DAP man slams ‘incompetent’ Perak health exco as cases surge in state
Posted by: superadmin - 08-17-2021, 07:36 PM - Forum: Covid-19 Pandemic - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: Perak health exco Mohd Akmal Kamarudin’s competence was called into question today by a DAP representative following the surge in the number of Covid-19 cases reported daily in the state.

In a Twitter thread, Pasir Pinji assemblyman Howard Lee said that with cases failing to subside, it is alarming that more has not been done to curb infections in the state.

“For the past month, intensive care units (ICU) in Perak hospitals have been operating beyond maximum capacity.

“According to data available in the public domain, as of Aug 12, ICU beds occupancy was at 120%. This was the worst in the country at that particular point in time,” he said.

He also cited the poor state of the Covid-19 assessment centre (CAC) at the Perak Sports Complex in Ipoh and the state’s “tepid” vaccination rate as other examples showing Akmal’s lack of competence.

Could a grand coalition or unity govt emerge?
Posted by: superadmin - 08-17-2021, 06:34 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: The King’s message to political leaders to move on from old politics and be more united for the good of the country could lead to one of two long-mooted ideas – a grand coalition or a unity government.

After an audience with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong this afternoon, opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim told the press that party leaders had agreed that they needed to “stop old conflicts” and unite for the sake of the country.

“More importantly, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and the Deputy Agong stressed, we have to create a new form of politics that is more peaceful and harmonious,” he said.

Council of Professors fellow Jeniri Amir however told FMT that if politicians abide by the call for harmony, it could form the basis of a strong and stable government.

“If we can get national consensus and form a grand coalition, like what came after the May 13, 1969 racial riots, then we will have the political stability to face the health and economic crises.

Umno MPs meet tonight as SD submission deadline looms, group of ‘G10’ holdouts emerge
Posted by: superadmin - 08-17-2021, 06:29 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 17 — Umno federal lawmakers will meet at their party headquarters tonight, believed to be for discussions on their candidate to be the next prime minister that must be submitted tomorrow.

The meeting scheduled for 8pm is expected to include all 38 of the party’s parliamentarians.

Malay Mail was informed that Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob was racing against time to secure the support of all his party’s lawmakers to be their nominee for the post.

However, an internal source said that 10 of the 15 MPs who rejected Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin have so far refused to back Ismail Sabri, Muhyiddin’s deputy prior to the former’s resignation yesterday.

‘Intelligence failure of the highest order’ — How Afghanistan fell to the Taliban

‘Intelligence failure of the highest order’ — How Afghanistan fell to the Taliban so quickly

[Image: 106928071-1629119991141-gettyimages-1234...=740&h=416]

  • After nearly two decades of war, more than 6,000 American lives lost, over 100,000 Afghans killed and more than $2 trillion spent by the U.S., the speed of the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan has shocked the world.
  • U.S. defense officials reportedly expected Afghanistan’s capital, Kabul, to fall in 90 days. It took less than 10 days.
  • Among the key causes, analysts say, are intelligence failures, a more powerful Taliban, corruption, money, cultural differences and willpower.

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — The world was shocked this week by horrifying scenes of desperate Afghans swarming the tarmac at Kabul’s international airport, grasping at their last chance to escape a country now completely overrun by the Taliban.

After nearly two decades of war, more than 6,000 American lives lost, over 100,000 Afghans killed and more than $2 trillion spent by the U.S., the outlook for the country’s future was still grim, with regional experts assuming the Taliban would ultimately come to control most of Afghanistan once again.

But few expected a takeover this swift, with so little resistance from the Afghan government and Afghan National Army, the latter of which was funded and trained with $89 billion from the U.S. taxpayer.

“While the end result and bloodletting once we left was never in doubt, the speed of collapse is unreal,” one former intelligence official and U.S. Marine who served in Afghanistan told CNBC, requesting anonymity due to professional restrictions.

Out with the old politics – King calls for unity and cooperation
Posted by: superadmin - 08-17-2021, 04:44 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: Anwar-Ibrahim-Mat-Sabu-n-Lim-Guan-Eng-170821.jpg]

KUALA LUMPUR: Political parties in the country have agreed to leave behind the “politics of old” after the Yang di-Pertuan Agong called for its leaders to work together to address the Covid-19 and economic crises, opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim has revealed.

He said this when speaking to reporters following a two-hour audience with the King and his deputy, the Sultan of Perak, along with party chiefs from DAP, Amanah, Umno, PAS and Pejuang.

According to Anwar, the King had told them that the country was in a constitutional and political crisis and that the leaders must therefore unite to manage Covid-19.

He added that they seemed to have reached a consensus to focus on the country’s development.

“The issue (discussed) was not on the appointment of a new prime minister. The Agong and the deputy Agong also backed a new form of politics (suatu bentuk politik yang baru) that is more harmonious for the rakyat.”

Dark horse Shafie stays low-key amid scramble for majority
Posted by: superadmin - 08-17-2021, 01:49 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: 02082021_-_PARLIAMENT_OPPOSITION_-shafie...AF_-_4.jpg]

KOTA KINABALU – As opposition parties try to secure majority support in Parliament amid the political tussle for power, Warisan president Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal is holding his cards close to his heart.

The former Sabah chief minister, who has emerged as the dark horse in the race to be prime minister, might hold sway in the kingmaking process.

Former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad had last year floated the idea for Shafie to be prime minister as an alternative choice to PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

According to insiders, there had been some gentlemanly agreement between Shafie and the Pakatan Harapan (PH) coalition. While Warisan is not under the PH banner, it has presented itself as an ally in most cases.

This so-called agreement will pave the way for whoever is capable of bringing sufficient numbers of MPs into the fold.

It is learnt that currently PH is stuck at 105 MPs – PH with 88 (DAP’s 42, PKR’s 35 and Amanah’s 11).

Now is the time to put reform agenda on the table, says Bersih
Posted by: superadmin - 08-17-2021, 01:44 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: THOMAS-FANN-BERSIH-CHAIRPERSON-FMT-140319_4.jpg]

PETALING JAYA: Electoral reform group Bersih 2.0 has launched a report outlining 10 reforms for parliamentary select committees, saying this will help them serve as a more effective check and balance to the executive.

Apart from incorporating best practices from the UK, Australia and New Zealand, Bersih chairman Thomas Fann said the report took into account proposals by MPs from all parties.

He said Bersih is hoping to hold discussions with the Dewan Rakyat speaker and deputy speakers to forward the proposals for their consideration.

Noting that the country is in “what some would say is a terrible situation” as no party or group has a simple majority, Fann said this presents a unique opportunity to push for reforms when parties negotiate with each other.
