistan back on track.

“May the new government of Afghanistan and its people work together to develop the country and achieve prosperity, peace and progress after this based on the sharia and comprehensive Islamic values,” he added.

Anwar is our sole candidate, says Shafie
Posted by: superadmin - 08-18-2021, 03:28 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: Warisan president Shafie Apdal has backed out of the running to be the next prime minister, after stating yesterday that his party and Pakatan Harapan had agreed to nominate either him or opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim for the vacant post.

“Anwar is our candidate, the only candidate from the opposition. My party will give full support to Anwar as prime minister,” Shafie told The Borneo Post today.

According to the Sarawak daily, the former Sabah chief minister was unable to secure support from members of the ruling coalition in Sarawak, Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS), to make up the numbers he had initially hoped for.

The opposition is said to have a solid 105 seats and need seven more to have the majority in the Dewan Rakyat.

Ismail Sabri as PM a certainty… or is it?
Posted by: superadmin - 08-18-2021, 02:17 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: 22062021_-_KUL_-_Ismail_Sabri_Yaakob_-31.jpg]

KUALA LUMPUR – Is it with certainty that one can put their money on Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob as the country’s ninth prime minister?

Several Umno and Barisan Nasional lawmakers last night said a consensus has been reached to name the Bera MP for the top job.

However, how can it be a consensus when at least three Umno MPs – Tan Sri Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah, Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor and Datuk Seri Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz – have pulled support for the former deputy prime minister?

Former Federal Territories minister Tan Sri Annuar Musa in a Facebook post said other allied parties – supposedly those from the Perikatan Nasional government – have vowed to back any candidate from Barisan Nasional.

In all, the Ketereh lawmaker said more than 69 MPs will pledge their support. Add this to BN’s 42 lawmakers, and it is enough to achieve the magic number of 111 for a new government to be formed.

Based on calculations according to the original PN alignment, this means Ismail Sabri will have the backing of 115 MPs, including those from PAS and Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS), and independents.

Azmin as Ismail Sabri’s deputy? Mere rumours meant to thwart Umno veep’s PM candidacy
Posted by: superadmin - 08-18-2021, 01:52 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: 18082021-_ismail_sabri_-azmin_-_vibes.jpg]

KUALA LUMPUR – Speculations that Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali will deputise Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob in a new-look cabinet are being created to scuttle the Umno vice-president’s chances of becoming the prime minister.

Responding to a viral poster congratulating Ismail and Azmin for their appointments as the country’s number one and two respectively, a source in the former’s camp said no such agreement has been reached.

Another Umno insider told The Vibes it would be shocking if Azmin, who is Bersatu supreme council member, is indeed chosen as the deputy prime minister.

This, according to him, is considering the former international trade and industry minister is seen as a polarising figure who has lost a lot of political support.

“This is especially following his active role in the Sheraton Move last year and considering his sub-par performance as a minister.

“Azmin is not a candidate that Umno will support.”

Special Rulers’ meeting on Friday to discuss new govt
Posted by: superadmin - 08-18-2021, 01:47 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: Malay-Rulers-Agong-Istana-Negara-Bernama.jpg]

KUALA LUMPUR: The Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah, will convene a special meeting with the Malay Rulers on Friday to discuss the formation of a new government and the appointment of a new prime minister.

Comptroller of the Royal Household Ahmad Fadil Shamsuddin confirmed the matter with Berita Harian.

He said Istana Negara would come out with a statement today.

Yesterday, party chiefs from PKR, DAP, Amanah, Umno, PAS and Pejuang had a two-hour audience with the King and his deputy, the Sultan of Perak.

The audience came after Muhyiddin Yassin resigned as the prime minister on Monday.

New PM must prove support in Dewan Rakyat, says King
Posted by: superadmin - 08-18-2021, 01:45 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: The country’s next prime minister must prove his majority in Parliament, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong has decreed.

In a statement, Istana Negara said the King relayed this to political party leaders during an audience yesterday.

“His Majesty decreed that the prime minister he appoints according to the Constitution has to table a motion of confidence in the Dewan Rakyat.”

The King also said all parties must work together without a winner-take-all situation.

Brace for another leader with slim majority, says ex-minister
Posted by: superadmin - 08-18-2021, 01:42 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: As MPs prepare to finalise the statutory declarations (SDs) on their choice for a new prime minister, a former minister says another premier with a slim majority may be possible.

Salleh Said Keruak said this is due to voting for the new prime minister “through political parties en bloc”.

“It seems we are going through another process of voting for a new PM based on party choices,” he said in a Facebook post this morning.

“Again, this means it becomes a battle of numbers with probably another slim majority.”

Ismail Sabri as PM is ‘old wine in new bottle’, says analyst
Posted by: superadmin - 08-18-2021, 01:35 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: The potential appointment of Umno vice-president Ismail Sabri Yaakob as prime minister is akin to having “old wine in a new bottle”, says an analyst.

The former deputy prime minister, who was the Perikatan Nasional-led government’s main non-health spokesman on Covid-19 matters, has now won the backing of Barisan Nasional, Bersatu, PAS and GPS as their prime ministerial candidate, after Muhyiddin Yassin’s resignation on Monday.

“This is like old wine in a new bottle, or as the Chinese like to say, ‘You change the soup but you don’t change the ingredients. You just cook a different type of soup or with a different flavour’,” Singapore Institute of International Affairs senior fellow Oh Ei Sun told FMT.

Oh predicted that instead of a wholesale change in government, the country could expect to see a “Cabinet reshuffle” with nearly the same faces in the new administration, albeit holding different ministerial positions.

Afghan women to have rights within Islamic law, Taliban say
Posted by: superadmin - 08-18-2021, 10:01 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: _119972634_c3eab337-de29-4030-8db1-ad31291d8f92.jpg]

The rights of women in Afghanistan will be respected "within the framework of Islamic law", the Taliban say.

In the group's first news conference since taking control of the country on Sunday, a spokesman said women would be free to work but gave little detail about other rules and restrictions.

Zabihullah Mujahid repeated that all Afghans must live "within the framework of Islam".

Rights groups fear women's freedoms could be eroded under the Taliban.

The militant group introduced or supported punishments in line with their strict interpretation of Islam's legal system, Sharia law, when they controlled Afghanistan between 1996 and 2001.

Women had to wear the all-covering burka, and the Taliban also disapproved of girls aged 10 and over going to school.

In the news briefing on Tuesday, Mr Mujahid fielded several questions from the international media about what women's rights could look like under a Taliban government.

"We are going to allow women to work and study within our frameworks," he said. "Women are going to be very active within our society."

But he did not expand when asked about dress codes and what roles women would be able to have within the country's workforce.
