KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 17 — Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin is said to have 35 signed statutory declarations (SD) from MPs ahead of an audience with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong to determine who will be the next prime minister.
The Star reported an unnamed source with inside knowledge of Bersatu affairs as saying the SDs are from the party’s 31 MPs and four independents who are aligned to it.
Among the four independent lawmakers were Julau MP Larry Sng and Kuala Langat MP Datuk Dr Xavier Jayakumar. Both were formerly with PKR but left and pledged support for Perikatan Nasional (PN) when it was the government.
According to the source, Bersatu made a bloc decision last night, pledging to support the candidate chosen by Muhyiddin and the party leadership.

Learn from Penang’s 1971 political tumult: Pemenang chief |

GEORGE TOWN – Some political observers are seeing similarities between the federal-level political tussle and that which hit Penang in 1971 when the then chief minister lost his majority.
Six assemblymen had exited Gerakan and withdrawn support for then chief minister Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu.
This left the state assembly with Lim’s 12 Gerakan reps, six in the opposition led by the late Tan Sri Tan Kee Choon, and another 12 aligned with the Alliance, comprising Umno, MCA and MIC.
“Lim knew that it was virtually impossible to govern an impoverished Penang with no support from the federal government, so he made overtures to the then prime minister Tun Abdul Razak Hussein, who agreed for the sake of stability to work with Gerakan. Gerakan was an opposition party at the federal level,” Penang Malay Association (Pemenang) president Tan Sri Mohd Yussof Latiff told The Vibes.

A temporary political ray of hope? |

From Abdul Hamid Abdul Kadir
The ultimate, proper and long-awaited decision to resign as prime minister by Muhyiddin Yassin yesterday has given the rakyat a ray of hope in these troubled times. The automatic resignation of the bloated cabinet is another welcome news.
The appointment of Muhyiddin as caretaker prime minister by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong is a just and fair decision, until the King appoints a new prime minister and cabinet and the Parliament is reconvened.
The caretaker provisions are well defined and recognised, and a caretaker cabinet is expected to have about 10 ministers responsible for essential running of the country. In the present situation with a raging pandemic, these functions would primarily concern controlling the disease, vaccination to achieve herd immunity, protection of the rakyat, and economic revival as far as possible under the circumstances.

Stuart Ramalingam to be appointed as MFL CEO? |

KUALA LUMPUR - The Malaysian Football League (MFL) is expected to announce Stuart Ramalingam as its new chief executive officer (CEO) in the coming weeks, replacing Datuk Ab Ghani Hassan who has moved up as the president of the football body.
It was understood from sources in the football fraternity that the MFL Board members have collectively agreed that Stuart is the right candidate for the job.
Stuart is expected to relinquish his position as the FA of Malaysia (FAM) general-secretary before accepting his new post.
“Apparently, it has been decided by the Board members in a meeting recently. However, I believe the announcement will be made after the FA of Malaysia (FAM) appoints Stuart’s successor for the general-secretary position.

From hero to zero: Muhyiddin’s spectacular fall from grace |

KUALA LUMPUR – Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin’s downfall is the perfect example of how much things can change in politics within years.
Bereft of support, he yesterday announced he will relinquish the top post in Putrajaya, just six years after he was heralded as a national hero for speaking out against then prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak at the height of the 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) scandal.
Then holding the position of the country’s number two, Muhyiddin was the first in Najib’s cabinet to sing a different tune to his boss with regard to the mega financial scandal, when others around him continued to ardently back Najib.
A 70-minute scathing speech during an Umno division meeting on July 26, 2015 took the nation – and to an extent the government – by surprise, as the maverick Muhyiddin pressed Najib to quit as 1MDB adviser and alleged that Barisan Nasional (BN) would lose if a general election was called then.
Muhyiddin was removed as deputy prime minister just two days later, and sacked from Umno in June the following year, as he began his years-long quest for political reform.

Still no one with majority, Muhyiddin says in jab at MP claiming ‘formidable’ numbers |

KUALA LUMPUR – Although Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin has resigned as prime minister, his political career is not yet dead in the water as there is still no single candidate with majority support.
The Bersatu president said he ended up being caretaker prime minister as no party has the majority, and even alluded to his political rival without naming names.
“Previously, an MP claimed that he has ‘convincing and formidable’ (numbers), but now, we haven’t heard anything about it.
“We are politicians, we have information. Not one side has a bigger majority than me. But whatever it is, the process and appointment (of the prime minister) now lies with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong,” he told selected news editors after his televised address from Putrajaya yesterday.
Muhyiddin said if he offers to retake the prime minister’s job now with the same support, the political tussle will continue.
“Even if I were to offer myself, the numbers are still the same. The country will continue to be in limbo. The tussle will keep repeating itself.

Was Muhyiddin terrified of the press? |

Muhyiddin Yassin’s relationship with the broader Malaysian and foreign press corps was mute and moot.
His press advisers kept most journalists at arm’s length and relied on embedded “Muhyiddin megaphones” in the local media during his rare press conferences.
The advisers seemingly dictated terms to the government-controlled media while facing a relentless pressure to keep the free media under control.
Friendly media came across as Muhyiddin cheerleaders, not keen to put the former prime minister under scrutiny.
So, you wonder why Muhyiddin objected to his final press conference yesterday at Putrajaya being broadcast live with only friendly editors from local media present.

Unity govt can work only with clear terms, say analysts |

PETALING JAYA: A unity government will only work if all the kinks are worked out beforehand, and transparent policies outlined without any discrimination, says a political analyst.
For a unity government to work, the new prime minister must have support across the board, said academician Azmi Hassan.
All major political parties must be assured of their rights in the government. “Only then can a unity government be successful,” he told FMT.
The idea of a unity government was first floated in February 2020 when it was proposed by Dr Mahathir Mohamad after the collapse of the Pakatan Harapan government that he had led.
He invited rival political parties to link up as no political leader then had majority backing in the Dewan Rakyat. However, his proposal was rebuffed.
