Houses at half-price, anyone? |

PETALING JAYA: Everyone loves a sale, particularly if the property is going at half price.
But not earlier buyers, or investors who had bought to flip. These two groups would be unhappy. Maybe even furious.
Headlines about property have been like this, of late: Is it time to buy? Is it ‘still’ a safe investment? Is there light at the end of the tunnel?
There is a missing question: “Will prices fall further?”
Much depends on the location, type of property and developers’ track record, said Johor-based KGV International Property Consultants.
It also depends if one is buying into an overhang project – completed units which remain unsold after they have been certified fit for occupation.

Rethinking Malaysia |

After the bad behaviour of West Malaysian politicians, East Malaysians should do a lot of soul-searching to see whether they get any real benefit from their states’ partnership in the Malaysian federation.
Are East Malaysians just pawns in a game of federal power play or feeble discards that are only called upon to make up the numbers to secure a seat for the next prime minister?
East Malaysians have been fooled by the promises of successive federal governments to honour the Malaysia Agreement 1963 and to treat Sabah and Sarawak as partners equal to Peninsular Malaysia. All Sabah and Sarawak got from Muhyiddin Yassin was the name “wilayah”, whatever that means.

Malaysia on the clock as it misses out on another undersea cable |

PETALING JAYA: With Malaysia missing out on yet another undersea cable, stakeholders are saying time is running out to reinstate the cabotage exemption lest the country miss out on more digital infrastructure projects.
In the latest chapter in the cabotage saga, it was announced that Apricot, Facebook and Google’s new subsea cable, aimed at boosting regional connectivity, would bypass Malaysia entirely.
Facebook said in a statement that the cable system, expected to launch in 2024, would provide an initial design capacity of more than 190 tbps to meet rising data demand in the region and support the upcoming Echo and Bifrost cables, which also will not connect to Malaysia.
Speaking to FMT, Malaysia Internet Exchange chairman Chiew Kok Hin said a pair of factors had caused Malaysia to fall victim in this case.

PM selection process must be transparent, fair and above board – P. Gunasegaram |

THE selection of the prime ministerial candidate is an important process and needs to be transparent, fair and above board to clearly show which MP voted for which candidate.
This is because the king will rely almost entirely on the breakdown of support from aggregating this information to pick who will be prime minister.
There are several problems with the method proposed in the letter by the Dewan Rakyat Speaker Datuk Azhar Azizan Harun to MPs asking them to choose the one MP they support for the post of prime minister.
One, it gives hardly any time for the MPs to form alignments that will need to be discussed within the party and between parties to choose a candidate. This is especially important now as no coalition has a majority.
Support for caretaker prime minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin is said to be 100 MPs, while Harapan plus allies are said to have 105. It’s not clear whether Muhyiddin will even offer himself as a candidate again. He should not because as prime minister, he had already lost his majority. Thus, time is needed for his party to sort things out.
Similarly, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has solid Pakatan Harapan support, but he still needs other parties to give him a majority. More time is needed to form the alliances that this will make possible.
After waiting so long to get Muhyiddin’s resignation, the decision for a new prime ministerial candidate is rather hasty, given the complexities right now. It is appropriate that more time is given, perhaps a week.

Let professionals lead new govt, says medical coalition |

PETALING JAYA: A coalition of medical groups has called for the new government to be led by professionals instead of career politicians.
The Malaysian Health Coalition (MHC), which is made up of 49 medical groups and 21 individual doctors, said this would go a long way towards ensuring the country’s recovery from the devastating impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.
“The new government must balance health with the recovery of the economy, democracy and society.
“The public and the country’s health system are increasingly exhausted. Politicians must be part of the solution, not part of the problem,” the coalition said.

Anwar leads race to be Opposition’s pick for PM, but die likely already cast in Ismail Sabri’s favour
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 18 — Pakatan Harapan (PH) and other Opposition parties would fully back PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to be the next prime minister if he could get rival lawmakers to support his bid, sources said.
The sources and insiders privy to the negotiations confirmed to Malay Mail that Anwar currently has 105 federal lawmakers on his side, not enough for a simple majority.
A simple majority would usually be 111 in the 220-seat Parliament but was now 110 due to two vacancies that could not be filled due to the pandemic. Securing 111 MPs would, however, put the matter beyond doubt.
Warisan Youth’s chief and Sepanggar MP Datuk Azis Jamman revealed yesterday that his party’s support for Anwar was conditional on the latter being able to secure the additional lawmakers needed.

Penang father and son look to the stars for inspiration |

WHILE most people fall asleep, some earlier than usual after another weary day of living under the various movement control orders, a father encourages his son here in Penang to peer into the night skies with the hope of seeing shooting stars and how the moon looks from afar.
Budding astronomy enthusiast Annamalai Muthu has designed a special telescopic device – using an iPad to power an ultraviolet/infrared space observation telescope – to aid him and his son Arrav.
His dedication to the world of space exploration has rubbed off on the eight-year-old, who is equally, if not more eager to explore the final frontier known to civilisation.
Collecting moon rocks
After almost two-years of scanning the galaxies, in they have amassed a collection of insightful images through their telescopic device, Annamalai and Arrav are now in the midst of trying to collect precious moon rocks and meteorites which have fallen into Earth's astrosphere during meteor showers.

A Better Malaysia Assembly, not just a new PM, please – Nazir Razak |

IN the next few days, Malaysia will see the swearing in of its ninth prime minister, and a few days or maybe weeks later, a whole new cabinet of ministers will be sworn in, too. They will have a good honeymoon because, during this period, the pandemic will subside; it has to given our world-beating rate of vaccinations and the number of people already infected. Then, the new government will start facing up to business as usual of governing Malaysia. Will they prove materially different to past governments? Or will they be substantially just as frustrating for the rakyat? If so, Malaysians will turn to GE15 and hope that it will bring us the good government we desperately need. But what are the chances of that, given the electoral system is substantially the same (even with the possible addition of the 18 to 20 year olds)? What are the chances that we end up roughly back where we are today?
We are in a system where no one party or coalition has a comfortable majority to govern properly. Where deals are being cut, not by trading policies but durians (apparently the codeword for cash) and positions. Where the PM is so powerful, he (so far only he) can use the enforcement powers to his advantage. Where good people go into politics and turn bad in order to stay in the game. Where reforms are racially labelled so as to stop them in their tracks. Where we don’t have an economy but only a “political economy”; every business seems to rely on the government for licences, permits, contracts, regulations or ownership rules or for government companies to give way. Where our best talents want to work overseas, yet we all know that, in the Industrial Revolution 4.0, it is entrepreneurship and innovation that drives success. Where our social safety net has been found so wanting by the pandemic.

KUALA LUMPUR – Opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is the top choice for prime minister, according to a recent Twitter poll.
The PKR president secured 69.6% of the votes from nearly 40,000 total responses, a resounding lead against other candidates in the poll carried out by The Vibes on Twitter.
The other politicians in the poll were Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob, Tengku Razaleigh Tengku Hamzah and Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein, who are all from Umno.
The poll, which asked netizens who their top choice for prime minister would be should Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin resign, ran for 24 hours starting last Sunday.
In that time, 37,407 Twitter users cast their votes.
